Fair enough. I'll try and get up there this year.

Try the end of the 62-63 season...we were well average even in Div3 terms...then we signed the great Pat Jennings & managed to totally c0c5 up promotion the next season, allowing palar5e to pip us...I think that's when my animosity towards them started.

Went there on a Tuesday night in the GT days on the special train...half hour walk to & from the station in the pouring rain, lost 1-0 & got home at 3AM after setting off at 4PM. A real pleasure!

Our UK factory is in Manchester & the workforce is pretty well evenly split between United & Citeh....always was even before the latter got good. And a good many of them have season tickets & have had for years, so I'd say Manc-born United fans are every bit as committed & "genuine" as any other club's fans. They are often disparaging towards "outsiders" giving them a "plastic" reputation.

Not sure if this is a whoosh but I’ll rise -

you can say virtually the same about Pool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs but guess what, we’ve beaten them all with our bargain basement teams the past few years.

It will be closer than most games against the famous Red Devils and what a pleasure if we get any sort of result.

The media will be on it all week and poor José will be looking even more miserable again. :(

This is partly the result of the fact that pretty much everyone in the north hates southerners (and hence southern teams) whereas those in the south are just apathetic about the north. Living in Guildford and supporting Man U wouldn't be frowned on. Living in Halifax and supporting Chelsea would be.

Was on the same train and also got thrown out for 'jumping up and down' on the terrace as the Hornets came out.

Had to pay again and go in the Carlisle end.

Need a stato for this please:

Apart from Man City who always do us over (& excluding the new teams that have come up this season who we haven't played yet) I get the feeling we've beaten every other team at least once since our PL return?

    Can anyone confirm?

I gather it's north of Stevenage. I believe if you stand on top of a bus shelter in Stevenage and look the opposite direction to "south" you can even see it.

You know ive always wondered where "proper football fans" consider the line between themselves and non proper football fans lies.

Take me for instance. I watch 99.9% of games online or down the pub (sometimes wearing my replica Watford top) I started watching Watford in the mid 70's but i havent been a committed fan since the early 90's. Am i a "proper football fan"?
Take the Leeds & Man United fans i knew in Aylesbury in the 1970's who ran coaches to every game they played. Some of them still go to games when they can.. but probably not so often as they now have family's/careers/mortgages. Are they "proper football fans"
Take the Norwegian Man U fan i met on the golf course this year who i joked with cause we were playing them the next day. When i asked him where he was watching the match he said he'd be using his season ticket at Old Trafford this time cause he wasnt working that weekend. Is he a "proper football fan"?

Or are "proper football fans" those that live within walking distance of the ground.. those that have season tickets cause they are young enough to not have too many commitments?

Proper football fans are those who have a genuine affiliation with their club and do not just support someone because they are good. Simples really.

  19. Stevohorn

    Stevohorn Watching Grass Grow

That's what it isnt really.. simples.

A lot of the Norwegians ive met support the two big North West sides. They probably did that because they were good.. and had no other affiliation to the clubs. Some of them are season ticket holders who spend thousands every season getting to games.
    How would we label them?

  20. Meh!

    Meh! Pre-Dictator

    We should make a questionnaire!

For example, I asked some one recently who they supported. They said manu.

So I asked how many games they'd been to? "None."

I accept that. It's not easy. So they're on TV a lot. Do you watch them on TV? "Not really. Don't really have time."

Oh ok. So you must be from there to support them if you never watch them. "No. From round here."

Errr, ok. So why do you support them?

It's all about the emotional attachment.

I watch all kinds of football and sports. I enjoy them all. I applaud a good goal, a sub-10 second sprint or a nice backhand.

But a total grubber off the shin of a Hornet into an opposition net sends me into a strange euphoria that is akin to madness. There's that step between a fanatic and a lunatic that defines a supporter.

  22. Stevohorn

    Stevohorn Watching Grass Grow

So it's a mental health issue?

  23. Sahorn

    Sahorn Reservist

It’s definitely an emotional attachment and many ‘normal’ (non football ) people would say it’s a mental health issue.

I met someone in Plymouth who supports Newcastle. Mid seventies age. Has replica shirts and stuff.
Do you go to watch them? No.
Have you ever watched them? Once at Arsenal.

Don’t u support the Argyle? Sort of, but Newcastle are my top division team!

And he said ‘My son supports Newcastle because I do, my grandsons support Newcastle and my great grandson has just got a Newcastle baby grow.’

So why on earth do you support Newcastle?
“Because when I was a boy they were playing Manchester City (?) in the cup final and my friends were mainly supporting City so I decided to support Newcastle. They won the cup, and I’ve supported them ever since”.

    It’s bizarre.
But is he a committed fan? Seems to be in his own way.
Is he a plastic fan? ???
Is he an emotional fan? - yes, although he’s never been to Newcastle.
Does he have a mental health issue? - No, (although the missus would say he does).

    So it takes all sorts.
I’ve been an emotional, committed fan of Watford since Keith Eddy and Stuart Scullion graced the Vic.
I remember as a boy feeling my heart in my mouth when Workington Town (or whoever) were even in our penalty area.
The joy of winning never leaves you when you’re a fan with an emotional attachment, no matter how old you are.

    The missus doesn’t understand it.
It takes all sorts, and ‘fans’ come in all sorts of disguises.
All I know is having a passion in your life makes you feel alive, whatever that passion is.

WFC winning is a feeling like no other, especially when it’s against teams like Man U with all their hoards of genuine, emotional fans and even more hoards of their plastic, non emotional fans.

    Here endeth the lesson.

I think it will be different for every one.
But if you've never been to a single game and don't come from the area, never watch them on tv and have no emotional connection - cant really be said to be a fan

  25. Stevohorn

    Stevohorn Watching Grass Grow

I dont know anyone who doesnt watch their team on tv.. everybody does these days because it's so easy to do so. Ok there might be the odd oddball who doesnt but ive never met any of them.

There's different levels of supporter commitment sure.. but again how do we judge "emotional connection"? Not sure how i would classify that. Does the guy in Thailand wearing a Liverpool shirt have an Emotional connection to the club? I bet he would think so.

    Exactly.

"Man Utd" is the stock answer for people who don't really like football that much, but want to be seen as 'one of the lads'. It's like answering C of E to your religion when you've never been near a church in your life.

Often they don't really seem to care whether Man Utd win or lose. Indeed they usually have little idea of whether Man Utd have won or lost, since they're not really that much into football. If you're lucky they might know one or two of the names of the biggest current stars and they have the 'Loyal Man Utd Supporter' dressing gown or whatever that someone's bought them for Xmas and that's it.

Of course there's going to be variations amongst their fans and I'm sure there must be one or two genuine Mancs who understand and appreciate football amongst them. But they're completely drowned out, submerged and made invisible by an enormous mooing avalanche of assorted non-footballing gonks.

Unfortunately yes. I have been in their houses over the years. I've seen all manner of unpleasant united detritus.

Dressing gowns. Socks. Pants. Tea cosies. Nighties. Teddy bears. Air fresheners. Lunch boxes. Wallets. Beer glasses. Alarm clocks. Fake plastic street name plates that say 'Old Trafford' on them. Egg cups. Bobble hats. Calculators. Playing cards. Miniature cuddly nodding Ryan Giggs's. Notebooks. Console controllers. Cocktail stirrers. Perfume. Trainers. Ballpoint pens. Santa sacks. Pencil cases. knitted gloves. Gym bags.

There's absolutely nothing sacred. Nothing at all.

They'd stamp 'MANCHESTER UNITED' on the front of the gospels if nobody stopped 'em...

I don't really care why people support the teams they do.

The only time it bothers me is when someone who has no connection to a big team but has "chosen" it as "their" team and then go all Billy big ******** with me when they do well against us.

I didn't choose Watford it chose me. But I'm glad it did. As Clive says, the people who pick a top club to support will never get the feelings we get when we get that unexpected win against the "big boys".

My sister in-law is the worst. She works for a top six club. She has no interest in football but is always digging at me about how "her team" are doing so much better than us.

She works at Tottenham. I haven't heard from her this week. Strange that.

The moment I started to hate Manure and what it stands for is when I went into Clinton Cards about 20 years ago.

They had a Man Utd section. No other teams were represented. Just Man Utd. They had every piece of detritus you could imagine stamped with their badge. The price was doubled for the privilege of course and people were buying it.

It was the moment, in my view, that the Manchester United brand saw itself as being bigger than football. And they are probably right.

OK imagine yourself as the CEO of Clinton Cards. You are gonna bring out a new set of merchandise tied in with a football club.
Do you choose to use one of the biggest football clubs in the world to help sell as many units as possible? or Crewe Alexandra?

Exactly right. So instead of having a football section it went for a Manchester United section.

I don't blame Clinton Cards. I don't even blame Manchester United for maximising their profits. I blame the plastic"fans" who buy this sh1t merchandise and make one club think it's bigger than the game itself.

When Liverpool dominated the game in the 80s I never once went into a national retailer in the south of England to only find Liverpool merchandise.

Manchester United took it to that level and I hate them for that.
