Reports from Belgium that Aston Villa are gonna confirm his signing this week. €25m which seems pretty pricey!

    Strikers are pretty pricey !

True, I think this would be the record fee for a player leaving Belgium though (which considering the players to have left that league is no mean feat!) so if this doesn't come off for Villa it'll be an expensive mistake.

Only £4mil more than we paid for Gray 2 seasons ago though.

Will be interesting to see how he does in the PL. Reckon he'll be a good signing for them; certainly an upgrade on Abraham. If we face them while we still have TD up front I suspect it's going to be very annoying.

A striker is going to be a secondary thought for us I imagine. The noises that Leventhal has made and the current linked players suggest as much. If Cucho and Lukebakio come in, I’d be surprised if we even look.

CB’s and wide player seem the focus. So prepare to be annoyed...

Player price inflation over the last 2 years means that the £18m paid for Gray (if true, there was much debate) would be way over €25m in today's money.

I think that's right but I wouldn't rule out us selling either if a fab offer came in and having a replacement lined up.

Oh I agree. Lukebakio looks like he could be a problem if he’s not given regular game-time given his comments. But that being said, he was sent out on loan to impress and he certainly did that - so he deserves a chance. And I think Cucho is very highly thought of - actually think we may have kept him last season if there was a chance of a WP. I still think we should have tried to send him to a team higher in La Liga as Huesca were always going to struggle.

The average age of the squad needs brought down. And we really need to start trusting in youth a bit. I’d keep them unless the bids turned crazy.

We have been linked with a few strikers this summer at least thus far, including Mateta, Samatta and Mothiba - all of which have a fairly similar profile (including to that of Wesley).

Regardless of our differing opinions on the merits of Cucho, it does not appear very likely that he will join us this summer. His contract expires next summer as well, supposedly.

Lukebakio would be competing for a place with Pereyra, Deulofeu and Hughes.

    Probably about equivalent.

You think a player going for €20.2m 2 years ago would only go for $25m today ???

We do have differing opinions on Cucho being ready. And you could be right. But I’d say there’s more chance of him joining us than not. He has fulfilled the requirements for a Spanish passport...and although no one knows, the stories (or theories) I’ve seen are that it’s likely he has signed a contract that was not announced due to him being on loan. But if his contract is up in 12 months, then of course we will sell or do a deal with Barcelona - if they still hold interest. But I think he’ll join us personally....

As for Lukebakio - I agree he will compete with Deulofeu. They both played similar roles last season - winger, turned striker. Both had successful seasons so you’d expect that’s the way to continue. He may be seen as back-up to an extent to Hughes/Pereyra but he’s not the same type of player anymore. I’d be very surprised if they saw him in that role. They play narrow, he doesn’t.

Gray had scored a half decent amount of goals in the PL though, it's a lot to spending on a player who hasn't played at a level above the Belgian league!

32 goals in 3 seasons in a pretty poor league. I would say £25m is a big risk. Have you seen him play much?

As I mentioned initially, I saw parts of the Champion's League group matches he was playing in, and he stood out as being a real handful. Albeit he only scored against Monaco who aren't fantastic. He also scored vs RB Salzburg in the Europa League. It is a big risk still, perhaps why he's ended up at Villa and not somewhere more established, but last season was by all accounts his breakthrough season (he's still just 22), and he looked to me like a player ready to step up.

Has he def fulfilled the passport requirements yet? Not doubting you, but can't remember seeing it confirmed. If Cucho came here now, from what I've seen of him I honestly think he'd get less minutes than Gray and Success.

Lukebakio played an equal amount of games on the wing and as a striker - across the season. He mostly played as a striker against sides in the top half of the table, when Fortuna sat extra deep and looked to counter, and then played as a (proper, not narrow) winger in the matches vs lower opposition where they could generally adopt a more attacking approach. It's not that he's a different type of player. As I commented after seeing him live away at Hertha, I was actually positively surprised by his defensive work, which if anything suggested to me that if he has changed as a player, its by an improvement in his general effort and workrate - given that there were initial question marks about his attitude. This actually means that, if anything, he's sctually now even more suitable to play as a winger for us than when we first signed him. Following Fortuna's reasoning, I'd still avoid using him as a winger in a 4-4-2 away vs the top 6, but other than that he's equally capable of playing either role.

Fair enough. I'm mentally scarred about Belgian players when I think of Oulare!! Still seems a lot of money but I guess that is the going rate. I wonder if they tried to sign Abraham and how much he would cost? I do think Abraham maybe one of those Vydra type players where he is a top 6 Championship player but struggles at a higher level. Still think I would been more tempted by him than this fella though but time will tell

Sell Mariappa and the other deadbeats. Early days in the transfer market.
    Who will come to Watford?
Is our squad good enough to stay up next season?

I suggest playing some thoroughly average young English players from our academy so we can sell them off for £70m.

Wan Bissaka is what...the fifth or sixth best English right back? Crazy.

Where are you getting such a high figure from?

Also: Walker, Alexander-Arnold, Trippier - who are the fourth or fifth?! That England currently have a lot of very good right backs does not mean that AWB isn't still an excellent player.

And last time we had any young English player with lots of talent in the academy City nabbed him for peanuts. The closest thing we currently have to a thoroughly average young English player we can give minutes to is Wilmot - there's not a chance he'll ever be even England's 6th best player in any position.

I think Palace have said they want £60m, still seems a ridiculous figure
Edit - Saying they want £70m now

UNITED TOLD WAN-BISSAKA WILL COST £70M

Crystal Palace have placed a £70m price tag on Aaron Wan-Bissakawith Manchester United in ongoing negotiations with the Eagles, says the Sun.

The England U21 international right back favours a move to Unitedthis summer, Sky Sports News understands.

He shouldn't be. Quality player who's better than the dross that plays in his position for the national team.

And of course, signing for United means an automatic pass into the England team. He probably knows that.

In fairness AWB’s better than Walker and Trippier. He can actually defend for starters! AA’s crossing ability and athleticism make him a more all-round modern full-back though.

He'd perhaps be out of reach, but if we eventually need a Capoue replacement then raiding Javi's old club Real Sociedad for their 22 year-old midfielder Igor Zubeldia would be excellent.

Looking very good for Spain U21s vs Italy at the moment and seems a very similar, all-action type midfielder to Etienne.

Another one from the U21 Euros: Marco Richter has really impressed, a 21 year-old attacking midfielder (predominantly left-sided) for Germany - 3 goals and 2 assists so far after 1.5 games.

He only plays for Augsburg in the Bundesliga, who finished just 1 place above relegation last season. He really broke in to their team towards the tail end of last season and was then probably their best performer, finishing the season by notching 4 goals and 3 assists in their last 6 games. Really seems to be on the up. Could be a potential Pereyra replacement.

I’ve been in Spain for a few days now and not heard a WFC rumour at all. I think this theory about it being a hotbed of transfer rumours is duff.

Does this seem a really slow window for us with very little rumour action or have we been spoilt previously? I know some have complained about the number of silly rumours in the past but I’m craving some transfer rumour or gossip.

It’s depressing clicking refresh on NewsNow only to see stories about Oxford sniffing after Sinclair. Are we ever going to sign centre backs and bring in a brand new prolific striker at a bargain price or from our loanees?

I had a dream we got into relegation trouble the other night because we’d not invested and were absolutely dire which clearly reflects my underlying anxiety. I’m starting to worry we have reached our high water mark last season and it’s all down hill from now.

Something to revive your enthusiasm. Cameroon had a player score in the ACN today called Yaya Banana. He's a CB as well and earned a score 8.0 from FotMob. I can either feel a Yaya song coming on or a new thread of culinary delight!
