It's rather sad. To win at all costs. Sporting bodies need to clamp down on gamesmanship. Camara was a disgrace yesterday as well. A month ban, a personal fine and a fine for the manager as well. As Clough said. You would soon find managers telling their players not to surround referees, not to swear and not to roll around on the floor like lawnmowers.

Pogba is so far up his own backside to take penalties like that. Good to see him miss again but got lucky with the rebound.

Wasn't much of a foul I believe either?

    Penalty "won" is the suggestion..

Dumb challenge but Marital did indeed propel himself through the air to make sure the ref knew. No 2nd yellow either (which I agree with) but sums up refereeing inconsistency.

  6. I think the points needed to survive this year are going to be a lot lower. There seems to be a bottom 8 developing. The bottom 8 after 10 games last season had amassed 69 points between then, an average of 8.6 pts per club. This year it is 47 points, or 5.9 pts per club. If you extrapolate, that is 23 points over a season. I can see Hudds, Newcastle, Cardiff struggling to get past 20.

It get's to the point that I think Martial should be booked and the penalty decision overturned when it's so obvious that he's embellished the foul.

It was a penalty but going down like that is a shameless attempt to force the refereeing into a decision and is unsporting conduct; a player should try to play on to the best of their ability. I think it is akin to handling the ball when you think you have been fouled just to coerce the referee into blowing the whistle.

Talking of refereeing inconsistencies, I'd like to know why Jon Moss felt compelled to show Kabasele a second yellow card for the penalty against Bournemouth early in the match, yet did not produce a second yellow card to either Gueye or Smalling for tackles which led to penalties.

I can understand inconsistencies between different officials, but it was Jon Moss on all three occasions. It's ridiculous and just plain wrong, that a referee can destroy a match on a whim, like he did in the Watford game. There was no reason for him to give different outcomes. It's either always a yellow card, or never a yellow card. You cannot give different punishments for the same situation based on nothing more than how you are feeling at the time.

Same reason for footballers and managers do different things in the same situation...

    And people generally in life!

I suppose its a good example of where the ref could come out and explain his different opinions if allowed to.

Kabasele made the foul with the foward driving directly toward goal and its likely that a goalscoring chance was denied. Richarlison today was felled at pace with the best outcome for Everton being he manages to get a cross in the box to nobody. No two fouls are the same.

I'm sure there can be a pathetic excuse made to account for this, like Kabasele was standing on a different blade of grass than Smalling or Gueye, but fundamentally, giving a penalty is awarding a team a goal scoring opportunity, not denying one.

It's a rule that needs to be cleared up. The crime of giving away a penalty has to be always a yellow card or never one. If you leave it up to a referee, then he can influence things unfairly depending on how he feels at the time. In the spirit of fairness and for the good of the game, you have to take away as much interpretation away from officials as possible. Just like taking off your shirt in goal celebration or kicking the ball away, is a compulsory yellow. I would say offences in the penalty area, which is a foul and a penalty, but not a dangerous tackle should never be a yellow card. Only a direct red card can be given for dangerous play.

But who decides what a dangerous tackle is? - I mean we saw one last week by Kompany v Burnley which was only a booking.

Someone for Fulham kicked the ball away yesterday and wasn't booked...

Even if rules are set in stone it doesn't seem like they are always applied very well.

Basically your saying a ref shouldn't be allowed to make a decision which might affect the game - may as well not have them on the pitch then!?

If a penalty is awarded I do not think a YELLOW card should be given as well, however if the foul is bad enough that a RED card is warranted then so be it, but a penalty should be punishment enough for a foul in the box that would normally attract a YELLOW card.

Martial would have through on goal with a better angle than King against us my view. They are either both yellows or neither is.

I thought there use to be a rule that when taking a penalty you couldn't break your step, looks like that went out the window a long time ago, its bad sportsmanship and wouldn't have happened in Sir Bobby Charlton's day I wonder what he thinks about it?

    Or SAF.

No wonder the great man got rid of Pogba. He makes self indulgence an art form.

He sells shirts though. Under SAF and David Gill, that wasn’t important, because they were successful and that made people buy the shirts.

I don’t like Pogba for the fact that he clearly has talent and chooses to cruise through his career and rarely show it. Like Kyrigos in tennis. One wonders how good he could be if Guardiola got hold of him.

United have been in the garment trade since the days of Cantona 7 & Beckham 7.

It would be hilarious if the most successful aspect of United’s season was Pogba’s shirt sales.

I saw someone rake their studs down the back of Sterling’s leg. Very similar to the Capoue/Zaha incident.

What happened? Absolutely nothing. Sterling got up and played on. commentators didn’t say too much about it and there certainly was not the hysteria over it as there was when Capoue did this.

I doubt it will be referred to afterwards, and certainly will not be talked about as being the worst foul in the history of the game.

I just hate these constant double standards.

Well the media hate Sterling so they'll probably blame him in some way !

Just watching MNF with Neville and Carragher.

They had a small bit about the two surprise packages in Watford and Bournemouth. Neville spoke about Watford first, with the back drop being our goals from Saturday. He said some nice things, but it was just the usual stuff. "Watford are a clever club with multiple ownerships".....then he went on to say about changing their manager and players every season. He also said Watford always have good strikers, that do unexpected things (probably he's surprised they score goals). He then embarrassingly ran out of things to say before the clip of Success' goal ended, and the anchor man had to interrupt with a nervous laugh just to break the silence and he covered it up with "you never know what you're going to get with these two".

They then showed a clip of Henry v Liverpool and Pereyra's goal side to side and they were virtually identical. At the time I'm sure Henry's goal was referred to as being a wonder goal full of amazing skill, whereas Pereyra's was down to poor Huddersfield defending.

Then they went on to Bournemouth, with the piece being twice as long over them and ended up being an Eddie Howe love in. Carragher called them "brilliant", whereas they just said "fair play to them" when talking about Watford.

Reading between the lines, it seems that there is a genuine admiration of Bournemouth, and begrudging credit to Watford, who appear to be succeeding in a way they don't really like. I think that pretty much sums up 90% of the attitude for the entire media/pundits.

And long may that continue. Increased media interest leads to more pressure and interest in our players. Far happier to just do things well and quietly. Who cares what the media think.

The thing is with the “you never know what you’re going to get” statement, we’re 3 points behind Arsenal who have just come off a 10 game winning streak. The point I’m trying to make is, actually more often than not this season you’ll get a very good performance from us, hence why both us and muff are doing so well and why they raised the point in the first place. We’ve had the one bad game in 10, we still haven’t always won but we’ve got 2 points per game.

It just seems a very lazy way to analyse our good start by basically saying we’re inconsistent, when in reality we’re clearly more consistent than 14 other teams in the league.

It's annoying when we don't get recognition we deserve. Is our success down to strikers, no it's our great midfield and do we constantly change players, no not really. Written press far more in the know about what we are about.

“You never know what you’re going to get with these two” was a reference to Carragher and Neville. Neville just ran out of things to say about Watford mid-way through, as if the well of his knowledge on Watford had dried up completely after 25 seconds. He just sat there in complete silence and it was an awkward moment, which was laughed off.

That's really the only thing that annoys me. I pay for sky. I pay my TV licence. These pundits are paid good money to do a job.

All I want is some indepth, insightful discussion and information.

I suspect it's not a deliberate bias. They are just lazy. If the information about us is clichéd and recycled then I imagine it's the same for the others outside the top 6. Even the chat about the Muff is just about St Eddie and how plucky they are. No analysis of the number of penalties they "win" or their constant badgering of the ref to get players sent off.

I just don't bother with the TV "analysis anymore. The mute button is your friend.

    Precisely.
I compare this to the tennis commentators. Almost all of them will have in depth knowledge of ALL of the players in the top 100;their strengths, weaknesses, results, shot selections etc.
They will also have a good knowledge of the next 200 players.
It's just lazy and a nod to the audience they cater for, that is to say 'Top 6' fans.

Possibly not the correct thread but I wanted to mention the death of a fine journalist,David Meek.
A wonderful writer and I highly recommend his account of the 1958 Munich disaster, published I think in 1983.
