I’m not sure anyone without a Balkan background can truly understand the situation there.

I’m not sure I’d trust anyone with a Balkan background to give a measured view of the situation there.

Ha very true. I once read that people from the Balkans' favourite pastimes are:

    Football
    Stitching each other up
Digging up graves and moving bodies to claim other peoples' territory.

I've visited the former Yugoslavia about 15 times and read about 150 books on it, and it's still hard to discern the truth.

150 books on Yugoslavia alone!? Blimey, that's more than I've read in my entire lifetime.

Mind you, the fact that reading anything other than bits of reference and guide books and newspaper/magazine articles just wasn't my thing for so long for whatever reason has something to do with that - but in recent years when I've got properly into reading, I've still only managed on average a few full-length novels a year.

The number of books I've read in the last ten years is likely equalled if not bettered by the number of books that I've been given over the decades by well-meaning relatives that still remain unread. One of them is Phil Ball's book on 100 years of Real Madrid, a club I frankly have no interest in, but this might convert me - anyone read it?

    Two questions regarding Miguel Layún.

    1. Why have ITV commentators decided, suddenly, startlingly and against all evidence to the contrary, that his name is actually "Miguel Lion"? It's not Lion. It's nothing like Lion. It's Lie-Oon, with the emphasis on the Ooo.

    2. Why have big teams suddenly decided that he's marvellous? Apparently he's now deciding between Arsenhole, Milan or Marseille. Even my stupid and brutish eye is able to see that he's distinctly average. Like he was when he played for us. He got acres and acres of space against South Korea and did very little with it. Rotten passes backwards when he should have slung a cross in. Slow to react to passes. One or two decent-ish crosses, but to no end - not quite accurate enough to end in a goal.

I hope Arsenal do sign him. He'll fit in nicely with their lineup of slightly sub-standard under achievers and ne-er-do-wells.

Yes, the bloody royals should keep out of it !

I actually thought he'd done quite well from the games I have seen but each to their own.

He'll do a job for someone.

Nordin was sensational tonight. Bring him home, along with football.

Well I see Morocco finally scored tonight, did the Bat assist any of their goals?

Most agree though that he's played a lot better for other teams than for Watford since he left us, including his national team. Actually the latter applies to just about all Watford players past and present at this WC.

Kind of frustrating really - makes me think that maybe we ought to look at producing a more integrated squad with more British/Irish/homegrown players and a less diverse spread of nationalities. Of course foreign players add variation and excitement but we want a group of players that can properly communicate with each other and are committed to be here for the long haul, this is probably best left for another thread though.

Nah, sell Amrabat, value has gone up, sell him and get another prospect in.

Didn't he get like 25 assists or something last season? A far cry from him running around in circles against the Dog and Duck in the Championship.

Layun is a tidy player, but not much else. Not strong enough defensively to be a left back, and not quick enough to be a winger.

If I remember rightly Layun was not shipped out by the Pozzos. For example he played very well in our first game back in the EPL and was cut above of most of our players technical. It was quite a coup to get him at the time and big news in Mexico. They sent TV crews over and so. No I think it was more his young family couldn't settle in England so he was sold before we saw the best of him. I must admit that having watched the Spanish footie a few times he has done OK and is good team player I don't get the current hype. He is not exactly young and has no trademark skills. He always seemed a decent guy with a professional attitude but why are Arsenal interested?

  16. He was loaned to Porto a couple of weeks into the season despite a promising start, and to the surprise of many fans. I think, in hindsight, that he was too attacking a player for Quique and his odious philosophy.

Because he'd be cheap and he'd probably agree to join as there's no chance the big 5 would want him

Wasn't Forestieri disappointed/emotional/in pieces when instructed to leave?

Our English contingent has been strengthened of course over the last 12 months but the Pozzo strategy of selling on players will always create a certain level of churn.

Yep, took it very well, a shame he was never really interested in playing for us after Silva went.

It’s also a shame that he wasn’t that good for us even when we did have Silva. Never ever looked like a player worth the agreed future transfer fee.

I’m not Amrabat’s biggest fan but I’d sooner have him back after his WC exploits than Carrillo.

  28. ...for Morrocco in the World Cup, picked out as their outstanding player and terrorised the European Champion's defence.

Yes, I think he might mean that.

Good competition or cover at the back or on the wing or impact sub against a weary defence. Hopefully the opposition think he's as crap as some Watford fans think he is and leave him unmarked to play those excellent and productive balls around the box that led to goals when he was at his best for us.

Fair enough if people think he's poop, but don't expect the opposition to agree with you.

Yep. And I was saying upthread that every Watford player has played better at this World Cup than for WFC - well I'll amend that to with the exception of Ighalo - he played at exactly the same level for Nigeria as he did for us post-2015.

Well, one ITV pundit (Gary Neville) actually pronounced it the right way (maybe he's been reading this board!) but another (can't remember which) pronounced just as it's written - no consistency.

Pleased Mexico went through - it must have been incredibly nerve-wracking for their fans when for so long time they were just one Germany goal from going out. Now if Senegal make it to the last 16, we still have Layun, Behrami, Niang and Ash at the World Cup...
