Do the plastic sheet displays contribute to a better atmosphere?

Why are our players defending Zaha? Now Kabasele has come out saying what a class thing he did by admitting the first dive, when challenged by Kabasele, was not enough for a penalty. Can he not see Zaha was trying to con him and the referee by going down in the first place. Trying to get a penalty under false pretences. Are our players really that thick that by him admitting it wasn't a penalty makes it all ok? Does he believe that had the referee given a penalty, Zaha would have pleaded to have the decision reversed?

I just don't get it. Kabasele has to wise up and realise Zaha was trying to mug him off, then when he didn't get the decision, he was gracious to him, just to make him feel good about the incident. It's a very old trick.

Yeah, but not all the team are English.

It’s important to keep the old stuff relevant.

We appear to be straying from the original meaning.

Does Zaha have a reputation for vaginal belching?

Why didn’t Harry the Hornet pick up on this in his post match horse play?

    Interesting.

Bailey’s Irish Cream liqueur were always hesitant about introducing a premium variant.

The argument being that if the new is better, why should I buy the old one.

They eventually agreed to test out a more upmarket version on the proviso that had separate branding.

Oddly, this new one was called Penny Royal.

Almost immediately it was pointed out that pennyroyal was a herbal extract used to encourage abortions.

Support for Penny Royal was thereafter limited & indeed the brand was withdrawn a few months later.

Our first venture into the cream liqueur archives since the time of Walter.

  7. For me to be proud of something, I feel I should have had some sort of contribution to it. I am proud of my children and their achievements because I have had a hand in guiding them. I am proud of starting a successful business. I am sort of proud of my admittedly fairly moderate musicianship, because I've worked hard at it.
Why should anyone be proud of an accident of birth? It strikes me that the most vociferously 'patriotic' people in this country are amongst those who have done least to make it a better place. Those who shout loudest about English culture will not have read a book, let alone Shakespeare, Milton, Byron, or listened to anything by Elgar or Britten.

Two world wars and one world cup? Just **** off.

So in short -yes, I am having a go at patriotism. Which, as Boswell informs us, Dr Johnson denounced as the last refuge of the scoundrel.

Curious he pronounces it ‘jag-war’ in the American way.

This may spoil my enjoyment of the Cup Final, worrying how a single county could hope to complete with two separate counties.

Bravo, GOBE, but are you proud of WFC?

  11. It's the team I support. I invest myself into it quite irrationally, but I know it's all a bit daft really. Still, it gives a bit of artificial meaning to my existence.

    Exactly.

I deduce that you are proud of WFC - as I am - but, as per your wise guideline, what have we done to contribute the their success?

I’ve cheered Scullion but I doubt he heard me above the general hubbub.

Supporting a football team as an intelligent adult is a strange pursuit.

Maybe a Favourite Existentialist Philosopher thread for the close season.

It’s because we have already signed him for next season so our players are just giving him a warm welcome to much bigger club than Zaha FC.

A country is just a huge community really. I don't see why people can't be proud of being a small unit of that. Contributing in whatever small way they do whether it be tax, community work or just generally being a nice all round person which makes the country a nice place to live.

Are you really that embarrassed of your own country's flag? I agree some unsavoury types use the flag for their own agenda, but it seems an over-reaction to me. I imagine you'll be doing a lot of tutting when you see all the flags out during the World Cup.

Poppy display ok? What if you dont agree with war.
GT tribute? What if you never met him or supported the club when he was here.
Come on chaps the St George is our nation's flag and the 1881 did it for St George's day not to try and be all English bulldog on tour.

Or they know some of our own players would probably do the same - well Richarlison anyway.

I do think players would be more annoyed by a bad tackle/elbow/spit than somebody trying to con the ref by diving.

The displays are for the fans, not the players. They add to our identity and how we are perceived.

The fact that only a few of our players are English totally misses the point of what the 1881 is actually trying to achieve.

    Well done to all involved.....again!

I just don't go in for any form of patriotic or nationalist celebration based purely on where someone is lucky enough to have been born and I don't think a Premiership match is the place for it either. It wasn't an England match so there was no need to celebrate being English, particularly because very few people really care about and actively celebrate St. George's day anyway.

As for the flags coming out during the World Cup, I have no problem with that, although I might roll my eyeballs at those who plaster their whole houses with them! The embarrassment might come when we get knocked out in an Iceland-type scenario if we get through the group stages!

Forgot to say, Palace really are a one man team. Take Zaha out of the equation and they look toothless.

The team play well for a change so people on the forum go after the 1881 for a foil display instead of the players.

    Well played forum. Well played.

I agree that the displays would be better of being WFC related only. I didn't really see the point of the st georges flag. At an england game, yes, but why not celebrate something to do with our glorious club? A massive collage of a gurning goblin for example. Seemed like a missed opportunity and a complete waste of time to me.

However, it's close to the bottom of the pile of things I could give a **** about.

My sources close to the club inform me that Zaha is coming to us in the summer, that’s why the players were defending him

I've just watched Goals on Sunday. An interesting show as it had Zaha on it. Talk about always the victim. He just portrays himself as always being on the receiving end of everything.

They talked about the two penalty incidents and the challenge on Karnezis. Sheppard and Kamara interviewed him, and they suggested he could have been sent off. They are always kind to their guests, so it's pretty obvious they both thought it was a red card challenge. Of course he defended what he did by saying he was just going for the ball. I actually believe that but you have to know when to pull out of a challenge. You never go in that hard on a keeper. All the Watford players responded instantly to it, and Kamara said, when players respond like that you know something has happened.

Zaha went on to say about the players appealing that they wanted to get him sent off. He also directly criticised Karnezis for playacting.

They asked what did the referee say to him afterwards, and Zaha said he just told him he's not going to be influenced by the crowd and that he's not going to be sent off or even booked. He then said "cheers" with a big smile knowing he'd got away with one.

The second penalty/dive, wouldn't have happened had he been sent off, like he should have. Mapps did touch him, there's no doubt about that, however, I also believe he could have rode the challenge if he wanted to. He's always looking to go down when touched, although he is very robust against challenges outside of the box. This is why he's a cheat IMO.

They even mentioned about Mapps saying he thought it was a penalty, and he said to that, it good to hear him say that but it's not a lot of good after the game. He should have said something to the referee at the time, as it doesn't mean too much now.

On another note, it's clear Joel Ward should also have been sent off. He was on a yellow, when he made another cynical challenge on Richarlison. They should have been down to 9 men, but everyone seems to be focusing on how hard done Zaha was by not getting a penalty, when he shouldn't have even been on the pitch to get in the first place!!

I wonder if Gray scores in training? Is he against Gomes or the Greek God - or the plastic stand up football figures they use to simulate defenders during free kicks?

I've seen evidence that he blasts the ball over the bar from 6 feet even in training.
