    Now hang on.

I’ve never actually watched it but I’m told it’s a great film by critics

And if critics have taught me anything it is they always know best cf. Star Trek Discovery ( Hated by fans, loved by critics for its progressive (black female lead character with a mans name, gay kisses, disabled shipmates), lens flair, left wing agenda desecration of a beloved franchise) vs the Orville ( hated by critics loved by fans)

  3. Doctor Strange really not good.

I watched Burn After Reading last night which gets largely positive reviews and stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

    Awful movie.

OK it's a TV show but when Seth McaFarlane is at his best ("Ted", a lot of "Family Guy" and "The Cleveland Show" and some "American Dad") he is really, really funny and addresses a lot of salient/contemporary points. Unfortunately whenever I've seen him live/interviewed he always comes across as an extremely unsympathetic/dislikeable character. I *think* the critics thought he was going to produce an "Airplane" style parody of "Trek" (heavily influenced by "Family Guy" "best" "humour") what they got was a true-fan's "affectionate" pastiche of a much-loved show very similar to how FG portrays William Shatner's "acting".

FWIW I'm quite a fan of "Discovery" - it least it's attempting to do something a bit "different" with the Trek franchise.

EDIT Can the mods ban the OP as he/she has posted it in the wrong thread?

He does come across as annoying doesn't he, in person. But at the same time seems clever and funny in what he produces.

It's a great feel good family film in a time of world doom and gloom.

Even Trump watched it then immediately called North Korea to arrange a chat. It has that much positive energy.

Like every attempt at genuine creativity that Stephen Fry attempted, it failed miserably.

So Mr HH and I watched "The Omen" with our 12 year old at the weekend, as she wanted to watch a scary film with us. I had slight reservations as I remember being terrified watching this as a kid. At the end of the film, however, the 12 yr old had this to say: "I'm really annoyed that I just wasted 2 hrs of my time watching people fall out of windows and a weird ass child walking around - I'm not taking your device on films ever again".
So, apart from the fact that I'm guessing she would put "The Omen" in this thread, I'm also bumping it to ask if anyone has any better recommendations for a film that is scary but still 12 yr old friendly. I have already introduced her to "The Sixth Sense" and "Poltergeist" - both of which were better received.

The sixth sense was a great film. Mrs TUT didn't enjoy it so much but maybe due to the fact that I told her the ending 10 mins into the film.

I think she's wrong, incidentally. Omen is scary, though perhaps more for its atmosphere than anything specific which happens.

I saw a film called Event Horizon the other day. I thought it was going to be a straightforward sci-fi film, but in fact it's a horror film set in space. I darn near shat my shreddies whilst watching it.

I would be intrigued to hear what a 12 year old thinks about it.

The film is called Courageous and I didn't realise it was a Christian drama until about 40 minutes in. It started well, then I thought why do they keep mentioning God. It really went downhill after that.

When I watched Deepthroat I was expecting a great recounting of the Watergate scandal. I watched it through to the bitter end but disappointingly not one mention, so I watched it a couple more times to absolutely make sure.

  20. I only watched the Black Panther film a few weeks ago and was pretty unimpressed by it all.

I wondered whether it was because the marvel films are so action packed and fast paced now that we forgot how slow in the build up some of the other initial individual films were. Captain America, hulk, iron man. All slow burners in their initial outting building the characters up. Then again BP may have just been rubbish!

I too really liked the greatest showman.

Don't Look Now is one of my favourite horror films but, if memory serves correct, there is also a rather explicit love scene in the middle of it which I don't really fancy watching with the 12 year old!

Ah yes, another one of my favourites. Not sure if this would be too similar in feel to "The Omen" but will try it, just so I get to watch it again.

I'll let you know straight after I've had the conversation with Social Services about what the 12 yr old thought about it ;)

We're also planning a "Sean Bean for president" campaign as we speak.

Disagree. Over-long maybe, could have cut out 10,000 of the bullets that magically missed the heroes, but a brilliant and clever idea, and once you got down to dreams within dreams it was very smart indeed.

I can put up with almost anything in a film. No matter how bad a film is, I pretty much never stop the film without finishing it.

    Two exceptions:

Cannibal Holocaust - the directors cut. Abysmal. There was literally no storyline whatsoever.

Couples Retreat was also terrible, because it wasn't so bad that it was actually quite entertaining (i.e. Sharknado). It was a Hollywood cliche with absolutely no redeeming features.

It's like a lot of "classics." Sure it was revolutionary satire when it came out, but people pretending to find it funny nowadays are lying to themselves.
