It's one of those rare occasions where everyone here is completely unified. There is no single individual (except maybe ManInBlack aka Leigh-Ann Pinnock) who is not in utter contempt for Gray as a person and footballer and a desire for Deeney to disappear in a puff of smoke.

Let's not even get into their wages.

Bit like most of the team they were going by reputation.

They really expected us to hammer them .

Bit like in the first game !

Least we won this time .

We seem to play better against teams who don’t expect us to be any good .

I get your point but it wasn't a completely depleted team most teams have a few injuries, 8 of their player had started in their previous games. They didn't make their subs until the 70th minute, they were already 2-0 down at that stage and we were cruising I am not sure it would have made any difference if they had brought more experienced players on.

Poor first half. Some of the passing from Troost and Chalobah was awful. second half was better. The comedy first goal helped but the second goal was excellent.
now the controversial stuff. I thought Sarr was better but could do with staying on his feet and I thought Deeney was ok. Held the ball up and his passing was better than most. Not a goal threat which for a forward is not great but he was ok today.

Well he didn't get tackled by a Huddersfield striker for starters.

Looked composed for what he needed to do. Real focus and drive to be the number one, rather than messing around with a GoPro.

Despite all the doom and gloom in the second tier only twice before have we had more points than we currently have after 23 games - 1981/2 with 44 points, and 2007/8 with 43 points.

Careful saying Deeney played alright on here. Once a player is deemed ***** (and for the most part, he is) there's no going back.

I totally agree and whilst I've implied similar, you have summarised our attacking deficiencies spot on for me.!

OK we counter quite well with Sarr and Sema, but then our strikers arrive too late. Most attacks come from long diagonal balls to Sarr wide right, or by tippy tapping down a wing in a 2 yard tramline which is very predictable to defend against. Our offencive ball carrying across the middle of the park is around zero. Ngakia and sema give it a go but our guys are typically not awake to it. Most other teams have midfielders that will push on with the ball which causes disruption to opposition and more teammates to pass to etc etc. I can't remember the last time I saw a proper pacey one-two.?
    Question is why.?

It's not about that though, is it? It's not as if he's gone and got himself a couple of goals and assists today and people are arguing that he was poor on the back of that. People are praising him and saying he was "decent" because he held the ball up a bit and played a couple of simple passes. That's literally all you can say he did and all he's being praised for - the absolute, minimal basics of his role. That's how low his bar is.

His movement was still appalling, he still berated his team mates when they didn't find him on the back of his terrible movement despite the fact he wasn't in logical positions to receive the ball, he still offered absolutely zero attacking threat and still scored zero goals. Why should he be getting a pat on the back for a couple of basic lay offs that amounted to nothing of any real substance?

yep game starts , he swore at the ref , moaned a lot and then committed a really bad fowl which he should have walked for , then continued to moan to everybody that would listen , (un)lucky Huddersfield didn’t kick the **** out him in retaliation

He was decent. Not great, probably not even good. But not crap. That's all people are saying. No one is saying he doesn't need replacing, just offering their view on the performance they witnessed.

I think it was a decent number 10 performance, although he was once again anonymous as a striker. Hopefully he was playing the role asked of him.

3 points is the maximum and can only beat the team infront of you. Under Ivic this probably would have been 0-0.
Didn’t pay a tenner to watch as I’m not a mentalist after seeing Hughes and zinc on the bench.
By the looks of the comments Gray was turd as usual. When does his contract expire so we can let him go in a free?

Ok, well I and others have provided what I/we saw in his performance in regards to how I cannot understand how it could possibly be viewed as "decent" just because of the basics he did at times, but it is what it is.

I think for a performance to be labelled as "decent" it should require more than just providing a couple of simple lay offs - regardless of whether he played as a number 10 or an out and out striker - particularly when there are also a number of clear negative areas to that players performance as well.

.. And how yesterday is "holding the ball up" these days... It just means "got a big lump up top to bang long balls up to..."

Pedro's goal sums up why Deeney is such a limited goal threat. Pedro was the one that was near the halfway line and sprayed the ball out to Kiko. He then makes a long sprint to get into the box, making up about 20 yards on Troy and because he's run from so far out and gambled, no-one has picked him up.

Deeney's movement on the other hand, is terrible. He's jogging and reacts far slower than Pedro when Kiko beats the man. He eventually does a little sprint but it's more in hope than expectation and he is never free of his marker, who actually reacts ahead of him too.

A lot of truth in the cliche that the first yard of pace is in the head.

Pedro is hungry to do well and wants it. Deeney and Gray clearly don't; they're doing the motions and have been for a long time. The hunger and desire is gone.

It's nothing to do with age because Cleverley's goal today was 100% down to desire and graft.

Considering how many games this season our strikers have failed to do the basics, I'll take that at this stage. A 6/10 performance (in my view) counts as decent, but you see it differently, that's fair enough.

From memory I think Deeney has had about 3 'decent' games this year. Today, Norwich, and I *think* Forest away, though may be misremembering. The rest of the time he's ranged from anonymous, to so ***** that we'd honestly be better playing with 10 men.

Okay mate... If you want to have a discussion without being a condescending cvnt then feel free.

Second striker, number 10, whatever you want to call it. Whatever he was today certainly wasn't a striker. Reminded me somewhat of his first PL season, but without the presence in the box, and with no danger whatsoever of him scoring a goal.

But actually winning a few headers, bringing others into play, and progressing forward rather than playing backwards.

One of the things I dislike most about Deeney is, as Nath mentioned, the moaning and the throwing of the arms up when more talented players than he, make a mistake. I'm sure there was more of that today, but I also heard a huge amount of instruction and encouragement coming from him. In fact he was pretty much the only voice I could hear, apart from the occasional shout from Bachmann.

Yeah that’s great and all, but he’s a meant to be striker. The only positive thing you seem to be saying about him is that he shouted some instructions?

Goals are overrated, the real key to promotion is a non goal scoring forward who also can’t create anything but is good at shouting at his teammates.

Tbf if a 19 year old was slower than as guy with a bad knee who has never been that quick and 12 years older I would be a little concerned!

Deeney certainly isn’t and has never been a number 10.

A really physically tough number 9 roughing up defenders and getting into the right places which obviously doesn’t happen now .

I genuinely think that Deeney hides when we attack the box. He doesn’t want to get on the end of crosses, or be first to the ball. He always positions himself behind a defender when the ball is out wide and never makes a move to get in front of them. It’s cowardly, and honestly sums up the mentality of too many in our squad who are too timid to take the game by the balls and impose themselves on the opposition.

JP going after Sarr is exactly what we need, because for all his talent, he’s one who has failed all too often to take risks,” and try to make things happen.

We need young players with a hunger and desire to improve themselves and win games for this club.

First half was very boring and lethargic- Deeney should have been sent off, VAR would have taken a look at it and straight away told the ref to send him off.

Second half was much better (as has been the case in so many games this season). Good pressing from Cleverley for the opener, I'm not quite sure how or indeed why their keeper was so slow to kick the ball. Moment of madness.

Although I was getting used to the CB pairing of Kabasele and Troost-Ekong, I have been really impressed with Sierralta. He seems to compliment TE very well, is composed on the ball and good in the air. Think he will become our main centre back.

Overall not a fantastic performance but 3 points is 3 points, onto Tuesday now. COYH
