I think the club would pay £13m for a prospect if they felt it was the right decision. Richarlison was only just 20 when he signed for similar money.

Of course they would. People they won't need to take a long hard look at themselves

Agree with this. Hughes is probably our cleverest passer of the ball and I like him because he's got a bit of an attitude towards opponents but he can't play in a midfield two. If we switched to a 4-2-3-1, I think he could do well surrounded by a striker and two wide forwards with good pace and movement but that doesn't appear to be on the cards anytime soon.

He makes the starting line up at the moment due to the formation we're playing and because he's better than Sema. I don't think he's got a long term future on the right flank though.

Terrible 1 on 1 miss by Vydra yesterday. That literally never happens. All part of a master plan to knock a few more £ms off the asking price ? I think so ! He's coming home I tell you.

Someone has asked him about defensive targets and he's replied:

"As it stands, the long list of names linked in defensive positions don’t seem to be happening."

Reassuring. Also gives some credence to the story that the Korean lad has turned us down for China.

As much as I want us to sign at least a CB, if it doesn’t happen Javi has got us this far with the current squad.

I still think we will bring in at least one or two, but if it doesn’t I won’t be overly disappointed.

I don't expect any new signings now. However a nice surprise in a Quina type of way is always possible with our owners. Onwards and upwards!

Hughes' best position is the same as it was when Derby fans told us when he first moved here: one of the advanced midfielders in a 4-3-3, preferably the Xavi/Iniesta roles in that kind of midfield three (with one defensive sponge/recycler and two more advanced passers/dribblers). That of course doesn't even fit with our immense strength in defensive/central midfield with Doucs and Capoue first on the teamsheet as it stands, let alone the fact that we don't play a 4-3-3, so he won't be getting there anytime soon. Our lack of a striker capable of playing as a lone number 9 and scoring goals (fingers rubbing each other down to the bone in anticipation/hope for Isaac...) also impacts on other players, like Hughes not being able to play the 10 in a 4-2-3-1, the most analogous formation and position to the ideal that would still allow us to play our central midfielders and make use of Hughes' talents.

It's possible that a rearranging of personnel in the summer will lead to a shift in formation and how Hughes is used, but it's equally possible that it just won't.

Surprised not to see Alfredo Morelos' name mentioned anywhere on here - tearing it up in the SPL, quick, and a composed finisher; looks exactly the kind of striker we need and I think would be a better punt than the likes of Che Adams at a similar cost. Only 22 as well, so still with upside potential for the Pozzos:

Something about his movement and style of play reminds me of Ighalo, albeit he has better dribbling ability.

I think a lot of clubs would be interested in him, but there's plenty of issues regarding his discipline (on the pitch) and apparently has a bit of an attitude problem as well.

All the more reason why he'd be a great fit for us then.

Nicolas Dominguez. A replacement for Doucoure ? This youngster has already played over fifty senior games for Velez one of the brightest academies in Argentina in recent years with former team mate Santiago Caseres now a mainstay at Villareal.

Dominguez has plenty of self confidence as a person and has it as well on the pitch. A right footed central midfielder he has been brought on as a player by Gabriel Heinze who has shifted him to play more of a defensive role. Nicolas is comfortable on the ball playing predominantly with his right foot and a very decent dribbler with the ball and can make surging runs beyong the midfield to attack the box with effect.

As a defensive midfielder he reads the game very well for his age dropping off and pressing at the right times and is very aggressive and strong at forcing opponents off the ball and making interceptions. When he breaks the attack down he often finds the right outlet pass and is never hurried on the ball unless absolutely necessary. He is probably now second only to Santiago Asascibar in a struggling Stuttgart team for the defensive midfield role (Palacios and Lo Celso senior would occupy playmaking roles though they can also play this role)in the Argentine national team and is continually developing.

I think we need a ball carrier in midfield as a replacement for Doucoure/cover for Quina. We struggle without Doucoure as none of the other midfielders are as capable as dragging the team up the pitch ten yards.

Another excellent performance from Algerian Said Benrahma for Brentford yesterday. Technically adept, solid character keeps his head up and delivers accurate passes and crosses for the most part and gets into boxes to finish others approach play. Pretty speedy and comfortable on either flank. I know Arsenal have been linked but with the likely departure of Pereyra or Deulofeu or both this summer and the funds generated we should be looking at him. At Arsenal his game time will be limited.

Having witnessed the efforts of Isaac Success as a support act to our main strikers, and comparing them to worn out journeyman Ryan Babel. Would the latter be a worthy addition to our squad next season? He can player on wing or striker. A better option off the bench than we have at the moment?

Yes. Mind you compared to Success, so is every other striker/winger with premier league game time this season.

Also can play in the same position as Sema. He's 32 now, but could be good on a season long loan.

You've not seen much of Fulham then since Babel's come in? He's been their stand-out performer since signing; 5 goals and 3 assists in 14 games (including a few cracking goals).

Old mercenary journeyman striker on high wages who is playing for a contract. Completely the wrong type of player we should be signing with our low cost base.

I’ve seen plenty of Fulham since he came in. They remain rancid and got played off the pitch at home to Cardiff this weekend. Keeper played a blinder.

  28. lowerrous

His wages couldn't be higher than Pereyra's surely. And if he worked his nuts off as much for us across a single season loan as he has for Fulham thus far, I wouldn't care less if he's an "old mercenary journeyman".

If you look at my post above. I wasn't advocating giving him a long-term deal.

PS "old mercenary journeyman" is a pretty accurate description for many of Pozzo's signings for us over the years - take Holebas, Cassetti or Behrami for instance. didn't do us any harm.

Who in our first XI on Saturday would you class as a veteran journeyman mercenary?

Foster? Seems harsh as he was at WBA for donkeys years and has a connection to us. Nobody else fits the bill.

Behrami I’ll give you. Holebas 3 years Olympiacos, a season as Serie A’s outstanding full back and now 4 years with us. Casetti 6 years at Roma before joining us. These are simply different profiles.

Now Mr Babel. After his disaster at Liverpool in the last 8 years he has been at: Hoffenheim. Ajax. Kasimpasca. Al Ain. Besiktas. Deportivo: Fulham. Nobody wants to keep him for more than a year. This transfer suggestion is low grade.

What's on everyone's summer shopping list?
    For me:
    RW
    LW
ST (unless Cucho gets a WP)
    2 x CB
    Replacements for anyone we sell.

  32. lowerrous

And as I said twice, I wouldn't want to either.

Regardless of Cucho's WP, he's not ready yet anyway (and may never be).

I agree with that list, but I'd also consider adding another good CM - there's a huge drop from Capoue and Doucoure to our next bunch, so when they're injured, tired or suspended we struggle. I'm surprised they're both not completely shattered given how reliant we are on them being able to play every PL minute.

I would expect Babel is on more money than Pereyra.

Fulham not been exactly thrifty this season, and they had to persuade him to join a sinking ship.

  35. Easy, just blow the dust off the shopping list from the same time last year, and the year before that

At least 1 preferably 2 ball playing CBs, and a complete striker who can play 1 up front in a 433 or 4231
