Not having played is no excuse for Success. He came on to do one job, tried a stupid no look pass and lost the ball.

Not having played has zero to do with that, it was just absolutely ******ous. It says a lot about his mindset that he thinks it’s clever to try unnecessary showboating against a team like Man Utd for a team in our position.

Oh I thought the discussion was about Gray. Apologies.

I dont disagree with any of that really. I was trying to b optimistic! If they can the Pozzos must pay the extra to get loanees in on 1st Jan. Regarding Welbeck, he's a great player but Andre Gray has a much better PL strike rate than Welbeck. Just saying.

Welbeck has always been a bit part player at bigger clubs, not to be mention being injured regularly as well.

Gray may have a better scoring record, but I’d back Welbeck to improve his scoring record at smaller club as a regular starter. We’re certainly creating enough chances for him to be tucking away.

He’s technically an infinitely better player than Gray too, so at the very least he could bring the ball under control a lot better then Gray does. He’s also a lot more mobile and skillfull then Deeney is.

I think if he had a decent run in the team he’d thrive, but sadly at the age of 29 it doesn’t seem like he’ll ever stay fit enough for long enough to find out.

Welbeck would have had considerably more chnaces to score at Man U and Arsenal than he will get with us. His scoring rate will go down not up with us. However he will be constantly injured so the debate is a bit irrelevant.

Although it was in our favour yesterday, I was surprised at the small amount of added time allowed at the end of the second half (3 minutes) and I do wonder how these times are arrived at, given that they can be important when the score is close.
I thought it was pretty standard in England to add 30 seconds for each separate substitution and goal celebration. This alone would add up to 4 minutes yesterday (6 subs and 2 goals) and on top of that an allowance should surely be added for VAR deliberations before you get to any consideration for slowing the play (Foster).

I was astonished by that. I was expecting at least 5 or 6 minutes. A couple of times when we were slow at throws he was doing that pointless thing of pointing to his watch. 30 seconds per sub for all six subs is all he added on.

    Made up for last week.

Had we gone and attacked Man U it would have played into their hands as even OGS said they prefer to play on the break.

Totally. It was another refreshing display by everyone. Pearson is already making me eat my words and long may it last. He is squeezing every little bit out of the players. It's like watching a different team for me. The disastrous appointment of OSF is really at the forefront now. Just hope the displays over the last four matches are here to stay because its shown what we're really capable of with the right man in charge. Boxing day is going to be a massive fight but one I'm looking forward to. Let's hope we start the way we have been and dig out another result. Confidence and momentum is the key now. Roll that onto Villa at home who are in free fall and missing key players and the table will be looking so much better.

I think you'll find Hughes really laid into him for that. Good to see IMO and what a performance again from Will. He was an absolute menace flying into challenges and very calm and collected on the ball when needed. An absolute revelation in the deeper roll.

Success must go, he is one of the most overrated/ineffective players we've had at the club. Dead wood #1.

Yes agreed. It's going to be an interesting window come January. Just hope that they back Pearson if he has given any suggestions. Hopefully someone will take a gamble on Gray so we can get a proper challenge for Deeney up top. But fingers crossed its Pedro.

The performance yesterday was superb. We look like a really well drilled team. Hughes, Kaba, Mapps & Capoue were excellent. It's been a masterstroke playing Hughes a little deeper alongside Capoue, we look much more solid like this. Big Nige is the man,

Can we spare a thought or all those Manure fans who came expecting an easy victory and left empty handed making that long trek home to Surrey.

Fluke up to a point, but he had a shot rather than trying to keep possession which is what would have happened under Florrie.

But for all his faults, Gray works hard. Whereas Big Isaac just seems to be going through the motions.

While I agree with your assessment of Gray, he really isn’t worse than Success.

I've always liked Hughes. I think the idea of playing him on the wing was to cover Jammaat or Kiko, both of whom are better going forward. Mariappa is an out-and-out defender, better at full back than at centre back, and doesn't need as much covering.

But I'd rather have Janmaat at back, Hughes in the middle where he's most effective, amd hope that the team will be well enough organised to cover when our backs go forward

It's like they do it deliberately by being so crap when they're on the pitch, you think the ones on the bench or injured are going to come back and be ace, then they switch places.

At various points over the last couple of seasons, I've convinced myself that Okaka, Success, Gray and even Peñaranda are going to click and become the solution.

Au contraire, the sight of two Man Utd players storing into him of the touchline (just before 90 mins) and then bouncing off him was a sight to behold - and he kept the ball.

This. 100% of shots not taken fail to go in.

Plus, his pace makes defenders afraid, like Zaha and some others. Afraid players make unforced errors.

I presume Success was put on to hold the ball up, shield it in the corners, etc. He is built for it, Gray isn't. He only had to do it for a handful of minutes. The fact that he didn't (wouldn't?) do it shows what a w**ker he is. I cannot get inside his thinking - is it arrogance, laziness, pig-headedness, thickness? In all other circumstances I would take Gray for his effort and movement. And yes, his ball-control is appalling, but even so..

Yes. I wonder also if at least some opposition players have not done their homework and know nothing about him. He often doesn't look the real deal and may catch a few out. The look on Wan (-der-boy) Bissaka's face a split second after he had dived in is a pleasure to behold.

Re Hughes position pre Pearson and now is about a tactical formation and not about previously out there to help out a RWB or FB - we were playing a narrow formation before with a 35m winger on the bench or out of position. We have changed tactics and formation and it will allow Hughes to play in or around his preferred position or indeed Perayra to play on point like he did in the semi against Wolves. It allows Deeney to come deeper and hold the ball and spread to Sarr & Dele who can do their thing out wide. It was noticeable that Doucs was allowed to attack crosses and got on the end of a couple himself and nearly scored.

Apart from keeping a clean sheet against United, we won our first home game since April and scored from a set piece for the first time since I can't remember which I'm sure everyone noticed that Dele had lost the honour of taking dead balls to Hughes. All in all a good day.

He did do it. He came on in the 87th minute and held the ball well on 3 occasions but on one time he did the hard bit but instead of laying it back up the line he tried a pass inside to a midfielder but he couldn't get to it and set United on a break. It was a mistake but other players all missed passes during the game, he knows it was wrong but other than that he did his job.

The point is he tried a no look pass which didn’t work, not the time, place or situation to do so in any circumstances. Why he would choose to do that under the circumstances raises so many questions about his character.
