No way our defence is elite so we’ll be out there Saturday.
Excellent news, after all, it’s the football that really matters.

Fortunately LCFC are classed as "elite" so are unable to play. We have therefore been awarded a 3-0 walkover.

Clubs to pay back £762m if season gets voided according to The Athletic. No wonder none of them voted for it!

Deeney has vloged his feelings on it. Also stated he has a gym in his house and can get fit and ready again within two weeks.

Said he misses shaking hands with fans. Check out the BBC Football website, it's in the What Next for Football article.

It’s only football so why does it matter?

Well I’d say there’s an aspect to it that means a lot actually. The world feels a surreal and scary place right now, like we’ve been thrust into an end of the world apocalyptic movie.

Will there be enough food? Am I allowed to see my family? Will my friends get through the financial side of this?

It’s just the beginning and already I’m longing for normality. And let me make this clear, I’m one of the lucky ones (in most aspects). I’m fearful for my friends and family and, well, everyone to be honest.

Football being played would give us that outlet, give us that sense of normality. If its ok for a football match to be played then it can’t be that bad out there, the world is obviously going to get through it. You can switch off from the worst case scenario thoughts that fly through your minds and have the obviously ridiculous worry of will we beat Norwich? Will we avoid relegation?

There’s another side to how footballers should be helping, financially. It’s still niggling at me Rooneys comment about being used as guinea pigs - they sent footballers off to their luxury pads 2 weeks ago. They don’t have to see anyone and can use their private gyms and swimming pools to entertain themselves whilst teachers continued to face hundreds of staff and children on a daily basis, even now still having to keep schools open to the most needy as the virus spreads.

Time to do your bit for society. Donate at least 50% of your wages to the government or a charity helping people out in this crises. Then be prepared to get out there and give us the normality of life, the shot of happiness we will need with what should be irrelevant but actually isn’t.

I’m not saying they should be placed in more risk than others, but when it’s reasonably safe to work, like most of us will do, let’s get this show back on.

I get that footballers earn ridiculous amounts, I really do. But when making these statements that they should give away ‘at least 50%’ of their income, folks need to remember that most people, rich or not, live to their means.

Yes, they can all absolutely downsize their desire for the biggest and best things but I expect they all have huge houses with large mortgages etc - giving away vast amounts of money might not be so easy to do. They could sell their cars to raise money to give away - but who would buy them in this climate?

I think the question of vast wealth and greed is one to be had. But perhaps in some cases, like footballers, it’s not for now.

I’d be looking at people like Branson and Bezos to be giving away some of their money well before others.

Again this comes back to the odd view that people have that all footballers do is train for football and play football.

It's pretty bloody weird. Like those people who abuse actors in the street because their TV show character is a bad guy.

It’s not that, it’s how detached they are, and I’m not usually one to think this way.

They are human , same muscles, skeleton, blood etc. They have loved ones they care and worry about and emotions like us all.

But they are without doubt within the top 5% I’d say in terms of how good they have it at this moment in time. Don’t need to work, getting paid (huge sums), fit and healthy so less serious risk, big houses with extra entertainment most of us don’t have.

And that’s fine until you come out and cry you’re a guinea pig - without having the decency to add to that comment “and I accept we have it easier and better than most and I’ll do whatever I can to support the nurses out there and those who rely on football as their income who’ll be losing their jobs”

I’m not anti-footballers at all, when the money is there I’d rather they got it than executives and multi-millionaire owners. But they need to play their part surely.

That's not what Rooney was saying though. He was saying that footballers in this country were being expected to play despite getting infected, coaches getting infected and other countries shutting sport down. It had nothing to do with sitting at home.

As I said on the other thread about this, why should footballers put themselves at undue risk for our entertainment? They shouldn't.

You could say that elite footballers pay a vast amount of tax already so they are 'doing their bit' like the rest of us. But I haven't seen one player moaning about their 'sitting at home' predicament so don't feel the need to tell them what to do.

Maybe when they put together a group of footballers each singing a line to Chumbawumba, I might turn my sights towards them.

That is exactly what Rooney was saying. He was crying about having to "work" and was showing disgust at the authorities for poor old him. Despite 90% of the population still being at work and not being able to fall back on obscene multi million pound homes and financial security that he can. The risk in continuing with the football is predominantly supporters but the **** missed that as well.

He looked like a C**t for saying it and how anyone can support his views is bizarre.

  18. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

I think the thing from your earlier post - and I understand it was said more from frustration perhaps - was that it was written as if what Rooney said goes for all footballers.

Personally I didn’t understand the criticism that came his way. He didn’t release a ‘statement’ and the comments came as part of a wider-ranging interview with The Times. Nobody has really known how to act in this situation but I understand Rooney’s frustration - the PL announced their intention to play on and rowed back on that 5 minutes later after the Arteta diagnosis...it smacked of the authorities not contacting their member clubs beforehand or understanding the gravity of what was going on.

Rooney has kids. A wife. And is old enough to know that there is more to life than football. I expect at that time, they were his concern and his comments were directed in such a way. His comments clearly weren’t directed as sticking two-fingers up at the general public who are working their way through this.

  19. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

He’s a guy who has a wife and kids. And didn’t want to play in a situation that he could foresee as being fundamentally wrong. And he judged the actions of the authorities at that time as not being mindful of that. There’s nothing bizarre about that.

People just seem to be sore because he didn’t mention people working at Tesco at the same time.

Didn't Branson ask the government for a bailout of some sort? Seems like an absolute tosser. Bezos reminds me of Dr Evil, the guy could do an extraordinary amount of good if he had any concept of empathy.

He directly said he felt like a guinea pig and he shouldnt have to worry. In what way does he think other groups like supermarket staff, nhs staff and waiters and people who work in cities via public transport feel? Hes entitled, privileged and self centric. He does not have to mention people who work at tesco to fail to understand how dumb his comments are..

  24. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

You say he should think about how supermarket staff feel etc and then say that he doesn’t need to mention them. So how do you propose he goes about this?

Seems to me you think his comments are ‘dumb’ because of the things he didn’t say, rather than the things he did say? But then you’ve said he doesn’t need to say them?

Your misinterpreting me. Not intentionally, im sure. Imagine a group of hikers going to the top of a mountain. One of them has all the kit, everything you can think of to assist him getting to the top. The others have varying degrees of climbing stuff, some have just enough to get them to the top. Some are wearing worn out old boots and not fully water resistant clothing at best. When they get to the top they had been told there was a nutritious lunch before they go back. However the lunch isnt there. The guy with everything complains saying his and only his hardship is unfair, he rants about it actually. The others get on with it because they dont have a media platform to complain or maybe they just get the **** on with it.

Why the indecent haste? We might all be confined to our homes, bored to tears, but our "deaths curve" is north of Italy's at the moment - are we going to have such an appetite for football if CoVid19 is claiming thousands of lives every week?

Only reason the clubs want to finish the season is the fear of losing TV revenue. All about the cash.
Lots of clubs including ours could be in big financial trouble, once this is over over clubs should have a rethink re wages and transfers but sadly I doubt things will change.

But also says at the bottom they wouldn't want this season to compromise future seasons. I remain of the view this season will be void, especially if 1000s die and there is a big recession. Owner still hasn't grasped the gravity of the situation, talks about paying money to players for short term contracts. What money?

Southampton are one of the richest clubs in PL. Whilst 2019 accounts are not out yet it made £75m profit in the previous 2 years and had £125m of capital with no debt and £50m in cash. Its owner G Jisheng is said to be worth £3bn having paid £200m in 2017 for 80% ownership. They will have no problems paying players even if PL money drys up in the short term

A very different situation to our club

Exactly. People are going to want to feel hopeful. But some are overlooking the massive state of mourning the country will be in due to thousands and thousands of deaths. The CMO’s words were ‘20,000 would be a good result’ whilst excusing his own frankness. We currently have 233 fatalities - people just need to think of the hit to the country and world between 233 and that so called ‘best outcome’ And realise kicking a football around days after should be meaningless.

I want ours and all other clubs to survive. But football is so so irrelevant right now. I think some figures within the game really need to think about their comments regarding getting the games back on - it’s not as if they don’t have time to choose their words carefully.
