Everton’s problem is they keep changing managers
    No stability.
They need to stick with Silva
4 managers in 3 years and in that period they have had 2 directors of football. Disgusting

If they get rid of Silva they’ll end up with someone worse and he’ll no doubt do better at his new club

    I actually agree

In the last 6 years we have had Moyes, Martinez, Unsworth, Koeman, Unsworth (again), Allardyce and Silva

We are averaging more than a manager every year

Whether or not Silva actually deserves more time is almost immaterial because of the situation we find ourselves in - we absolutely have to back a manager and let it play out. The only way this should change is if we get into a situation like we found ourselves in with Koeman and we end up in the bottom three.

I’l say one thing for Everton I think they play better football than our last two home opponents - Newcastle and Burnley. Hopefully this will be a much better game.

In addition to this, the major mitigating factor in Silva's favour is the recruitment side of things. The previous regime has left us with an utter mess and has meant we are very restricted on what we can do as far as bringing players in goes.

Cuco Martina - £30k p/w (Joining Feyenoord on a permanent deal in the summer)
Ashley Williams - £65k p/w (out of contract in the summer)
Phil Jagielka - £60k p/w (out of contract in the summer)
Leighton Baines - £70k p/w (out of contract in the summer)
    Mo Besic - £40k p/w
    Morgan Schneiderlin - £120k p/w
    James McCarthy - £50k p/w
    Kevin Mirallas - £70k p/w
    Yannick Bolasie - £80k p/w
    Theo Walcott - £125k p/w
    Sandro Ramirez - £120k p/w
    Oumar Niasse - £50k p/w
    Cenk Tosun - £110k p/w

That's a million pounds per week that we are paying players who are either nowhere near the team or who we know aren't good enough but we are having to play because we can't replace them - and it's incredibly hard to get rid of them because they're crap and very overpaid, which isn't a great combination when you're trying to persuade someone to buy them.

Another typical piece of Silva nonsense after last night's home humbling, with yet more goals leaked from set pieces.

"I don't want to talk more about this set-piece situation. Everything I will tell our players they already know because everyone is so negative - and I understand why you ask this question - and it is something in the mind of our players. "

OK. So even though their defending of set pieces is the comical laughing stock of the premiership, even though they're conceding from them game after game, even though opposition forwards are gleefully gobbling up free headers from three yards out without a defender within six feet of them in all directions, Marco would prefer not to talk about it.

Understandable I suppose. I would also be reluctant to discuss how my calamitous failings at defensive coaching were being shown up week after week, either. Let's change the subject. Talk about something else. How on earth does he get away with it? It's brazen really isn't it? I mean he's the head coach.

He's like an airline pilot who crashes his plane on two out of three flights and then says "Well, I can understand why you're asking the question, but I don't want to talk about this aviation situation....". Well I'm sure you don't Marco, but you are being paid more than handsomely and I'm sure the club's supporters, officials and staff would feel there's something of an obligation on your part, wouldn't you say?

Sssilva then Sssslithers on to exsssssplain how he'ssss going to Sssssort things out and Ssssstop the Ssssslide down the table.

And his way of doing that, will be by way of telling his players some things they already know. Brilliant! Oh yes, that'll help no end. That'll really stop the rot. Once they've heard that stuff they already know, they're sure to sort out their defending.

Another positive of telling the players this stuff they already know, is that it will cure the negativity that "everyone" at Everton is feeling. That's quite a confession when you personally are supposed to be in charge of morale, motivation and team spirit. Still, I'm sure he knows what he's doing. Once he's had 'em in and had a quick run through of what they already know, those toffee frowns are sure to be turned upside down!

Dear God, I'm actually starting to feel sorry for you (well perhaps that's an exaggeration). It's an eye-watering sum of money. A lot of formerly very good players who are simply over the hill. & it doesn't cover the good players, either. The 'previous regime' couldn't have done much more if they were actually trying to screw the club. Mind you, if Moshiri is as abrasive and arrogant as he comes across, perhaps they were.
Watford supporters who harp on about new CBs and strikers should take note of difficulties like these.

He's at Inter Milan, was on loan to Hull. We are regularly linked with him. He played really well at Hull along with 2 of the best young defenders in Europe (robertson & maguire) but the snake still got them relegated!!

But come on Everton still bought Richarlison Digne, and Mina for about 75m to 95m this season. I know Everton are a ‘big club’ but still that kind of 9f investment is not exactly “very restricted” as you claim. I think you’re being too nice on Silva.

Well, that's fair comment, but essentially the main point is that he's got a very unbalanced squad which isn't really his fault. We still don't have a striker worth mentioning, for example. He, and the club, have been very open about January and the summer being difficult to do business without trimming the squad first, which isn't easy. So although we might throw money around a bit, we are v limited to what we can do currently. The bits of business we did in the summer were the last of the big money moves we can make until some of the aforementioned crap is moved on. Unfortunately the best we can probably hope for in most cases is that someone is stupid enough to take them on loan, because finding a buyer is going to be almost impossible for the likes of Sandro, Schneiderlin and Bolasie

What I'm really saying here is that the one thing I am adamant I won't blame Silva for is the dross that he has to work with. That's not his fault at all.

Defending set pieces, predictable tactics, etc are all his domain though and he's lucky he's not under far more pressure than he is.

Silva's main defensive problem is zonal marking. Its awful and very easy to play against. We adopted it when he came in and dropped it soon after.

Strikers of aposing teams have more space especially from corners. It works if you have world class defenders who can work such a system, but most clubs play s high line or a pressure defensive.

You know more than me I’m sure.

But I’d say your first choice XI has,
    Digne,
    Zouma,
    Mina,
    Andre Gomes,
    Richarlison
All in it? New contract for Pickford suggests the club don’t think he’s dross? Keane some have said had improved on last year at least? Bernard was signed under Silva? I think a lot of Everton fans rate Coleman? The club obviously rate Guaye to turn PSG away? Sigurdsson?

That’s a lot of players he’s either signed or it seems the club rate. So the output on the pitch is not good enough surely? All those players hanging around on big wages means you can’t strengthen further I agree but there’s the makeup of a good side there regardless. There’s dross on the sidelines perhaps but not on the pitch and there’s where Silva earns his crust. Sadly he’s just a manager who demands the chequebook to open and new players to come in when his shortcomings are highlighted.

I agree you need a striker but that was clear ever since Lukaku left and should have been the target ever since. Silva would have know the finances in the summer and would have known the targeted positions. If ‘striker’ wasn’t on the list, he’s as culpable as anyone. He should have said ‘we can get by with Baines and Coleman’ for another year - spend that £28m or whatever on a striker please’

I don't have any problem with the concept of Zonal marking. It's done by plenty of sides. Man City, for example.

The way Silva appears to have implemented it is horrific though
