I don't remember Troy saying anything positive about Walter, whereas he's usually come out with the standard 'learnt a lot, tactics-wise' kind of guff in the past. Watching Walter's -- and indeed Beppe's--interaction with the team during clips of training sessions reminds me of hearing an ex-pro commentator saying training at an Italian club is not fun, it's like being at school. Probably not our Troy's cup of tea.
Not sure who this reflects worse on, Troy, or Walt. Troy for his non endorsement, or Walt for making players feel that way?
Thus reminding of us the Tommy Docherty quote "Management is about keeping the five players who don't like you away from the six who are unsure".
TBF Troy hasn't tweeted much this season and so I wonder whether there is a policy in place to not talk about certain matters, if asked about Walter he could either ignore or say what he did say.
I'd say Troy. As captain he's meant to be a galvanising, impartial presence; especially when talking about his boss.
He's a club legend and has done so much for our club, but over the last two seasons you can see that him being 'Mr Watford' has gone to his head. As captain, he's got to lead by example in various ways and one of which is by respecting the managers decisions and putting the team before himself. I saw that interview too and you could tell he what he was getting at. For me he was insinuating that he isn't happy with the manager. As others say, in public you have to back him so if he's not doing that convincingly in front of the cameras, what has he been saying to his team mates? Hopefully nothing but it makes you wonder. He's starting to think he's bigger than the club, or at least it looks like that. Again, I hope I'm wrong!
Personally I'd let him go in the summer if we received a good offer. I think the notion of him being "Mr Watford" and our supposed talisman is actually doing more harm than good at this point and I feel like he's living off of that more than his performances/ability. If we want to progress I think we need a more mobile, active forward that's going to give the opposition more to worry about that just being "beaten up" all game. Been a great player and servant to the club but in my opinion it feels like it's all gone a little stale.
Part of the trouble is he is the only one in the squad who has any relationship with the media hence the regular interviews etc.. At other clubs who have a number who take on the media PR role...
Getting a bit sick of his "Honest Troy" shtick. He comes out with all these great soundbites after the game about how the performance wasn't up to scratch and he gets a load of publicity about what a great, honest leader he is, despite being a large part of the crap performance himself. How about leading by example on the pitch instead?
He's too big a personality to be our 7th or 8th best player, which is where he should rank once injuries to Pereyra and Zarate abate and we sign 2 or 3 upgraded 1st teamers in the summer. We've needed him up until now, but I feel that this summer is the right time for both parties, that he goes elsewhere and has a chance in a bigger pond. I will criticise him for his performances this season and for his ego, but his status as a Watford legend is secured and a stand or statue named after Troy should definitely be considered down the line. Another season of negative growth and rancid football to accommodate Troy's limited abilities, however, could sour the relationship
To be fair, I think a season of negative growth helps Troy as it counteracts the positive growth he always manages in the summer.
he is bigger than the club. He's gaining weight as I type. Troy's gut will soon spill into Bedfordshire!
Still of the belief it's not Deeney's fault. The signing of Okaka STILL makes no absolutely no sense, history shows a quick (ish) striker next to Deeney is the best combo so we sign a fat lumbering useless old reject? Sign a striker with pace, put him next to Deeney and he will score, end of.
Okaka is better than Deeney on a technical level, it's pretty obvious. Not sure how you're missing that.
You're telling me Deeney is a better footballer than Okaka? Ok. Just watch the warm up against Liverpool. Troy's shooting from outside the box is truly woeful for a Premier League player.
Building a post football media career http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p051g2sw He's good though. He also talks a hell of a lot of sense. However good he is or isn't as a footballer, he is a massive asset to the club.
Apart from a purple patch of goals that started at the end of January, Deeney has been really poor this season. Whether that's a fault of the systems we've been playing or him being found out at this level is up for debate but on almost every measure he's doing less. He'll need three goals and three assists in his last four games to match last season's totals but more concerning for me is his overall play, something you can see in the games but is also borne out by the stats. Last season he was winning 53% of his headers, this year it's only 41%. He would take 2.5 shots per game, now it's 1.2 (and of those only 0.5 on target). Of those shots, 1.7 per game would be on target or blocked by a defender, now it's down to 0.7. He was attempting 1.2 dribbles per game, now it's 0.7. He was attempting 1.9 tackles per game, now it's 0.9. He would provide a pass leading to a team mate shooting 1.5 times a game, now it's 1.1. He would make 34 passes per game, now it's 24. In summary, our captain and supposed talisman is doing less of almost everything on the pitch, and he's just not that involved in games anymore, which makes all of his soundbites about being up for it somewhat hollow. This season on average: he'll get a shot on target once every two games, have six shots for every five games he plays, attempt two dribbles for every three games he plays, one tackle per game, one pass that leads to a shot per game and lose 60% of his headers. Add to that the total lack of movement and it's not enough to justify always starting next year.
I think for all of that, a lot of it is down to Ighalo. No matter how bad Ighalo went off the boil last year, Troy always had someone permanently supporting him and someone for the other defenders to have to deal with. Being the sole striker now (and most of the time sole means no other player withing 20 yards of him) he has become so isolated that he is getting nothing, absolutely nothing at all. I think for every hoof to him last night, at least 2 but sometimes 3 defenders were around him as they had no one else to worry about. I think most strikers would struggle to play a system that involves the tactics we are using.
Sorry but he's just not good enough anymore. We've bought in players who are above his level and he's playing now purely because he's the captain.
He wasn't great yesterday but the service was absolutely awful, overhit passes, drilled passes at him as 3 defenders surround him
He doesn't move though, it's ridiculous. He prefers a fight with centre backs which is fine for a target man but not when he's a target man who doesn't hold up the ball and wins little in the air.
