Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 Watford FC - 08/04/2017

  1. If we finish the season 7 points above relegation place then not as important as you suggest

I think you're going over the top with this. You had a point few could argue with a few month back... the football was dire and wally looked a dead man walking. I wanted him shot. Since then things have picked up a bit, it's not great but it's picked up. Personally I think you need to cut wally and the team a wee bit of slack and see how the rest of the season goes. We're not going down.

I said if we draw we should be safe. If we draw next week, I will not be overly concerned. If we lose they would only be 6 points behind, so that just 2 wins and one draw. With our final six games, I honestly believe we could lose the lot, or maybe get just get a couple of points at best.

    But they did argue.....massively.

The only point I'm making, which I think is 100% valid a few should argue with, is that we cannot afford to lose next Saturday.

I hope we don't go down of course, but there is still some work to do. We are not as safe as many are making out.

    It's not 100% valid. It's 100% your opinion.

A team that is mentally weak. Cannot control a game. Is often overrun. Is too easy to play against.

We've been this far too often this season and we need the robustness or strength of character of a Burnley, Hull or Bournemouth. With our superior squad to those sides, it would take us a long way in this league.

Look at West Brom. They have Nyom, Robson-Kanu FFS.......but they have that togetherness and sheer will to grind out results which made them safe weeks ago.

    Yes....100% valid opinion.

Totally expected, essentially Spurs just turned it on and were better in every position.

Nordin is having a bit of a nightmare at the moment, just back from injury etc but looks devoid of confidence which is sad to see. Success was awful too, definitely not good enough to be starting right now, think Walter is right.

Thought Holebas was our best player, some lovely balls in and got in Alli's face which I enjoyed.

I haven't watched enough of West Brom or Muff this season to know if your argument is valid...I truly doubt that you have either

I have been hugely critical of our players and manager this season for very good reasons...just don't think that argument is valid this week after the grit we saw on Tuesday followed by a masterclass by today's opposition. When we attacked them then they hit us quickly on the counter and when we defended in numbers they scored wonder goals from 25 yards

Seriously? Look at his positioning for all their goals and efforts they should have scored from. He can't defend for toffee

Apologies to Nath who didn't post 1st and was very reasonable when he did.

Personally I thought Spuds were very good but at least we tried to play football and we tried to entertain. The bloke behind me kept telling the defence to hoof it and quite a few fans seemed to be hysterical when we passed around near our box but it was so much better to watch. Of course I would have preferred a positive result or a smaller loss but HB1, you really annoy me when you claim they gave up. In my opinion they looked like they were giving it a go, still trying to attack and chasing the ball until the 75th minute when both teams seemed to decide 4 0 would be the final score.

I think you make some reasonable points that I agree with, but I also think you are missing some important points.

    I agree with:
    - The four teams you mention: Burnley, Hull, Bournemouth, and West Brom all have a better team spirit / strength of character.
    - Our squad is better than Burnley, Hull, and Bournemouth - maybe not West Brom.
    - Our team could have a strong mentality in some games.

However, what I think you don't cover is the relationship between squad turnover (both players and manager), and team character. In my view, the reason why our squad is better than the teams mentioned is because we've been aggressive and successful in the transfer market, getting rid of weak players even after one season. The other teams have had less turnover, and as a result have a had a chance to build a stronger mentality - but at the cost of weaker squads.

I feel that our lack of team spirit, or whatever you want to call it, is heavily connected with the club's transfer strategy over the past few years. Obviously we all want it to improve and be unwavering, but realistically this takes time - and isn't just the fault of a manager / head coach. For me, the strategy has worked, and is working, so I don't have any real complaints. As we spend more time in the PL, stability will come and with it team cohesion and belief.

We blatantly can afford to lose next Saturday, Swansea can hardly afford to lose next Saturday (and even if they did could still see themselves survive by pipping Hull)

I agree in general with hb1. We could and probably should be more comfortable this season. However I see the injury problems and I understand that a confidence crisis or a forward losing his mojo or a defence being somewhat leaky or a captain being overweight is something that can dramatically effect a season for a club like us. And I accept it because hey ho, we survive to go again next year and hope it clicks then, even though it probably won't and we'll probably hover 5 to 10 points above safety for a while and hope newcastle or brighton turn out gash.

I'd love to have seen someone go straight through Dele Ali and end his season, he's a little rat.

We were always going to lose this heavily today, especially with Kaboul, Britos, Prodl, Behrami, Capoue & Deeney all missing from the starting 11 - you need your full string out against opponents of their quality.

As mentioned previously, it was a free swing and not season defining at all.

Win next week at home to Swansea and we're home and hosed!

TBF Robson Kanu has hardly been a regular up front for WBA (mainly they have used Rondon and Phillips)

Also built on a solid defence which we don't have.

West Ham and Palace have the likes of Arsenal/Man U and Spurs to play - are they anymore likely to beat them than we are an Everton or Leicester?

Anyway I wouldn't judge much on today really - just showed what happens when you let top players have the room to take a shot on.

I don't particularly like Mazzarri and have said on several occasions on here that I want him gone, but even I can admit that today was not his fault. He set us up to give Spurs a real run for their money, and that is what we were doing for the first half hour. Unfortunately, it didn't take long for their quality to shine through, and they overpowered us.

It wasn't Mazzarri's fault, and no one can use today as an example of mental weakness in the team. Spurs are simply a fantastic side. So let's accept it, lick our wounds and prepare for Swansea next weekend, eh?

  25. That post sums up your wooly thinking HB.

Step back and look at it, and you will see everything that people timelessly explain to you, without any fear of the message getting through. It is not an insult, it is a fact, you make an argument, and yet by doing so demonstrate your complete inability to grasp the reality of what you are saying.

All the things you say we are not, we demonstrated against the team you are holding up as a shining example to us, West Brom, who we completely dominated, whilst still being in the middle of an unsurpassed injury crisis, not even a week ago.

You make your argument, and even as you do so, you use examples that any other person may have used to demonstrate how ill-conceived and poorly thought out it was. You don't see it though, because you are completely subject to your emotions, which block out anything that stands in the way of your absolute hatred of Walter's footballing style. Even when you do have a valid point, you justify it in such a way that even people who agree with 100% end up arguing with you. That is why I say that you would argue with yourself if your name was not at the top of your posts.

100% valid opinion don't make it 100% common sense. People aren't saying you can't have the opinion, or even that 'it' has no merit. They are just, very fairly, pointing out that the argument you put for having such a view is far more weak minded and defeatist than the team have been at any point this season.

I didn't see the match because I was on a course but my spurs mate text me after about 20 mins and said our front 3 we're causing real problems. The goal by Ali was a worldie and we capitulated but the then Spurs did the same to Swansea - we have to accept they aren't the Spurs of the past 25 years.

    Forget it and move on.

We matched them for the first 20 mins. Then they turned the screw. Nothing about us sitting back on purpose. They forced us to. They're an excellent team. Currently the best in the league. They scored with four excellent strikes too which even they would be unlikely to match on a regular basis. I saw nothing at all to suggest we'd reverted to uninspiring hoof-ball and a lack of spirit. Just a continuation of the improvement of the last two home matches. Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and recognise we were well beaten by a very good team.

How good is Trippier going forward? His crosses are superlative. He doesn't even seem to need to control the ball first (normally to be advised) but just catches it right first time, every time and whips it in. He did struggle a bit defensively early on against Niang though. But having Walker and Trippier in the same squad is almost unfair.

Pochettino has quietly developed a superb team without any need for histrionics. I really hope the Spuds catch the robber-baron, bauble-boys on the other side of the city but unfortunately I doubt they will.

I enjoyed the walk in the sun between Bruce Grove and WHL. Pleasantly cosmopolitan without being tacky. Bruce's brother, Oliver, was nowhere to be seen though as was to be expected.

After the match I went to the Science Museum in South Kensington and watched the National in a boozer by the tube station there. £5.20 for a pint of cider ffs.
