Watford boss Adrian Boothroyd admits they'll be taking financial risks during the January market.

They have been linked with a loan move for Manchester United forward Alan Smith, bids for Leeds striker David Healy, West Ham's Carlton Cole and Luton winger Carlos Edwards, and Boothroyd knows his board must take chances in the transfer market.

"We know we have to invest," Boothroyd said. "Sometimes that takes risks - calculated risks - and that is what we need to do.

"We have to do whatever it takes. I have already been busy, preparing for January.

"I have been on the phone, making contact with a few managers, and now is the time to start putting in bids.

"I want to bring in players as quickly as possible.

"Depth is key in the Premiership. In the Championship, if you lose a star player, the player coming in can give his effort and do all he can.

"He might not have the edge the star player has, but you can get by.

"In the Premiership, if you lose a key player, it is vital, as the absence of John Terry at Chelsea has shown."

Atleast we are going to sign someone :)

Is it really worth spending millions as some fans demand when we are probably down anyway?

Rather be safe than sorry like under the Villa era and end up in a Bradford,Ipswich or Leciester situation.

We should have spent more in the summer if the players were free to come ofcourse but now I feel its too late.

I don't think Aidy is going to ruin us, but I am eager to find out what we are going to end up with come Jan 31st.

I reckon we'll end up with either hoskins, porter, or sharp.

i think if we get a few players in were probably not down the gap of points really isnt tht much and a few new players even if they do cos more that will turn our great performances into points on the board then we'll stay up and the risk will be worth it

Good, if we spend a bit this season and somehow manage to stay up then it's a win win situation.
As from next season it's the new TV deal so relegated sides get a shedload of money especially the team finishing bottom. Or we'd be a step towards becoming a premiership side.
