Scored 28 and missed 6 in his career - an 18% miss rate. It's inevitable players will miss some but it seems to happen too often with Deeney. Should someone else be on penalties from now on?

I wouldn't be opposed to someone like Geri taking pens, but that's a decent record, no?

Isn't the average success rate of penalties around 80% ?

If so, Troy's numbers seem pretty fine to me, although he certainly could do with some variation to the technique every now and again

Well he changed from the usual style - probably to outfox the goalie but instead outfoxed himself.

Did look in two minds there, and ended up with pretty much the worst case scenario

With his style, he’d miss more.

I know it’s probably hard for them to do, but with Troy’s penalty technique if the keepers did their homework on him they’d just not dive early and save most of them. He doesn’t/can’t put them in the very corners so if the keeper waits or guesses right they are all in very saveable areas. He doesn’t have a bad record so it obviously works (to an extent) in his own way, but yesterday’s miss was a long time coming. His last few penalties had all pretty much been in the same place, all in and around the middle, so if the keeper guesses right it’s easily saved. At least if he picked the very corner then even if the keeper guesses right there is alway the chance they can’t get to the ball and it still goes in, but Troy doesn’t seem to be able, or want to do this.

He struggles to hit a barn door in open play, so we can hardly expect him to actually place a penalty into the corner.

But at least he has the guts to step up and take it and his success ratio is only slightly down on the Prem average.

But I wonder if WFC have actually looked at an alternative, or whether penalties are just deemed to be "Troy's territory", and untouchable.

Not the best photo, but yes he went ever so slightly to one side, but miles away from the actual corner. What I’m talking about is putting the ball right in the corner so that even if the keeper guesses correctly they still might not get to the ball. Troy never does this, so when the keeper guesses correctly, or waits then it’s easily saved.

Any half decent keeper should save TD's penalties if they guess right and dive the right way as they are usually at a very savable height for a keeper.

What I don’t understand about this argument that Deeneys penalties are not great is his record which says he is not bad at them. At least all the ones he doesn’t score are saved.

Not far off, 76% is around the average. I thought his record was decent but apparently its pretty average.

I agree with the point that Deeney's penalties always go somewhere around the centre of the goal, right into the more saveable territory. When he gets away with it, which is most of the time, there's no argument from anyone. The flip side is he aims for the margins of the goal and occasionally misses the goal altogether or hits the woodwork.

As has been indicated, his record is about standard, but we also need to consider that he's taken some in very high pressure circumstances and scored. That's not something that all players, even those with better technique, can do.

What's more, who on earth in our squad do you trust as the alternative? I can possibly see Pereyra as a back up taker. Otherwise they're mostly a disaster waiting to happen or a potential bottle job.

You could sum Troy’s penalties up by saying when they go in they look great and when they are saved they look very poor, based on where he puts them which is in and around the middle section of the goal.

You could actually say he’s quite clever because whatever happens he is never going to miss the target, so always gives the keeper something to do. The players who can put the ball in the very extremes of the goal will eventually hit the bar/post or put it over or wide, in the case of putting it over or wide you then of course have zero chance of scoring.

Ultimately his record isn’t bad, but his style means with every 5 penalties he will miss one or two, this is inevitable.

Pereyra took the last one we got without Deeney on the pitch - tbf he took it well I remember.

TBH We've always had an iffy record at penalties since the 90s anyway apart from Helguson who used to just roll them in.

Mind you we scored 7 out of 8 in our most famous penalty shoot out win!

Bring back Ian Bolton I say. Luther was very good at penalties also.

I will always back a player who goes for power though. The pace of the ball is what normally beats a keeper even if he dives the right way.

Yesterday’s was one of Deeney’s worst. It was obvious which way the keeper was going to go, as he was heavily leaning towards the right. Deeney should have gone down the middle as he usually does. Maybe he conned himself by thinking the keeper would stand still expecting one down the middle.

There are not too many very good penalty takers around though. Vardy is excellent as is Nolan from West Ham. I think Deeney has a very good track record though and I would certainly back him to score the next one.

Deeney doesn't have the technique to place the ball right in the corners. He normally hits them central to the goalkeepers left. If I was a keeper I would stand up and stay pretty still, brave to do as look a mug if the ball goes in one of the corners.

That’s exactly what I’d do if I was a keeper facing Troy and I’d say if you did you’d save around 7/10 of his penalties. I always though keepers watched videos of where the opposition penalty taker had put their last few penalties, but maybe they don’t. I’ve certainly seen the odd game when a coach brings an iPad over for them to have a look but that’s fairly rare. I would’ve thought it would just be basic pre-game preparation. I’m not complaining mind, but anybody doing their research would see he never ever puts the ball in any of the corners.

Deeney should study the technique of Harry 'The Best' Kane, who never misses.

The problem with his penalties is that they always give the GK a window of ‘saveability’ - they are rarely hit above chest height or beyond a keepers reach either side. The GK doesn’t really have to worry about the corners as he doesn’t go for them.

He relies on the power a bit too much IMO but I have no real issue with him taking them as even the best players miss them occasionally.

Give it to Pereyra if he is on the pitch. Simon Brotherton the excellent cycling commentator also managed to get his facts mixed up when describing Deeney as an excellent penalty taker. Was it a great save ? Not really. A poor penalty. Low and hard to the corner every time please.

The high pressure point is crucial here I think. Even if Deeney’s overall conversation record is in line with the average, I’d wager he’s scored a much higher proportion of key goals at key times for us than a lot of the others. It matters a lot more when the penalty might be the result of the team’s first notable attack in an hour against one of the big boys.

Pearson seemed a bit taken aback in his post-match interview when the BT interviewer mentioned that Deeney said he wouldn't apologise for the penalty miss (because supposedly he didn't need to apologise for this one as he scores most of them).

Did Troy have a point, or was it his sometimes misplaced arrogance briefly getting the better of him again?

Anyone else think NP will have a slightly critical word in his ear about the comments?

It's understandable to miss the occasional penalty, but they're such great opportunities that you should be determined to score every one.

I don’t personally think he should be apologising. It’s not like he missed trying a panenka or anything.

Can anyone recall any previous occasions we've missed a penalty, aside from Cleverley's at Everton?

I have to say the team deserves a fair bit of credit for not letting that miss get to their heads and just carrying on to try to get the win, under previous managers the team would have crumbled.

Craig Shakesphere on the extra time thing after the game said he didn't think Deeney would apologies either and didn't expect him to.

I am sure Troy would put his hand up but not make a big thing if it.
