Actually the League Cup was taken seriously as soon as the Final was moved to Wembley in 1967. Arsenal’s defeat v Swindon two years later was hilarious. I wouldn’t disagree with you about getting rid of it now, however. Then you could play more league games before Christmas, with or without the horrendous ‘international breaks’.
The FA would never sanction their tournament not being open to all their affiliated clubs. That’s why it takes the whole season to play.

I saw the second leg of the 1962 League Cup Final. Norwich 1 Rochdale 0. Not a great game, as Norwich had won the away leg 3-0, but both teams had beaten First Division teams in the semis - Blackpool 1 Norwich 4 and whatever Rochdale did to beat the mighty Blackburn.

The first national competition Norwich had ever won. The club was so impressed it sacked the manager that summer.

Exactly. If it wasn't for that run to the final, our overall cup record would be much worse.

Yes, it's quite surprising how much ink ends up costing a business over the course of the year.

We recently showed the owner how much the business would save by switching our printer defaults to black and white v colour and his reaction was priceless.

He's preferred colour as default for years but the numbers talk.

This is miles off topic but out of interest how much could be saved in % terms and as cold, hard cash?

Sorry yes thats exactly what I meant but for some reason I was thinking league cup with two leg semis.
But yes unless a team wins the cup they lose a game to get knocked out regardless of how far they have progressed. For instance Norwich have lost ten games in the cup over the last ten years and been knocked out just the same as us.
If you were to say we don't win as many as others fair enough but you can only loose one game a year in the FA cup.
In the league cup you could of course loose a game or two in the semi or one in the semi and the final which I said but it was the wrong cup.
    Sorry for the confusion

£25 pounds to potentially watch 2 reserve sides.

Seems rather expensive - I know both clubs have to agree the price and well Man U are greedy !

Wolves were complaining about ticket prices as the away tickets were more than the home ones. Said it was the home teams decision.

£55-£65 they paid to sit in away end tonight. £31 to sit back end of fergies stand. Robbery.

There is one reason we should sack replays in the competition ultimately it’s the supporters spending again.

There's nothing that p's me off more than the season grinding to a halt every six weeks or so to accommodate sodding International breaks, and everyone knows that the League Cup is used by most top flight clubs to give fringe players/kids a game until the business end of the competition - so schedule it around the International breaks.

Play the 1st Round during the first week of the season as normal. Then make the draw for the 2nd/3rd rounds together, play the 2nd Round during the midweek before the Internationals in September, and play the 3rd Round in the couple of days after the Internationals. Most clubs have (or could have) the facility to issue 'print at home' tickets, so that needn't been an issue.

The 4th and 5th Rounds can they be played around the Internationals in October, with the two legs of the semi-final either side of the November Internationals. The Final can then be played on the first Sunday in December, and hey presto, competition gets a fresh impetus, a bit more significance, and is done & dusted before Christmas.

As good as it sounds it will not work as those pesky European league competitions will keep getting in the way!

Don't think it would as the major European competitions don't tend to be scheduled in the weeks either side of the International breaks.

In October this season they did as the fixtures were as below:

Champions/Europa League played on 1st-3rd October and 22nd-24th October.

Euro 2020 qualifiers played from 10th-15th October.

OK - so given the Saturday was October 12th, and the schedule I would propose for the League Cup if it is fitted around it, it would have been 4th Round matches Tues 8th October, 5th Round matches Wed 16th October. See where I'm coming from ???

  25. Man U are going to issue tickets to round 4 after our replay.
"We will provide further updates on our ticket situation but applications for both potential games will open at 08:00 GMT on Monday 20 January and close at 20:00 GMT on Thursday 23 January. The ballot will take place after the Tranmere-Watford game is concluded.
Tickets for successful supporters will be posted on the Friday by next-day signed delivery. There will be no option for cancellations.
    "

As they would get the whole of the Vic Rd end, that's about 5k tickets. How do they take money? Do they have a cup scheme for ST holders? Will they take money from all applicants and refund if not successful? If they are going to send tickets out on Friday, presumably they have to have both Watford and Tranmere printed and ready to go. Sounds crazy to me, but it's a mad situation tbf.

Scrap the 2 leg semi too.
For the FA cup they could settle the tie straight off the bat too. No replays, maybe extra time then pens.

To revitalize the efl cup they could make it a british cup involve Scottish welsh and Irish teams (probably pointless ) but it would give it a bit of spice.

All fine until the game in second week (3rd or 5th round) is Watford v Luton or Cardiff v Swansea or something. There's zero chance policing etc could be organised with a few days notice.

Not really as players called up for international duty would be unavailable for either round.

  30. Harefield Yellow

That's precisely my point ! The players selected for Internationals WOULDN'T be involved in the League Cup. The 'squad players' get the games they would most likely get in the competition anyway, there would be less bleating about clubs playing so-called weakened teams as they do now as it would be accepted that the competition is used to give fringe players matches, and fans of the clubs involved be able to go to a game. Frankly the International breaks bore me rigid, and annoy me immensely.

  31. GoingDown

International football died around the time they ramped up the Champions League. The only people that like it now are fans of the other British nations, kids and idiots.

Still would not work as over the international break there also U23, U20 etc games so a lot of the younger squad players are still going to be unavailable.
