That wasn’t the first time Holebas has failed to show any urgency in taking a free kick or corner just before half-time. The ref has no obligation to add on time to allow for his tardiness.

I assumed you meant Andy Kennedy. He was hilariously bad.

Really disappointed to read the criticism and insults directed at Gray. I was one of many who wanted him moved on in the summer but he's been terrific as one of a two up front. 2 great goals and great movement upfront. He's not the best striker in the prem but he looks a different player this season and is working his socks off, pulling defenders out of position creating space for others eg the Hughes goal. He absolutely deserves his place. I think Gracia has it right, using Success in 20 minute cameos.
C'mon give the guy a break. Can't hold playing for the scummers against him forever. Garner, Chamberlain and Spring didn't get the same level of hate. Will be interesting to see what happens if the Brazilian (Talisca?) join in Jan.

Not as long ago as Andy Porter, although Ron Burgess I do know worked in a warehouse many years after getting the sack from Watford as Manager, (same company I worked for) can't see any of our recent managers doing likewise!

He actually came with a reputation as being a good player, certainly wasn't for us although played quite a few games for Brighton after us if I remember rightly!

Paul Mayo and the old stock favourite Jamie Morilee anyone?

You need to be superman to play upfront by yourself in the Prem.

Gray appears to be doing everything he can to take his chance in the two.

Can’t ask for more than that.

Having said that, I would love an upgrade.

I suspect the top 3 may be miles ahead this season.

Is he a WFC supporter ? Or just someone who is sick of the ( admittedly waning) Man Utd bias in the media ?

Thought the headline was hilarious, but this scathing endightment against Mourinhos anti football was my favourite...

"For Mourinho, football is essentially a game of two penalty boxes with a big bit of grass in the middle, and if you get the right men in the right positions at either end, then you can render the grassy bit in the middle largely academic"

What a fine voice that forklift has!

    Ah.

How good are you with a forklift?

    It’s the killer question.

    Btw, I don’t have a warehouse but I wouldn’t tell that **** that.

I think Gray is playing at full throttle this season, which is great, but if I'm honest, I still don't think it's enough.

This is not a pop at Gray, as I admire a lot of his game. His work rate and selfless runs are tremendous but I think we need a striker who is more of a goal threat than he appears to be. I'd like to see how many shots on target, or even off target he's had this season. I'd be surprised if it's more than 4.

Deeney is not going to score too many, so if we're playing with two up front, at least one of them has to be potent. If both strikers end up with 15 goals a piece, then I'm wrong in what I say, but in any case we do need at least one more striker as a viable alternative.

Personally, I do not think we're playing Hughes in his best position. Wide right does not suit him. He's far better in the middle, but needs must. We do not really have a wide man on the right without Deulofeu.

He's doing his best, but his performances are understandably not quite as good right now because of where he's being asked to play.

I hope we see a bit more of Kiko now. He looked good when he came on for Janmaat. Kiko and Deulofeu I'd love to see on the right.

Chalobah needs to start playing now too.

Gray has had 8 shots this season: 3 on target, 3 blocked and 2 off target.

For info, Deeney has had 11 shots so far: 7 on target, 2 off target and 2 on target.

They've started well, with 4 goals in 5 games as a partnership. If they get to 20 between them, we'll have a good season.

Thanks.....the 3 blocked are not usually counted, so a normal count would be 5, which is around what I was thinking.

Again, I don't think he's playing badly, only that I think we need someone a bit more clinical in front of goal.

I agree, Deeney/Gray is the only way to get the best out of both of them. If one gets injured, then it falls apart a little. Gray can't play as a lone striker. Deeney can, but needs players around him who will feed off his good hold up play.

I'm reasonably optimistic that we will change the way we play this season depending on circumstances. Okaka can lumber on and play in a 2 (for about 30 mins at least) and Success has looked well suited in his cameos too if we stick with that formation. Gracia played Deulofeu through the middle too once so could see him playing off Deeney.

We've got better strength in depth out wide now, with Deulofeu, Sema, Pereyra, Hughes, Femenia, Success, maybe even Peñaranda able to play the advanced wide roles off a lone striker. We have a nice mix of guile, skill, pace and power. Up to Gracia to decide how to use it. I think he's far more pragmatic than Silva and would expect him to mix it up if we hit a sticky patch, rather than carrying on the same way, hoping things would turn around.

Finally, worth remembering that our best patch of form at the start of the season had Gray as a lone striker. I agree he's not best suited to it, but it didn't stop the team performing well at the start of last season...

So which 3 players do you drop after 4 wins in 5 ?

Gray up front on his own is true, but we were doing well more because of Richarlison's form out wide until around November, then because of Gray.

I'm very happy with the squad though, and the way they are performing to the maximum of their abilities, but that doesn't mean we do not need a little more quality up front or even in central defence.

Okaka may be great under Gracia's tutelage, however, I can only go on what I've seen of him. Lumbering on, is a good description, but he's not really a solution. We have no back up for Gray either. Personally I would like Gray to be the back up to someone that has similar attributes but who is just a little more assured in front of goal.

I'm only being brutally honest, rather than having a go at any particular player.

Hughes is rarely stuck out on the wing though. He's given license to do what he likes in terms of drifting inside, letting Janmaat overlap

I think it suits him down to the ground. Part of the problem last season is he went missing through the middle. At right mid he's constantly involved in the game

Now let's not go down the route of Gray is the best a club like Watford can sign. Who would have thought the likes of Chalobah and Deulofeu would have signed for us? Callum Wilson, or someone of that ilk would be superb for us. He's only at Bournemouth, so there's no reason we cannot sign this type of player.

I do understand it's tough for a club like Watford. We can only really sign a youngster that hasn't made his name, or maybe a journeyman that has pedigree but has dropped out of the top 6 or on the fringes of a top European club. But Watford are well equipped to do unusual business, getting players you wouldn't ordinarily think we could possibly sign.

I'm hoping something like that is in the pipeline. Deeney, Gray and Okaka......let's be honest, it's not really enough for a long hard season.

I'm not saying we should drop players particularly, but a defeat does open the door to those on the sidelines. Sometimes a little tweak can freshen things up.

Right now, I would consider Kiko for Janmaat, and maybe Chalobah for Capoue. As soon as Deulofeu is fit he comes straight into the first team too.

So drop Janmaat, Capoue and...who else Gray ?
Any changes to the 11 right now would be madness but we need decent subs, which we now have.
I think much more needs to be seen of Chalo before we trust him to start.

We've played Spurs and Man U last 2 games. I'm sure our strikers will continue to score against mid table and lower table opposition as long as Pereyra Hughes and Doucoure continue to play well and play them in.

I didn't mean we would be able to sign him, but a player like him. Someone of his abilities. Bournemouth would never sell, so that would be a pointless approach. What I'm saying is if Bournemouth can sign a player like that, then it shouldn't be beyond us to be able to find someone like that also.

We have found that difficult though to be fair. Ighalo and Vydra are the only standout performers from a long list of strikers. It's not easy, but it's something will need to happen before we can be a genuine top half club, imo.
