Funny start - I think we all know we could so much more with a couple of extra players - but it is still our third best every start to a top flight campaign...

I think you kind of missed the point of the post Mr. Moog. No doubt deliberately.

Maybe you'd like to suggest what we, as fans, should do to improve team performance because yours and Nath's big team mindset isn't going to change things. Though perhaps you could write a strongly worded letter to Gino.

In fairness I only saw the extended highlights on sky, but I would say (maybe it wasn’t the case yesterday) that when a team sits back and makes it hard to attack, the sections where the team are playing it around and waiting for that little gap to appear won’t have players bombing around the pitch at 100 miles an hour. Watch the big teams,it’s the same thing, just when they explode into life there’s more quality.

Our moments where we attempt to break teams down have been pretty damn good this season. But when we don’t score or it doesn’t work it can be frustrating.

Thanks once more for this David. I guess the problem some people have is the general one in life of ‘what if’.

If we had that goal scoring striker and that commanding / dependable CB where might we sit?

But then if we hadn’t of got Javi in as Head Coach and hadn’t ‘discovered’ Doucoure and worked well with agents to pick up the likes of Deleufeo and Pereyra then where would we be?

    It’s swings and frustrating roundabouts!

If you take a step back and look at us as a club right now, I’d argue we’re being entertained more than in most seasons and we’re currently the 3rd best non elite club in the country!

Well -3rd best performing Watford team (so far) - there is a difference!

I agree with your point about "what ifs" though. We haven't a clue what might have happened if a multitude of things did happen, and a multitude of other things didn't happen. Heck. with our best team we might have lost yesterday! But for sure I love that we are entertaining (plus getting results)- some of the stuff under Mazzari was so dull I struggled to watch.

The highlights video is up on the official website now.
    https://www.watfordfc.com/matches/highlights/highlights-watford-1-1-newcastle-united

The penalty incident I was referring to was the foul on Pererya. It's shown in these highlights. I'm surprised there was not more made of it. Certainly the fans were animated at the time, but it got totally forgotten about after the match.

Also, I'd like to point out the lack of movement from Success when a cross comes in. He's very static, and really needs to work on his positioning and being in a position to attack the ball. He rarely makes a token attempt to even jump for the ball. This is shown a several occasions when we cross into the box. He's far too easy to mark and is no threat to the opposition at all. He's only young, but he needs to improve this aspect of his play.

Also, when Deulofeu broke clear for the shot he had which the keeper saved with his foot. He made no attempt to support Deulofeu. He just made a gentle jog. Deulofeu looked up to see if there was any support for him to square the ball to, and as Success had not done enough to make up the yards to support him, he had little choice but to shoot.

Success did some good things, like the run and powerful shot he had. He really needs to do this more often. However, he needs to up his game and become more of a nuisance than he was on Saturday. He spend a lot of time on the floor and he really needs to toughen up. The referee will get tired of it, and will not give him the benefit of the doubt if he sees him down for every little infringement.

Not really, too soon to say. He scored 3 in 6 games up to the 0-4 loss to Bournemouth so potentially 18 goals a season, maybe 12 with a slump. He was made a scapegoat and dropped not Deeney though who also played as a striker in the same match. He is not much good as an impact sub unfortunately as he isn't world class that can take the first chance presented to him so needs to start to keep the goalscoring stats up. The reason I like him for our present team is that he is the one player who can be relied on to be looking for service in the box. Yes he can miscontrol a ball at times but its not like we got 10 outfield David Silva's on the pitch anyway is it. Delofeu is better off wide right, Deeney and Success wander about everywhere particularly outside the box picking up the ball. Deeney and Success are too similar I would only play 1 of them alongside Gray. I would say he has been unlucky in his Watford career so far. He was scoring last season under Silva but was dropped, same under Gracia. They both love Deeney too much as he is the Captain I suppose. Personally the Gray/ Deeney partnership was doing ok, just because of one game there was no reason to get rid of it permanently.

Just my opinion. The 'Gray haters' of course wont agree.

I didn't think it was at the time, and still don't think it is having seen it again but it's much more of a penalty than either one of Salah's recent efforts. Yedlin has hold of Pereyra's arm for longer than the Newcastle bloke did to Salah.

Gray does have good attributes. He's quick, he can stretch the opposition defence and works hard. But he's not a good finisher in any shape or form. He does not have the technical quality to be efficient in the Premier League. I think he must have had at least ten 1 v 1 situations in his Watford career and he's missed the lot. What of those swing his leg and missing the ball occasions? He's done the several times and his 50 pence head where the ball goes in strange directions but never near the goal.

He does take up good scoring positions, but does not have the ability to take them. He's a squad option, but no more than that. He should not be the player we all pin our hopes on, IMO.

Exactly. It's the point I've made several times. Had that been Salah, Hazard or a player of that ilk, it would have been a penalty. Even the Deulofeu chance in the first half was a potential foul, where he stabbed it wide could have been a penalty, had it been City, Liverpool or United.

Those Liverpool penalties were a joke. Again, it's Michael Oliver who always plays the occasion. He's a dreadful referee and just cannot be trusted.

Absolutely spot on. Gray and Deeney aren't great, but they have been the most effective partnership of the season. Balls bounce off Isaac the trampoline and it is unlucky, ball bounces off Gray the trampoline and he's crap. It's popular to slag him off. The difference is that Gray will go looking for chances, he will look for Deeney flick ons and he isn't afraid to have a go. It seems far more fashionable to try and be fancy and not get a shot away rather than get a shot away and miss most of them.

As soon as Gray is back fit I'd be starting him and Deeney.

I agree with you, have we seen success and Gray together yet? Maybe with both players first touch being what it is, maybe it would look like magnificent one touch football between the two.

Whilst I kinda understand the point you’re trying to make, the team will ultimately suffer in the long term if as fans, we run out on the pitch with the likes of Deulofeu, Pereyra and Dourcoure, yet think we should be greatful for drawing against a team that is inferior to ours and has a poor recent record against us.

It’s not comparable to Cardiff or Huddersfield at all because they start every game as underdogs. We don’t, so there’s nothing to be gained by pretending as much. Next season is very likely to be our 5th consecutive in the PL - I’d much rather be demanding of our players to continue to be better as fans. That’s how they will get better or be replaced with superior players. Five seasons in, is not the time to start with a false small-time mentality.

Genuinely think Deeney always plays better with a partner regardless of who it is.

That being said, Gray is a better option for that role because Success naturally tries to do the same things Deeney does. Whereas Gray sits on the periphery, and tries to play on the shoulder of the defender once Deeney has done his bit.

IMO, if we are looking to buy a new striker, we need a much better partner for Deeney as I really can’t see him being jettisoned. In an ideal world, we find a player with the characteristics of Mitrovic who plays alone up top. The squad we have is far more suited to 2 wide attackers and a central striker than it is for 4-4-2. And we shake Deeneys hand in the summer and let him go - I really don’t see him ever doing a captains job (organising and constantly motivating) on the pitch anymore, beyond the odd case of him charging down a defender and then roaring towards the Rookery. I see through that tactic now.

Could easy end up like Swansea, they won a league cup had most seasons as I remember not fighting relegation then sell there best players and end up fighting relegation for a couple seasons before dropping.

I can’t see us having an issue selling on players as our club has replacements lined up. Whether or not they end up being as good is to be found out, but also we should remember who and where we’ve come from. I like to be positive and look up but survival should always be our priority then push on from there.

Unfortunately, the bias of "I've seen them given" type decisions will not disappear with VAR. People will review Salah taking a tumble from minimal contact and conclude that it's a definite penalty, but that it's a dive for a lesser player.

Benefit of the doubt will always favour the big teams/players.

We can eradicate obvious black and white decisions, but if a review panel saw the Capoue tackle as a red, can you convince me they'd have said the same if it were Kante or De Bruyne in the dock? I doubt it.

It's hard to try and make a case that he's a really good footballer, but what you say here is correct, he's our one player that regularly gets into goal scoring positions, attacks the posts, looks for the scraps etc. The type of player we need on the end of some of the stuff we play. Ideally we'd sign a better version, but until then I'd give him another go.

I agree, bias will still override everything, but clear injustices, which we are victim of far too often, will be eradicated. However effective VAR turns out to be, it will almost certainly be beneficial to clubs like Watford more than any other team.
