Our booing has plainly sharpened them up.

Just Ashley left at the World Cup, I thought he played quite well tonight and would've liked to see him net one of the penalties.

Though I'm wondering is wing back his best position? I know it's been one of his positions for a while, but couldn't he play as one of the two wide men behind Kane, meaning we could still play three at the back?

Has anybody associated with Watford ever won a world cup?

    Pickford.

In memory of BRLR not often of this parish recently.

Congrats on a big win tonight lads. Miles better all over the park tonight and a deserved victory.

Also delighted for Pickford cracking save.

Shame Chalobah couldn't make the squad.

I heard from a man in a pub that we had Pele on our books as a youngster ?

Madge, you seem to be addressing the players directly.

But I wonder which England player would be reading our forum.

Most are well beyond Gino's 'I offer £20 & new kit' overtures.

After his gun celebration, Ash appears to have drawn a line under his Hornet association.

Maybe Troy texts Henderson updates in the hope of a role in a shampoo commercial.

    Bobby Moore.

Furphy didn't fancy him. Thought he was too lightweight.

Nope, appears I am wrong (how tenuous does the 'associated with Watford' link have to be?)

Watford 1 Stoke 0 (FA Cup, Jan. 1970)

The only FA Cup meeting between the teams saw Watford midfielder Colin Franks smash a 25-yard screamer past England goalkeeper Gordon Banks in front of more than 23,000 fans to seal a 1-0 win in the fourth round.

Watford’s cup heroics continued as they beat Gillingham 2-1 and Liverpool by a solitary goal to reach the semi-finals for the first time since the club was formed.

Their run ended when they were hammered 5-1 by Dave Sexton’s Chelsea in the semis before being forced to settle for fourth place after a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in a playoff at Highbury.

If you mean Watford players, sadly I doubt it - during our heyday Italy and Argentina won the World Cup and as far as I recall we didn't have any world class Italian or Argie players during then, certainly not before when we were perennially a lower division club.

It's possible one or more of the 1966 winning squad started their career with us, but I'll have to check that later.

When did the FA Cup have play-offs for third place? Seems odd that that has happened and the Euro Championships don't.

Surely not as tenuous as players who have played against us!

If so you'd have to include Ardiles from 1978.. Andreas Brehme and Jurgen Klinsmann from 1990.. and half the French side from 1998 ended up in the Premiership and would have played against us in 99/2000. There's probably more.

In any event, scoring a 25 yard screamer against Gordon Banks is considerably less tenuous than losing 4-1 at home to some blonde bombshell from Germany.

We beat Chelsea at home in September 1999 when they had two current world champions in their line up.. Desailly and Descamps.

Bobby Moore is still the best shout so far.

Apart from the fact he never had anything concrete to do with Watford fc :p

PS Nobby Stiles and Bobby Charlton both played against us in 1969.. as World champs. Here you can see Stewart Scullion running rings around Charlton..

And if we exclude everybody we played against, who is the most associated World Cup winner to Watford?

He was.. i was just thinking about someone who has been actively involved with the club, not just in discussion.
    I dont think there's anyone.

Rous? Another somewhat tenuous link and we're not allowed to mention him anymore anyway.

No, i think Emma the stadium announcer will become the closest thing we've ever had :)

Nope, just checked and none of them played for us - but it wouldn't have been surprising given where Kane and Vardy started their careers.

Now the burden is on Ash to be the first Watford player to lift the World Cup - can he handle the pressure?

*not a serious comment in case some humourless soul sees this as tenuous evidence of England fans' arrogance - we'll do well to get past Sweden first!

Could she slip Gomes' name in amongst the Brazil subs?

Could be easily brushed off as human error, & a fitting tribute to the great man.

Btw, Emma is fantastic but unfortunate that the WFC announcer isn't our own Relegation Certs.

A missed global opp for a gritty appraisal of the state of the nation.

I think it was more the board had agreed upon Moore was the choice until Elton intervened. I suspect they were surprised by that but, as we now know, SEJ does things his way.

Absolutely the other way round. It was EJ that wanted Moore but elements of the Board intervened.
