I guess the question is without a replacement will we miss him?

Probably yes but if we did get one in who hit the ground running rather than getting injured or falling over a lot (Success/Okaka) then that would be an ideal replacement.

Would Deeney himself be happy just being a squad player - there were suggestions last year he wasn't too chuffed about being dropped but that was under a poor manager in an unsettled squad.

He's clearly eaten Mauro Zarate whole and is now having him removed.

If there was a legitimate reason for being dropped I don't think he would have had a problem.

If I gave you the best carpentry tools money could buy and a class-A education in carpentry and asked you to build be a shed, and you failed, I'd be pissed off and sacked you.

I feel like this is what happened with Mazzarri and Deeney, except Mazzarri gave him a couple of rocks and some twigs. He set the team up to fail. Deeney didn't have a suitable partnership after Ighalo left and there wasn't the creativity needed to create goals. It was just "bang up to big D!" and let him create something out of nothing.

But. He was overweight. If he was to be dropped it should have been at the beginning until he got himself fit.

Deeney deserved to he dropped last season. Looked too bulked up and immobile , waving arms and moaning when ball not played to his feet.
With new coach hoping he will come back reenegergised but going in for an op at an important time in pre season far from ideal.
Begs the question when did this injury happen and if hangover from last season why has op been delayed.
Desperate need for new striker and worrying no one obvious on the horizon.

Not obvious to us, but I have no doubts that Pozzo's will have someone in. Whoever they bring in has to be able to score goals as a lone striker, which is not easy. There aren't many strikers like that. They'll bring one in, just have to be patient. There's no way they won't bring someone in when Deeney is going under the knife and Okaka is ****.

Looking at how Marco set up yesterday and the fact he dropped Okaka, I can't see Troy fitting his style of play.

Newcastle at those odds has got to be worth a tenner?

Still can't see anything other than Deeney staying here personally. I think pundits and media outlets are latching onto nothing just to fill a bit of air space because they cba to do proper research on us. I.e. Merson

    1. Why would he leave?.. I can't think of another club in the prem who would match his wages or our asking price. He's our captain, a fan favourite and the main man in the dressing room which plays to his ego, any club he moves to he would be just another player. We've just developed an English core, including a couple of players known to be good friends with Deeney

    2. Why would we sell him?.. Been 1 of our best players for 5 years now and still is. The only real leader we have in our squad. Just Gray and Okaka won't be enough depth, and Okaka is regularly injured. I'm also pretty sure he'll be ahead of Okaka when he returns to fitness. Despite his performance against Liverpool I was underwhelmed with him all pre-season.

I reckon he'll start on Tuesday against Bristol City and score. Then the talk of him leaving will be forgotten.

Would love to see this. One reason to show up on Tuesday.

I agree that we can't afford to let him go, unless the likes of Sinclair and Jakubiak can step up. But keeping Troy and Okaka happy without regular games is a big ask.

I also reckon he'll start on Tuesday on score, but should still be behind Okaka and Gray in the pecking order whether he stays or not.

Deeny is a legend for us we can't get rid of him , yes he is a bit on the chubby side but he is a big problem for most defences especially now we have creative players who can play with him or just behind .

I was hoping that Silver can try a 4.3.3 formation with deeny striker and Richalison and gray on the wings
With a midfield of doc , chal , per when fit , with clev every other game .

Deffence. Same but with Cathcart slowly coming back in for Brit .

He is a quality player and good to have around the squad but he must be thinking about how much game time he's actually going to get.

He's worth £20m at the moment and looking at how Silva seems to want to stretch defences to create space elsewhere, Troy doesn't fit into this style.

I hope he stays but if someone comes in with a panic bid (The Geordies) and we can replace him with another Gray type player then it would make sense to cash in.

The prospect of losing Troy isn't nearly as scary as it would have been a few seasons ago. I'd still hate to see him leave as I think a fully fit and firing Deeney is horrible for any defence to deal with.

It's refreshing that all this talk of Deeney possibly leaving is at last just about the potential loss of a good player, rather than the loss of Captain Galvaniser. It's early days under Silva but at least the team/squad/club already looks like a united camp with a stronger identity than before.
