Watford FC 2-0 West Ham United - 19/11/2017

Discussion in 'Match Day' started by Steve Leo Beleck, Nov 13, 2017.

  1. We were clearly the better team, although once again we hand the opposition chances on a plate

Unfair to knock any players, we all know where our weaknesses are

POTS is going to be really difficult this year - Doucoure, Gomes, Richarlison, Kiko have been imperious

Silva can do one after that interview

Great to hear Gold sung for Ighalo again -smiling in the Sky studio.

Doucs and Rich have Duracell batteries, never stop running.

Hughes and Gomes - great games.
    Kiko played well.
    Mapps solid.

Good win, does this now mean Toffees bid £20m or have a quiet tapping up word and say we’ll triple your salary if u resign?
Very disruptive and the blue barstewards won’t go away.

    Enjoyed that immensely.

I admit to a few nerves pre kick off after 3 straight defeats but those evaporated quickly today. Should have drawn with Chelsea and Everton (if not won at least one) so I agree with Marco, results didn't match what happened on the pitch.

I struggle to think of a time we've been in the prem that we had a spell like the one in the second half resulting in the much deserved second goal.

West ham were dirty and could have been down to 9

Hearing them in meltdown at the end was glorious

Great performance, the spell before the second goal was as good as I’ve seen us. Britos had a really poor first half, not so bad in the second - now we’ve won I can chuckle at his ludicrous shot in the first half after about a minute of possession!

Gomes was a game saver again - what a signing he’s been for us.

Hughes was very good with control in tight spots - a goal and an assist. Great game.

Richalison was Richarlison and Doucoure was Doucoure- you know what you’ll get from them both - love it,

Hoping Pereyra can stay fit for a while.

Gray for me looked better than before - not perfect and never will be - but helped us to the win.

Really, bar Britos, no one played badly.

Everyone played well except Britos, who did everything wrong.

As someone else said, we were utterly dominant and a class above, but West Ham should have had 2 or 3 but for the excellent Gomes.

The only downside: I just watched Silva's post match interview, and he could not more obviously be vying for a move to Everton. Can we replicate this football without him? I'm not so sure.

Yayyyy. After a week of so much hot air off the pitch, a really great performance on it (although helped by some woeful West Ham finishing).

Silva showed today why he’s (sadly) so in demand. Set the team up right. Got the left wing-back call right. We looked fitter, pressed harder and played in a much more joined up fashion than our opponents. A very decent showing.

Plaudits to Gomes for one of the best double saves I’ve ever seen. Amazing. Lovely to see Hughes finding his feet at the club after not featuring in the opening matches. Very tidy debut from Zeegelar, especially after that elbow after six seconds. Femenia looked decent again, hopefully injury not bad. And Richarlison just oozed class again, and works so so hard. What a signing.

Yes we got lucky with a handball for the second goal, and yes better sides would have punished us at times today, but there were passages of play today that were a joy to watch. Our game management was so much better than of late, and when you sit there watching a side containing the likes of Richarlison and Pereyra and coached by a guy being coveted by ‘bigger’ clubs, you realise just how great an era this is at Watford.

We can’t control what happens about Silva’s future but what we can control should be our joy and pride at performances like today. Seeing us 8th in the table, while today’s opponents (who we’ve now beaten in each of our last 4 PL seasons) drop into the bottom three with their fans chanting sack the board and opposing their new manager. We’re making good progress as a club, and the future looks bright.

Well, that was lovely! Whether it was a mix of West Ham being that awful or us just being great, I thoroughly enjoyed watching us play this evening.

Gomes wow wow wow. What an absolute hero. I'm so glad he made those saves live on TV so everyone could see why we love him.

Femenia was a great outlet, SO much space most the game. Delivers a great ball majority of the time but we don't really have a big lump of a striker to make it worthwhile. If Okaka was on he would've scored from one of the countless crosses.

Zeegelar was impressive and it was refreshing to see something / someone different in that position. Lost his man a couple times so I can see why he's not trusted in a back 4 but he's strong, athletic and looks like great competition for Holebas.

Mariappa was outstanding in the air against Carroll. Won a lot more than he had any right to.

Kabasele pretty similar, done well defensively, shocking with the ball.

Britos was awful I thought, I'm just bored of it now. On his day he is great but too often he'll either lose his head or play a awful pass or just something s*it. Needs to be moved on.

Doccoure is simply fantastic. No other words. What an engine. Abdoulaye Doc-toure esque runs at points.

Cleverley done what Cleverley does. Efficient, solid 7/10 as he is most weeks and that is very nice, doesn't need to be spectacular.

Hughes was my MOTM. Found space time and time again in what was a weird position since he wasn't a traditional winger, lovely first touch, gorgeous weight on his passes, was just a joy to watch him today. Now, people should be laughing at this but honestly, if Livermore is the standard of English central midfielders then I cannot see why Hughes & Chalobah shouldn't be on that plane to Russia this summer.

Richarlison will be playing Champions League football by 2020, not a single shred of doubt in my mind. I plan to enjoy watching every single minute of watching him play whilst he's here. That's all that needs to be said about him.

Gray is a weird one. How good he was depends on what you're measuring him by. As a goal scoring striker? Poor. As a target man? Excellent. Held the ball up well, made great runs occupying the defence, brought others into play. One thing though, he's simply not as quick as we thought / was told. He got out run by Ogbonna. Not £18 million worth of striker but he didn't ask us to pay that so it's not his fault.

That was great, easy but great. Slightly worried that West Ham probably could've scored three but who cares. Up to 8th, ate a bit into the negative goal difference and look like a real team. COYH!

I’m actually pretty suprised at Silva, the league now is a completely different animal to how it was 5-10 years ago. Anything below the top 6 is much of a muchness, £100m+ a year TV revenue has seen to that. Everton are a bigger club historically, they’ve got a bigger ground and more fans, but other than that they are no more equipped to break into the the top 6 than the rest of us. You’d think he’d want to hold out for a bigger club, Everton to me are a bit like purgatory, neither one or the other.

I think Gomes deserves a worthy shout out for his multiple world class saves.

That first chance they had where he tipped it round which led to the silence of the crowd as we all watched it almost trickle into the bottom left corner was a fantastic moment - especially when we all cheered as if we bloody scored when it narrowly missed.

The triple save was a great moment to savour and I wouldn't be surprised to see it as a contender for save(s) of the month. Perhaps that knock on the head at Everton is a blessing in disguise and has perhaps unleashed a new 'in his prime' Gomes?

West Ham were really poor though. Even though they had some clear cut chances, they never really looked up for it except for being complete and utter dirty barstards by kicking, elbowing and more kicking. This was mostly caused by that Donkey of a man... "Not so 'Andy" Carroll

Britos was, and is such a farkin liability. I even thought that tackle which got him a yellow could have easily been a red card if the ref saw it from another angle. In fact, I can't believe he was kept on throughout the entire game whilst on a yellow... Prodl was almost begging to come on; whilst flicking his luscious locks.

Anyways, I would praise all of the players (bar a few) but I'd simply rather down a few pints and enjoy the victory (whilst it lasts)

Just back from the pub. I know it was only West Ham, but

Gomes is a star. That double save was exceptional.

Fememia must be the best free transfer we have ever had !

Doucoure. Not sure I saw him misplace a pass all game. Best midfielder I 've seen in a Watford shirt and I
I've been watching since 66. Mabe the beer talking but I don't think so.

Everyone played well today an I really hope Silva tells Everton to **** off.

I like Silva and hope he stays. But he is being given ample opportunity to say something clearer and put this increasing circus to bed - and if anything, he’s happily feeding it. The only acceptable reason for answers he has given post game is if there are negotiations going on, which I don’t really believe as I think Gino would have stood him down from being in charge. If the stories are true and Gino has said ‘not at any cost’, then Silva really needs to back that up now - he’s being given the chance to. I don’t really expect him to come out and say he was never interested - I wouldn’t blame him if he was. But there needs to be something official said soon. I’d say if the club haven’t commented on it in the next 24hrs, there’s something going on.

Today’s game - excellent, even though WHU really didn’t look bothered at all. They are in desperate trouble. Would go into a bit more depth about my thoughts on the game, but Silva’s post game musings have tempered my happiness somewhat.

Whilst I think we’d have probably been punished on another day or if we didn’t have Gomes between the sticks, that was comfortable. Nice to get back to winning ways after the last couple of games and there were some big positives tonight.

West Ham really should have been down to ten fairly early, but definitely by half time. Quite how Carroll gets away with simulation when already on a yellow and with a free kick given against him I don’t know. There were some nasty moments too with Cresswell grabbing hold of Hughes’ face and Carroll late on Richarlison. Refereeing standard was fairly abysmal (as per).

Gomes fantastic saves, Andre Gray really unlucky - some great runs and fairly tireless performance. Just doesn’t quite get what he deserves playing in this team. Thought Hughes was fantastic. Had a good game at Everton and didn’t deserve to come away on the losing team, but he was class today. Flu pure and Richarlison also with good stints.

The ten minutes building up to that second was wonderful to behold, and finally we got what we deserved after some great play. West Ham just couldn’t get the ball back or get out. They look like they’re in big trouble with Moyes. No pressing, poor work rate, poor finishing. Fairly uninspiring from them.

    Onwards and upwards!

It’s always a weird one that, did we play well or where they ****. I actually think they looked better than Everton or stoke but we just kept closing them down and stopping them playing, hence the ridiculous tackles they were putting in.

I think the squad we have has the ability to make some very average teams look poor, the speed we break at is excellent and I don’t remember the last time I watched us this confident in possession.

    Here is my reading.
Watching game on delay after driving back from London. Listened to five live who praised Watford for most of the game.

    Zeegelar
Nice crisp direct purposeful balls, looks better than expected

    Hughes
    Looks an excellent signing

    Gray
I haven’t been a fan. I really haven’t. If you are upfront you need to score and he seems to always have several crucial (in my mind) misses a match. However as a target man. He held that ball like glue for Hughes’ goal and set it up. The fee for a decent target man in the league we are in is worth it. This game is the point where I have turned to liking the tattooed Luton thug

    Gomes
One of our top 3 goalies of all time and needs to go in the hall of fame. Amazing triple save

    Richarlison
From his first game we knew he was class. Again will go down as one of the greatest and most skilful to wear a yellow shirt. As his native countryman said in a long forgotten thread good Brazilian teams always have a hungry young winger who’s job it is to make things happen. He does that and more. A joy to watch. A Brazilian and artist in every sense. Sublime

Tonycotonstache...can I join others in expressing my sympathy about your loss. My Mum passed away in August so I think I can understand a little as to how you are feeling. I hope you were able to enjoy today a little. Strangely enough we won 2-0 the next match after my bereavement and I know it lifted me greatly. That’s what football can do, and why we all expand so much passion and energy in following it.

Until Silva ever does the dirty on us, he remains our Head Coach. The one who masterminded today, and four other victories this season. The one who has got us playing good football (despite a few bad wobbles at times). The one who has already got us half way to safety with only a third of the season gone. I believe that if people are going to enjoy today’s good victory, then at least credit him for his role in it rather than wishing him on his way just because he hasn’t expressed his feelings of loyalty in the manner we’d much prefer. He ain’t gone anywhere yet!

Can’t believe you’d want to leave an exciting forward thinking club for one near the bottom of the league who’ve never achieved much. A few more fans maybe but you’d have to live up north, in the cold, where they don’t have electricity or proper biscuits
