  2. Interesting Guidolin interview.

Suggests he might possibly become technical co-ordinator of our three clubs. Sherlock have I translated right?

Yes quite correct, and I agree, very interesting.
It was a press conference for his next 500th match as a manager in Serie A next saturday.
Question about the future: «Non lo so.
"I don't know. Time for thinking will come and some thoughts I have already. Doing something different in my world. I'd like to stay in Udine, working with Pozzo's family, even not as a manager. Maybe a role of technical co-ordinator of our three clubs: Udinese, Watford and Granada"

It must be noted that Guidolin "feels" a lot the pressure and oftentimes declared he'd like a less stressful position than manager.
The one he hints about could be simply great.
He's a very humble and gentle person so certainly he wouldn't "step over" the managers of the three clubs. But his great experience as a manager (and a good one in nursing the growth of young talents) could be invaluable.
I guess he might be the "connection" between the clubs and the scouting network. Knowing exactly what kind of player might be most useful to the clubs and should be searched for.

  6. He would have vision over what, 120-150 proffesional players and maybe the same in youth, plus scouting...? Wow. That would be a really interesting job, and I think unique in the whole of world football.

    Juventus-Udinese 4-0.
    Annoying and harsh result.
But Juve playied exactly as Udinese should have played: lot of pressing, two great goals from a young promising talent, clinical in counterattack.
We had a bad day in most of our players: too soft, too slow.
The two incredible goals by Pogba obviously didn't help but ... WTF! it's well known that he has a good shot and both times he was well free to use it, without one of our midfielders or defenders immediately pressing on him!
Unfortunately Di Natale couldn't play the 90' (illness during week) and he was missed. When he was in he was more incisive in his attempts than a disappointing Muriel was in the whole match.
The lad Muriel certainly has talent but must learn that he still has a lot to learn. In interviews he said he dreams one day to be in a great team and win Ballon d'Or: well, boy, before thinking to great teams and great dreams, you'd better learn for some more time from Di Natale what hard work and consistency applied to talent can obtain.

    3. First two direct. Third to preliminaries and Europa League if failed (like Udinese this year). Then 4th and 5th to Europa League. One place in EL also for winner of Italy cup (who usually is among the first 4-5 so last EL place in table should be 6th).

Oh ok,12 points off 3rd ,I think if Watford get promoted this season it will be the right timing for the Pozzos as it may make up the money they would get from the Champions League.

Another win for Udinese today, they beat bottom of the league Siena 1-0 at home. 3 points are 3 points but I thought they would win more comfortably than that. Was it a deserved win, Sherlock?

Congrats to our brothers. As you say, three points are three points and I'll happily take a 1-0 win Vs Brizzle on Tuesday.

Muriel got the goal for the Zebrette.

    Ugly match. Decently deserved win.
Clinical in scoring at the first good chance in FH, then Udinese was quite satisfied in controlling the match and aiming at possession in SH, with a couple of more chances but not showing much creativity.
Just solid defence, so Siena tried something but hadn't serious goal chances.
3 very useful points (that make 9 in last 4 matches, with the very bad day with Juventus in it), but really I hope to see a much better Udinese than this.
It must certainly be better in next match, Milan-Udinese, or we risk another shameful loss like last week against in form Milan.

Home record is looking good, Sherlock? I make that 9 unbeaten in the league. What do reckon your chances are of getting into a Europa league place?

At home we are very good (6W 4D 1L). We have the highest number of draws in serie A so it seems at least it's difficult to win against us.
IF we find some of the good playing we showed in last two years and wake up in second half of season with some more victories, there are certainly still chances for EL.
    Table is: http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/football/italian-serie-a/table.html
Last EL place is 5th but semifinalists in Italy cup are Roma, Inter Juventus and Lazio. If one of the last 3 wins then more likely 6th place gives EL qualification. And we're just 3 points short of 6th now so everything still possible.

I'll make my prediction, reckon you'll finish 5th. Whats the european qualification, top 6? Surely 6th place is achievable and a good season for you guys?

Next season will be 19 consecutive seasons in sere A, it would be really nice to add also the 11th participation to European cups.

Sherlock/Stefano/All Udinese fans - How did the news go down in Udine when Watford signed Forestieri on a 5 1/2 yr deal? How will Udinese fans react if we sign Vydra also?

  25. wfcthroughandthrough

    wfcthroughandthrough Squad Player

I can't answer for them, but surely it's great news for all concerned?

Vydra may have done well this year at Udinese, but he also may not have, and certainly wouldn't have got the playing time he's gotten here.

It's great for them, because when we inevitably sell at his peak for £20/25million, they'll probably pocket £10mill, while we split the rest with Granada. And vice cersa, IF someone like Murray was to go to Udinese (unlikely) fit the system, be amazing for 2 season and be sold for £20million, EVERYONE benefits.

The beauty of the pozzos is that they had 2 good clubs. With Watford in the premier league, and the money is brings, they could have 3 really excellent sides, making really fantastic profits.

If Vydra is worth £25m, then Murray is worth £200m. English, young and scores goals, and knows where the Walkabout is.

Obviously there are some (the most noisy on internet of course) that cry about wasting money on a stupid foreign team insted of buying players for Udinese.
The same mould that among WFC fans, in a few years (hopefully), will cry about money wasted on a stupid foreign team when Watford's TV rights money will fund the buying of some players that will be sent to Udinese.
So, nothing to worry about! ;)

Fair play Sherlock. I've read one or two comments on the Udinese boards that say Watford are "a parasite s*cking Udinese's blood" and such things.

Like most other Watford fans I think I can say that we're ecstatic at how things have worked out for us so far.

I very much hope that we'll be able to put our fair share into the Pozzo's pockets in the very near future. I suppose it's unrealistic to suppose that nobody here will complain when star players are sold in the future, but I will not be amongst them.

I will always picture the alternative universe where the Pozzo's chose Cardiff or someone instead of Watford and we were left with the crooked chancer Bas in charge and Garner playing on his own up front as our attacking 'threat' (shudder).

It's taken them 25 years to get to this point though. Patience isn't a virtue found in many football club owners.

Sherlock, weren't the Pozzo's huge Udinese supporters before they invested in the club? This tells me Udinese fans have nothing to worry about. Sometimes you have to divert your resources in order to expand your empire. This is exactly what the Pozzo's are doing.

Sure in the here and now, it looks like little Watford are the number one club, but that's a means to an end. Once Watford are in the Premier League, the funds will be rolling in. Ok, the £7.7m Bonds issue will need to be repaid, plus some other smaller but not insignificant debt. A nice new stand would need to be build plus other stadium works. This will probably be totalling around £20m for Watford debt and project costs. That still leaves a huge chunk to invest in up and coming young talent of which Udinese will hugely benefit.

It is clear there's a fluency between all three clubs. I welcome that and I will understand and tolerate when in the future it goes the other way. That's only fair. As long as Watford are progressing and are in a healthy state, then I do not have an issue with incoming Watford generated money going to help Udinese or Granada (as long as it doesn't break any rules of course).

Actually rumors says that the owner giampaolo is an udinese fan because he was born here in udine, but the son grew up in barcelona and rumors says that he is not a fan, just an owner of an industry, and doesn't care of udinese more than other family industries and watford and granada....hope rumors are not real. anyway for now is see them both every sunday at stadium, so at least they act like they care.... XD we will see when giampaolo will be too old.
About forestieri signed for watford i haven't seen any reaction actually, newspaper just reported the news and at stadium supporters said nothing, but i admit i never check on internet forums :p for vydra looking how good he is doing so far, i would be not happy if he doesn't come back, but i also know that in the next years the scouts will find 5 more vydra's for our clubs, as usual. I personally think he will stay one more year in watford if you get promoted to "show" him in premier league and at the end of next season udinese will sell him to a premier league team, or udinese will sell to watford to sell it to anotehr team, for sure he will not stay in watford i think....get used at it guys, this is how thigns work in udinese

Fortunately we're used to things being not too dissimilar, only the way things were before was far more frustrating. If we had a player who had scored 18 goals by this point in the season at Vydra's age, we'd have certainly sold him already (or at least we would be selling on transfer deadline day) for a few million. You only have to look back one year to see us sell our most promising talent in Marvin Sordell on deadline day to some premiership strugglers for a couple of million.

I'm more than happy to see a player like Vydra come to Watford, do extremely well for a couple of years, and then see him leave and play every week for a bigger team - it's much better than seeing a player come through WFC's ranks and sold before his time, to sit on the bench at a slightly bigger club than ours and stall his development.

Thinking about it, Gianpaolo Pozzo simply applied a very basic principle in economy: "Buy low, sell high, pay little mainteinance between buying and selling".

In football, to obtain this, the key was building a good scouting network, which he slowly did, apparently choosing the right persons.

His son Gino studied economics in USA. He's said to be the one who pushed for the Granada-Watford "project". He's simply applying another equally basic principle in economics: efficiency of production.

Udinese, thought as a "factory", now has a sector (the scouting network) that is almost "state of the art", it seems, but it's not cheap to mantain.
Last Udinese's budget, IIRC, showed 21M€ for scouting network and agents fees. So even knowing that players agents are vampires, it can be guessed that the scouts have a cost of about 10-15M€ per year.

To maximize efficiency: highest possible production and no wastes.
Both things are not possible with just one team.
    "There's only Udinese" scenario:
    1) highest possible production: a scout notices a brilliant unknown player. But, pity! Udinese's team is already full and already with dozens of players on loan in serie B, so no reason to buy yet another young talent who might not reach first team.
    2) wastes: a scout notices a very good winger. But Udinese has been playing 3-5-1-1 for some time now, so he would be useless in Guidolin's module. A pity, we noticed him first but another big team, playing 4-3-3 maybe, will catch him.

With three teams, playing in different style of game leagues and possibly with different modules, the money spent for the scouts can be fruitfully used without wastes, as possibly for any young talent discovered ther will be the right league, the right team, the right module and playing time to show what he can do.
Moreover, the not so small expenses for mantaining the scouting network will probably in future be shared among the three teams, relieving Udinese's budget.

Then, of course, the fact that the "experiment" worked very well with Granada and could be replicated in England with the much interesting thing of Premier TV rights is an extra bonus, as it would allow also to buy the good young players even if someone else is raising the bids, if we are convinced the player is worth the money. While with more limited financial resources we must usually be contented with the really cheap ones (in terms of cost, not of value!).

Sherlock, do the pozzo scouts get a % of future player sales that they have found? If so then the 21m seems to suggest that they are picking up plenty of good players that are eventually being sold on and actually represents success. It would also explain as to why the 'bigger' clubs in Europe can't steal the pozzo scouts. If the pozzo scouts know that one of their players is definitely going to be sold on in the future for profit, they will financially benefit.

    Or not...??
