The only reason why we’re no longer conceding goals is because of the ridiculous formation we are using. 5 defenders, 2 DMF in winnable home matches. There is no balance to it. It’s for a purpose to get a 0-0 result, which is going to be the most likely outcome.

It’s hope, rather than expectation, that we pinch a goal and win 1-0.

The problem is still the defence, 100%, and we’re having to make huge sacrifices to our attacking play to compensate for it.

Disagree. Our attacking players are powderpuff, that is the problem. GD yesterday was yet again totally wasteful and a complete waste of a shirt. Welbeck is made of glass, RP couldn't give a to5s, GD is all fart no poo, Gray is a waste of a shirt unless played in a two.

When Deeney the goals will come. Not from him scoring them, but because he will do the ugly bits GD and RP are too cowardly to do.

We definitely don't play with 2 defensive midfielders but agree with the rest.

If we could get a midfield of Pereyra, Capoue and Doucoure on the pitch and release the wing backs a bit more then we may have a bit more joy. Several times yesterday Masina or Janmaat broke forward, laid it off and then stopped their run and held back. It's definitely an instruction from Quique.

There’s an interview in the athletic with the very same Albert McLenaghan, who coincidentally played a total of two games for us and has no recollection of the infamous throw in!

  6. Players, injuries, form, weather, skill, referees etc are as you say variables. Which makes the calculation of the chance of an outcome difficult. If it weren't we'd all win the pools a lot more often.

Pretty much any chances or half chances we get are due to GD. But he’s not a natural goal scorer. The work he did in the box to give himself the one on one which the GK saved was excellent.

Very true. A point a game keeps you up. Start of the season we were getting walloped and getting nothing. Now we are 10 games 5 points so it is getting better and the average points is going up. We will lose to Chelsea and win at Norwich.

If you can't win, don't lose seems to be the current mantra. QSF is good but he isn't a miracle worker. Picking up draws and being defensively sound is a huge step up in 6 games. Next step is to try and get our forwards to do something of use rather than something that looks exciting and comes to nothing.

This is why I’ve been critical of Flores. I can see his formation being decent in the majority of away games and even in some difficult home ties. But we shouldn’t play it in every winnable home game. It just reduces our chances of winning.

Let’s be honest, we have to win at least 10 matches to stay up. We’re not going to achieve that playing this formation.

Well apart from Gray we have no natural striker fit which doesn't help..

GD and Pereyra would be better out wide ready to break and cross for someone in the area ..if there was anyone !!

I was under the impression it was 3-5-2 We were playing, certainly looked like yesterday.

I would also say that our attack is a bigger issue than the defence. 5 goals in 10 games over 2 managers speaks volumes about the state of our strike force.

One of the bottom four has their three experienced central defenders out almost all season through injury, and also through injury gave Prem debuts to two keepers in the same match. They've beaten Man City this season, whereas.....

I reckon Norwich are a lot more likely to bounce up the table than Watford.

The year is 2029, Troy Deeney is 41 years old, 22 stone and hasn't scored a Premier League goal for almost a decade...

Meanwhile, Watford fans are still insistent that he is the man to save us from our latest slump because he was good in the Championship 15 years prior, is "Watford through and through" and "will give anyone a tough game"...

That’s amazing. For those around at the time, the throw-in is the only reason he’s remembered at all. A bit like P.Issa falling off the stretcher.

It's very quiet on here today. Was much busier after Sheff. Utd. Are we all becoming inured to mediocrity?

This “we have to win 10 matches” stuff is just not really true. Even if we set survival at 38 points (quite high over recent seasons), we need 33 points from 28 games. 8-9-11 will do that...that’s why QSF is setting us up not to lose first & foremost. 7-12-9 will also do it....whilst I accept the 7 will be difficult until we remember how to pass when attacking on the break, this mythical 10 wins is a canard...as long as we keep not losing.
It’ll be excruciatingly boring & nerve-wracking, but that’s what 2 years of misguided recruitment & not realising that Garcia had lost correct focus results in.

I think it’s just a quiet acceptance of our dire situation. I can’t get worked up about it the recruitment failures anymore. It is what it is.

Most depressing is that I suspect the Sarr transfer leaves little left in the pot for January fixes.

But QSF is stuck with what he’s got. At least have a one or a nil for the opposition gives a chance. It’s horrible to watch but not sure what else he can do. I still think 4-2-3-1 is the best formation for us to play.

But does it reduce our chances of winning ? We were unable to score before we played the defensive formation and we still are no less able to score .. but at least we’re not conceding a hatful of goals now .. so doesn’t that make us more likely to win ? If even only marginally

    6) Hard done by Hornets to get that elusive first win

Despite being without a win in their past three games, Bournemouth are likely to be full of confidence as they travel to Vicarage Road to take on a Watford team already on their second manager of the season and winless at the bottom of the table. Or are they? Against Tottenham last weekend, Watford were vastly superior in almost every department apart from the scoreboard and had every right to feel extremely aggrieved at being denied all three points by the reluctance of officialdom to implement VAR as they should. Rather than stew on the comical injustice of it all, Quique Sánchez Flores is likely to have spent the week instructing his players to dwell on the positives of an excellent performance. A repeat at home ought to be enough to see them past their visitors. BG

Talking of Troy, that was a very suspiciously long-lasting 'cup of tea' they showed him grasping up in the stand at various points during the game yesterday.

What do you reckon was really in there? Vodka? Double caramel fudge frappucino with mars bar sprinkles?

It's a fine line Jumbo. Gambling possibly in the last chance saloon. Spend big to preserve our status. One of three scenarios. It doesn't work and we do down and are saddled with certain players who won't want to be in the second tier. Or it works but we need to sell more in the summer. Plus all the other clubs in the same saloon will also be spending. Or preserve the status quo and hope for the best. If it works brilliant. If it doesn't major changes in the playing staff to raise money and with the parachute payments build a competitive Championship team to try and return at the first attempt.

Something which is rather difficult to do .

We have chosen our anti-relegatiin strategy. Stop conceding, be hard to beat, try to nick a goal. It's the safest bet really. We do still create chances and should pick up a couple of wins in the not too distant future. The Pozzo have a lot of experience of relegation fights with Udinese and Granada. We do have a plan and we do seem to be turning the ship round. The worrying thing is how the other teams are performing apart from Norwich. What we really need is for one or more of our players to step up and drag us over the line in games. We need a hero. In a relegation scrap the Deeney Gray combo could be the one that works.

Yes. Deeney/Gray is the last remaining hope now. Thinking perhaps we will get folk hero Ighalo back in Jan on loan, he starts firing them in & a 2020 fairy tale is born.

    Pass us that spliff back.
