I remember that there were several threads on here some time ago on getting cheap train travel including cheap upgrades to 1st class. I know PYA was a regular poster on that topic.

Anyway, now I'm looking for advice. We are coming to UK for a visit and want to make two trips of three adults and two kids to York and Bath from London. Any advice on how to make cheapest trips (they will be out and return same day) and any smart ways of getting 1st class would be very welcome.

you need to trade off prices between the trainline.com red spottedhankey.com and the website of the train company. In my experience no one provider is always the cheapest.
It's much cheaper to book well in advance and at the weekends you can normally upgrade to first for £10-15.

Befriend someone with a National Rail Gold Card (comes with an annual ticket) - they will get you 30% off if they travel with you.

I didn't realise that there are very good deals only available overseas so I think that may be our best bet.
