Nobody has done any real business of note yet. Some clubs are still even figuring out managerial appointments. It’s nothing new.

I don’t want us to do a lot of business. We don’t need loads of upheaval. Two or three key signings is good enough.

True - but you have to factor in people who leave who you would prefer to stay - out of choice i suspect the club would prefer to bank 35m for selling Lukebakio and Peyrera and keep the other 2 big talents - if that is the case 2/3 in could be right plus replacements so 4/5 in total - if all 4 go then we are looking at 6/7 needed - If Janmaat & Navarro both go - we need a right sided defender - we clealr need a centre back, If Bachmann and Gomes go we need a keeper. I can't see Okaka playing for us again - we need a forward - then we need to fill in the replacements for whoever leaves. Then there are the issues with Penaranda and Success - are we seeing them as potential first choice players - probably not is my guess

Quite right but my point was more around upheaval to the starting XI. Pereyra would need to be replaced. And so would Janmaat. Bachman could be classed as Gomes replacement. Lukebakio could potentially be just money in the banking used as ‘working capital’ as he’s no loss from last season as he wasn’t here anyway and Navarro didn’t kick a ball really. Hoban definitely didn’t. Britos has gone but we had plenty of CB’s - it’s quality we lack there, not quantity. Cucho (if he comes) will make up for the loss of Okaka.

I just don’t see large numbers coming in. Penaranda never really got going due to the issues at the start of the season. And Success has a 5 year deal freshly signed. I imagine they will both be here. Potential loans for either of them though maybe.

The squad needs trimming due to the amount of deadweight in it. Obviously you need strength in numbers but there’s no point replacing players who didn’t play with others who won’t either.

If I had to guess - and that’s all it is - I suspect Pereyra might move on and Janmaat too. Wouldn’t be surprised if they stay though. The deadwood above will leave but not really need replacing. Foulquier did well in Spain so he may well be thought of as a Janmaat/Navarro replacement.

Get Prodl through the door as he won’t be playing, get two quality CB’s in. Get a quality winger in and trim the deadwood. I’d be perfectly happy with that. Maybe a striker too if Cucho isn’t coming but I suspect he is. I doubt we will sell any of the ones we have outside of Okaka.

I don’t see Doucoure leaving as the market isn’t there for him at the price we’d want. And I don’t think Deulofeu is consistent enough for clubs to pay what we would want - yet.

This is pretty much how I see it as well.

From the start of last season Kaboul, Britos, Hoban have all gone and Prodl will almost certainly be allowed to leave once we've signed a couple of replacements. We were top heavy on central defenders, but 4 will be off the books, leaving only Cathcart, Kabs, Mapps plus two possible additions. I'd be happy with that and don't forget Wilmot can be a useful back up player. There was talk of Kabasele going so it wouldn't surprise me if he left as well as I don't think Gracia really trusts him and that may make a better balance if we're bringing in two "first team" central defenders.

All the talk is of centre backs but in the "rumour world" we have also been linked to a lot of wide forwards. Mostly on the left, so that tells me Pereyra will probably go even though the club would like to retain him. He has to sign a new contract though, but if he doesn't then the club will have to cash in on him in this window.

You have to be careful over the "deadwood" players. We all have our own ideas on who these players are, but Gracia has turned around the fortunes of many players who I considered were probably beyond their usefulness such as Holebas, Capoue, Deeney.

Having said that, if you were not a regular part of the first team squad last season, then you'll probably not be part of it this season either. The most noticeable player for that category would be Navarro. Janmaat only has a year left on his contract, and whilst I feel he has something to offer, I think we'll try to sell him. He's often talked about wanting to go back to Holland, so a move there would not surprise me. Clearly if those two were sold, then a new right back would be a big priority.

When it comes to strikers, I don't see us signing anyone. We know Okaka isn't part of the club's future, even though Gracia seems to like him. Sinclair is nowhere near Premier league level, and that's proven when it's only clubs like Oxford United from League One that want him. But we have the enigmatic Penaranda, and possibly Cucho and Pedro to come into the equation at some point next season. We have to keep spaces open for these players. I'm not sure Success really has the desire as a player. He lost his way a couple of seasons ago, seemed to be very apologetic and humble at the beginning of last season, but really fumbled his way around the pitch and generally didn't look too bothered when he was given a chance. We'll probably keep him around, but I don't see him being too influential. It will be Deeney, Gray, Deulofeu, Pereyra/or new signing with Cucho, Pedro, Penaranda and Success as other options.

Midfield is nicely settled. We've even got, hopefully, the return of Chalobah and Cleverly to add to the talent pool. Quina should have more of a impact next season also.

I've got to be honest, I don't know too much about how decent Bachmann is. Is he an able replacement for Gomes? We'll have to trust the club on that decision. Of course, Gomes might even yet stay for another season.

All in all, a lot depends on who goes, but if all stay, sign new deals where needed etc, then we only really need two central defenders at this stage.

Our end of season was appalling and showed we need significant investment. At least 2 centre backs, new left back, right back, goalkeeper and 2 strikers needed, just to tread water!!

Jarrod Bowen looks like a real prospect and could sort out the problematic right side of midfield. Hughes is a great player but is wasted out there. Good scoring record and by all accounts from my Hull supporting colleague works his bollox off. 12m is a snip considering the inflated prices of some championship players.

He's typically been linked with bigger clubs than us, e.g. Arsenal.

Also, I'd be astonished if he only goes for £12mil. Maddison cost Leicester £22mil, while James cost Utd £15mil, and his output has been closer to Maddison's than James'.

Leventhal has tweeted and is replying to fans questions...

    So far:
Kim Min-Jae is a target but would be signed now to arrive in Jan.
Expects Okaka, Prodl and Dahlberg (loan) to leave.
Envisages Dawson to be No.1 CB and to galvanise the existing ones we have.
Definite interest in record move for Sarr - could be an auction though.
Wilmot is potentially an option as CB this year.
Lukebakio will join up with squad but could leave.
Doucoure could leave if big clubs don’t secure primary targets but will be staying most likely.
Cucho expected to be an option NEXT season, not this year.

Sky Sports ‘sources’ say an unnamed English club has agreed a fee with Leeds for Pontus Jansson. Journalist who covers Leeds (Phil Hay) says fee is £5.5m.

Would we be happy if it was us? I hear he’s pretty good.

Would be good if it was us but it’s not. We’re saving our £5.5mil funds now for deadline day to sign Zeegalaar 2.0. This way we can all moan about how we could have signed Jansson for the same fee for the rest of the season when we see Mariappa in the starting 11.

We need to get a hurry up and get business concluded ASAP before the approaching window allows European clubs to hold us over a barrel. However Gino looks to have Daniel Levy as his role model with the purse strings. We still need a ball playing CB, a decent striker or perhaps two and winger. And that is a minimum. The squad needs freshening up and real competition for places at the back and upfront.

Which would be depressing. We do not want signings just for the sake of signings. We want signings to take us that little bit forward. Not of course into CL contention or anything like that but to make sure we keep ahead of the promoted sides and the other middling clubs so to speak so we stay in the division with relative comfort once again with all that entails financially.

Yes it would be disappointing. But thinking from their perspective if everyone stays the chances of us being relegated are slim, so they are only going to buy if they think they are getting value. In the current market that could lead to a very quiet summer as some of the fees are absurd at the moment.

It’s Brentford. Weird move from Leeds but if even Bielsa who’s a bit crazy thinks that Jansson can’t be controlled, then I’d say there is likely a big attitude problem.

In other news, Bournemouth supposedly asking for £25m for Tyrone Mings. The market is crazy.

We won’t sign a striker with Cucho and Joao Pedro to come in the next 12 months or before. A winger and perhaps another CB and that’s your lot I’d say.

Would have been nice to have our business all done by now but in reality, the market has barely even started - we are no further behind anyone else so I don’t see the panic yet.

Back to the striker point - Deeney and Gray don’t like going anywhere. Would be a shock if they did. We played Deulofeu up top to good effect so he’s likely to stay there. Success is still here. Penaranda too. Okaka will likely leave but for now he’s with us. And the two names above to come in the next year. I’d be staggered if we buy a striker and we certainly won’t without a few of the above leaving - and in reality, that’s unlikely.

As I've already posted elsewhere on here, Deeney is already 31. For someone who was never blessed with much pace or fitness to begin with, and has not been one of our top performers for ages, that's a huge worry. Also, Cucho and JP are both very young, especially for strikers, and neither can be expected to be regular starters as our main striker when they join. I know you like Cucho, but he's shown little that suggests he won't just be another Penaranda or Success.

We simply don't have an especially good quality number 9 - it has been our most important area that has needed addressing since Ighalo left, other than CB.

As you say, it's likely that Okaka will leave anyway, but if we signed another first team striker then I'm sure Gray would then be quickly out the door and he wouldn't be especially difficult to shift. Penaranda is not a centre forward, and Success will likely be testing the patience of those at the club (and isn't necessarily a centre forward either).

I’m not particularly talking about the quality of strikers we already have. More that none of them outside of Okaka (who didn’t feature last season so is unlikely to be replaced) would be likely to move on and that means it’s would be staggering if we brought one in. More likely that we sign a winger who can play up top in a similar way to Deulofeu.

As fans, I agree, we would all like a quality No.9 to come in. But I just think reality that it’s very unlikely. In an ideal world, we would shift 2/3 out and get a couple in but there are no rumours about any of them moving on. While I agree it’s unlikely that either Cucho or Joao Pedro would come in as 1st choice, they are clearly highly thought of and signing another striker would be another obstacle to the first team for them. I genuinely think we will have Deeney/Gray/Deulofeu/Success until either or both of Cucho and Joao Pedro arrive.

I know it's only the Watford Observer, but the last article I saw on there which mentioned Choochoo stated that the club have been disappointed with how he's performed for Huesca (as they should be).

You say again that none of them outside Okaka would be likely to move on, but I'm sure the club could find a buyer for Gray from, say, either Sheffield Utd or an upper Champ club, for £5mil-10mil very quickly if they'd lined up an upgrade.

I don't think signing a winger that can also play up top will have anything to do with the striker situation - either we'll keep Lukebakio for that, or sign a replacement for him. Neither of which would mean that we don't still need an upgrade on Deeney and Gray.

Deeney should not be 1st choice anymore as it is. Him still being 1st choice the following season, once he's 32, which he'd still be needed to be were JP and Cucho to come, would be absolute madness.

What, actually is the point of keeping Success? Early last season I still had hopes for him but, as the season wore on, his performances got increasingly frustrating and depressing with, it seemed, a real attitude problem.

I agree with your points but Success, Okaka and Peneranda all appear to be really poor acquisitions by the recruitment team wasting over 30 million plus wages. They should be working to rectify their awful work.
