He has all the makings of a Watford legend.

To be a Watford legend you don't have to score goals or even be very good, you just have to work the hardest. We like our workers and Deeney never, ever gives up. The man has the stamina of seven donkeys.

Seems a lot sharper this season, has gained an extra yard of pace and is built like a tank. Finishing does need to improve but he seems a lot more selfish in front of goal and is prepared to have a pop at goal even if it doesn't always go in! I think he actually has decent technique when it comes to hitting a ball like Marv does but he just needs to get some composure in front of goal sometimes. Get him working on one-on-ones in the Summer Dychey!

He is very much in the Tommy Mooney category.

Definately one of my favourite players. Never gives up and unless he scores a lot next year i doubt he'll be moving anytime soon.

Will never score loads of goals but will run through brick walls for the team and never knows when he is beaten. What more do you need? Deeney - Deeney Deeney

Has a great attititude and you cannot fault his work rate. He does cause problems for the defence, but doesn't have the composure or ability to take good chances that come his way. Another poor miss early on against Ipswich and had another chance towards the end of the half where he just didn't get enough power on the shot to beat the keeper. Having said that the goal he scored for the winner was superb, so he does have it in his locker, only he is nowhere near consistant enough. However, if we had someone of the quality of say Kevin Phillips along side him, I think that would work very well as a combination. I have met him and he is a really bubbly character. It's impossible not to like him.

definately now justifying his transfer fee. Would like to see him given a longer contract as he always gives his all for the team. I would rather have him on the pitch than a more skilled player like Macanuff who only performed when he wanted to.

He's a very important player for us. Has a habit of scoring important goals.

The thing about Deeney that you forget is that he's still just 23. He's still learning.

You could tell after he made that tackle on their full back, just before he scored the winner, that he was totally knackered. But the fans singing his name gave him that extra bit of energy - and his goal was unbelievable considering how tired he must have been.

I think his season is very similar to Danny's first with us. He's had to try and find his feet, and adapt to the difficulties of being our talisman. He's definitely not helped by the fact that Garner is ineffectual, and Iwelumo is only capable of playing 35mins tops.

He just needs to learn to put away the easy chances. I think he's more than capable of doing so, he just needs to have a bit more composure.

"WATFORD FC has today exercised an option clause in Troy Deeney's contract to extend his current terms for a further year - until summer 2013.

The striker has notched five times in 10 games since (and including) a January transfer deadline day goal at Millwall, the same evening as Marvin Sordell left the Hornets, with an overall tally of eight for the campaign.

"Options such as these are commonplace in our players' contracts," explained Football Business Director Ross Wilson.

"So with effect from today, we're pleased to have extended the contract of Troy Deeney for a further period of 12 months."

    Good stuff.

Excellent news, irony is that Deeney was a Malky signing and at the moment looks a good bit of business if his progress continues. However the only reason he's getting anywhere is the impact Dyche has had in him IMO. Playing him up top and giving him a chance whereas Malky continually failed to use him properly.

    "DEENEY! DEENEY! DEENEY!"

Wow a little worrying though that we let his contract run down until now. Had we not taken this option, then his contract would have expired in 3 months time.

if he hadn't scored 5 in 10 games and was sitting with a record of 5 goals in 70 appearances then people would have been happy to see him go.

    its a funny old game

True. Footballers and managers are judged on recent performances and records, which is why I am very surprised that the club has waited until now to renew Deeney's contract. To judge footballers on past records though would be crazy, as I could say therefore that Nathan Ellington is quality championship striker

The club must be looking to offer him a new contract in the summer though surely?

I would have given him a new 2 or 3 year contract. If he continues to improve we will have to sell him in the January window.

As said above, up until recently has his goal scoring improved. If that continues, then i'm sure he'll get a new contract on better terms for himself. At the moment, whats the point in taking on more wages for a player who has only just started to show potential. His form could severely drop in the next 6 months, we just don't know. Sensible from the club.

Surely if a player is showing potential then it is worth a gamble to try and sign him on for longer. Even before the last six months he was a useful squad player. I agree we have been stung in the past by the likes of Ellington, but Deeney is not going to be on high wages. He is alread far superior to the likes of Garner.

My concern is if Deeney starts off next season scoring consistently then his agent may advise him to just see out the final 12 months of his contract and then leave on a free. Deeney would then be able to get a very large signing on fee with a new club and a bumper contract.

It is a gamble but we don't want to be left in a Cowie situation albeit I think he is overated.

Should think that he will sing a new contract if he finishes the season as our top goalscorer (including Sordell). It's the longest period of time that he has played for us in his favoured position as a striker and it shows in our results and the important goals he is scoring for us. His confidence is growing every game, his finishing will improve and he's actually trying to score from positions that he wouldn't have bothered with before. Whether the balls are going in or not his contribution to the team and workrate is phenomenal. Well done Troy!

Troy's Watford career in a way mirrors Dyche's as manager. Underwhelming signing/appointment when made. Laboured at first without much success. Slowly but surely found his feet thanks to his hard work ethic. Well liked and respected by those around him. After a slow beginning, is now really starting to be a success and proving the doubters wrong.

constantly works his boll ocks off,

his goal on saturday was all about a 110 % effort as without that he would have been no where near the ball

Lovely goal on Saturday but id rather he starts scoring the tap ins.

Scoring the easy chances is what will determine if he is a success at Watford, not chipping in from the corner flag

I would imagine we will negotiate a new contrct with him over the summer; the taking up of the option is just to secure him until then.

I reckon the new owners should probably know that despite his work rate, he's not going to fire us into the prem. If he is sacked/sold they'll probably do it based on footballing reasons.
