I understand where you're coming from, but you've got a kind of 'three-body-problem' there: Just increasing from 2 to 3 greatly increases the odds against finding enough people interested in 3 simultaneous, different things. We need David Sawyer to quantify this. And, don't forget, interest isn't enough - each topic has to potentially promote argument, insults, indignant opinions and assumed superiority. So, for example, football - yes, war and remembrance day and Germans - yes, (looking good), ancients aliens on the history channel - nah.
But don't give up yet; you have only to think up three likely topics and then worry about how to introduce them so they get the irritated reactions going. Then sit back and watch the fun. Think of yourself as The Puppet Master.

But every team wastes good chances in every game. That's just football. Spurs and man city both wasted good chances tonight.

It's creating enough good chances that you convert at least a couple that's the trick, and we are creating lots of chances.
  4. Oh yes we did

I think you've been whooshed by RC's relentless attempts to needle people, searching for the area that will irritate them most.

I think we may have a "3rd topic candidate" that is vaguely linked, as someone has alluded to the Holy Roman Empire, which for most of its existence was a sort of quasi-German federation.

The well into which I am dipping my linguistic ladle in this moment is David Lynch’s (auto) biography.

    Unusually, it is both.

He comes across as mildly eccentric & wholly genial.

Please let’s not digress into Twin Peaks, however.

Emperor Franz appeared in an ad for a mobile phone company & as part of his remuneration requested the number 0176/666666.

Unfortunately, within days he was inundated with calls from people assuming it was a phone sex hotline, 6 in German being sechs.

More recently, the EU has assumed this role.

    Sounds a good idea.

Well, we used to get alliances to outflank and outnumber the dominant power on the Continent. Now we're taking on the dominant power with no allies whatsoever. Some people haven't learnt anything from history

I haven't written as much about WW1 for decades. My special subject was The British Economy Between the (World) Wars, so if anybody would like to give me an opportunity to show off* after the Newcastle match, I'm up for it. The Jarrow March might be a good link.

    * After all these years, of course, I remember most of my conclusions but not the supporting evidence to justify them

Forgot about that. That metric certainly leans towards valuing clear cut chances over great hit long shots. I know that’s a bit obvious but it was what I was thinking in my original post.

The best example was Foster’s fingertip save. Great shot, great save but I suspect the xG would be less than 0.1 for that effort. xG for Saturday was 2.2 v 0.49. **** me this is boring. Carry on with the war stuff.
