Palace fans think VAR is great..

No great surprise - Atkinson was the tef who recused them via it at Arsenal .

  2. But refs may have taken more action on those decisions if they knew there was no VAR panel to review the incidents I guess.

That’s an interesting supposition. It’s possible but we can never know if it’s true.

For clarity here is the VAR list For and Against where VAR was incorrectly applied:-

    Against
Handball by Murray at home to Brighton. Losing 0-1 at the time and a penalty should have been awarded. We were on the ascendancy at that point. Could have been a game changing decision (even season defining!!).
Penalty against Everton should have been awarded after a clear foul on Deulofeu. Probably cost us a point. -1 point
Handball goal scored by Newcastle. We were leading 1-0 at the time. Cost us a win. -2 points
Handball goal scored by Spurs when we were leading 1-0. No penalty given for a clear foul on Deulofeu, again when we were leading 1-0. A win definitely denied. -2 points.
Handball goal scored by Southampton, again when we were leading 1-0. Because it was so late in the game, it changed the momentum of the match completely. -3 points.
Soft penalty given against Leicester with the score at 0-0. Changed the game.
Cahill's headlock on Deeney. 90th minute with the score at 0-0. A last minute penalty, if converted, would have won us the game. -2 points

    For
The penalty we got against Chelsea, but it turned out to be a consolation and we didn't gain anything from it.
Leicester should have been awarded a penalty after Mariappa's contact with Vardy, however, Vardy did dive after the event to exaggerate the fall. This was balanced out later in the match though by the referee's soft penalty award (see above)

Total points lost through incorrect VAR interpretations. 10 points. Had VAR been used correctly, we probably would be on 19 points right now. With all the problems we've had this season, by far the biggest issue has been bad VAR decisions.

I think the only time VAR has been correctly applied, was to overturn a decision against Burnley at home. Of course they see that one, and give Burnley a penalty which killed the game stone dead.

This is my take on it, you can agree or disagree. I don't think too many are contentious though, and I believe we've dropped a lot of points because of it. I think it's clear we have been badly treated this season by officials.

It appears to me that officials spot everything when it goes against us, but miss it when it could be to our advantage. The proof is there, but like I say, you can all make your own mind up as to whether my list is correct or I'm exaggerating, making it up, etc.

I'm with you all the way on this one.

However, it is not VAR in itself that is at fault it's the interpretation that has been put on it by the powers that be IMO. The VAR Refs should be instructed to stick to THE LETTER of the LAW when reviewing on field decisions and NOT to give their personal interpretation on them.

In the case of fact, like the three handballs, there is no argument. The VAR official has an easy job to overrule the referee. When it's a case of interpretation, then the VAR official has to advise the referee to look at the pitch-side screen. The fact the monitor has not been used even once with nearly half a season gone is farcical.

At the end of the day, we just want fairness across the board. I'm not asking for favours, but these constant stitch ups have to be eradicated, or else what's the point in VAR. It's not being used correctly, but has highlighted beyond any doubt that referees/linemen make plenty of mistakes and their colleagues will happily cover for them. That in itself is just dreadful, but it's something I've long thought was the case and at least, because of VAR, this has been proven beyond all credible doubt.

Just shows those who demanded VAR in the first place were wrong to presume it would clear up basic errors and makes things easier /more even !

Actually I think VAR has been very good in showing the inconsistencies with referees. As per per-season prediction, I said we'd be on the receiving end of many dubious calls, and this is exactly how it's playing out. This clearly shows, as much a you possibly can, that they is some type of bias, prejudice or however you'd like to label it, against Watford.

Every week on Ref Watch, the most controversial decsion of the weekend is usually something against Watford.

Tbf I thought it would work better but you are right to point out the inconsistent use of it and we seem to have been hit hardest .

  10. Us wishing for VAR to get fairer decisions is like the DUP wanting brexit to protect the Union. Unintended consequences...

I wonder if the VAR refs show up in full kit?

Or do they arrive in standard ref clothing, and then get changed into full kit?

Do they wear boots or trainers?

I've not heard it at the Vic yet, but several stadiums have had every single fan singing "F*** VAR" in a huge chant that rings out and drowns out
everything. I know the fan's wanted it for the better as well, and surely this is telling whoever runs it, how us - the little people - see it. I do not
personally condone a huge chorus of bad language being sung for an extent of time, but it's bizzare how united all fans are in the event.

You can look at a few clips (I won't post them here due to forum possible telling offs) on youtube to see how expressive some clubs have been.

Well a lot of people in the Rookery can see the screens so don't know what is going on at all !

Why was Rashford not sent off for kicking EC? It was more obvious than the Son incident.

Come on....you can't send off Rashford. That's crazy talk

It was a trip wasn't it? Didn't look like a red to me. Should have been a booking though.

Fans hate VAR for the same reason they throw abuse at referees during games. They'll love it if they get the decision and hate it if they don't.

As usual it's the people running the show, not the system. Tottenham vs Chelsea yesterday shows how good and powerful the system can be if used correctly.

Not sure you are thinking of the same incident as a free kick was not given. The kick was shortly before EC was subbed.

Not VAR but why was Cathcart booked for handball when Pogba was not? Not disputing the booking for CC, but Pogba gathered the ball and pulled it into his body, so even more obvious as a deliberate handball.

Not the same then. Rashford tripped Capoue as he was coming away from our box but a free kick was given.

Thought the ref was poor yesterday. Pogba took a dive in the box and gave away a free kick for deliberate handball and he was booked for neither incident.

It's not enough for it to be a deliberate handball to get a yellow anymore it seems.

I can't remember the Pogba one, but I guess Cathcart's falls under "commits a foul or handles the ball to interfere with or stop a promising attack".

Pogba's was when he chucked himself on the floor (second time) and scooped the ball with his hand to try and coerce the ref into giving him a free kick. Clear yellow card.

Yeah, it always was. Not since the handball law got completely revamped though:

    http://www.thefa.com/football-rules.../football-11-11/law-12---fouls-and-misconduct

If Pogba's not stopping a promising attack or trying to score a goal by handling the ball, it's not a yellow. Free kick only.

For the first time since its introduction I actually enjoyed seeing it's use in the Tottenham v Chelsea match. Yeah it still takes too long to make some calls, (the keeper kung fu and Sons violent kick were obvious to everyone really quickly), but they're either getting better at it or I'm getting more used to it.

I couldn't quite believe the ref needed VAR for those two decisions. To give the keeper a free kick initially for the kung-fu kick was laughable.

It was Anthony Taylor who is a pretty average ref.

Mind you even they checked our one as well - probably trying to find a way not to give it.

All penalty decisions are checked whether the ref gives it or not. All VAR is there for is to correct clear and obvious errors, our ref had no hesitation that it was a penalty but it still had to be checked, it was pretty quick.

I thought so too, I think the only thing was giving Capoue a yellow was harsh. I certainly didn't see any big team bias, unless Mason no longer considers Man U a big team!
