GT broke the transfer record on 3 occasions, Wooter, Helguson and, after relegation, Nielsen (with Baardsen too)

Yes we did a Norwich twice as you say. Also post relegation but pre Vialli, GT spent a packet on Nielsen and Baardsen both from spurs but as you say little the year before immediately after promotion. TBF when promoted under Pozzo we didn't spend much in that first season. Lots of changes to the squad but reasonably cheaply. Gray, Sarr, GD etc came later.

I’m going off on a bit of a tangent here, but although project big picture had many faults there were some aspects of it I’d like to see implemented (but they never will be).

The difference in money between 20th and 21st place is just ridiculously huge. It creates a situation where relegation is a such crushing disaster for everyone, when it shouldn’t be that bad. I wouldn’t be against reducing the PL to 18 teams and scrapping parachute payments if it meant winning the championship got you something like £60m, then maybe £55m for second and so on. I think I’d enjoy football a lot more if getting relegated was more of normal thing and not the end of the world, and getting promoted was more a question of sporting achievement rather than money.

Presumably it would then be easier to run a football club, the monetary incentive would be great enough that you’d quickly drop down the leagues if you didn’t invest enough, but equally it’s not such a stark choice between getting promoted and doing precisely nothing, or gambling on the clubs future to stay up.

I think you will find he broke it more than three times, Steve Sims and Luther are two that immediately spring to mind!

NB I have just read the previous posts and see the content to the statement wasn’t talking about GT in his entirety WFC career!

I think Ray Train too for £50k before he bought Sims. Maybe even Stirk for £30k before that (or maybe that’s what Jenkins cost ?).

Yes remember (although not a GT purchase) David Woodfield at £27,500 back in 1971

Yes I was responding to GT's season in the Premier League in 99/00 and the subsequent purchase of Nielsen.

I think Jenkins cost about that, but surely he was bought before Taylor?

And wasn't Woodfield irreparably injured in his first match for us?

That's right I don't think he even made half time! they tried to cut their losses by making him coach, but it all went wrong when he spilt a pot of paint over himself and turned up for training looking like a Belisha Beacon!

Of course I want us to win, but it's usually a draw against Muff. That would still take us second all be it temp - we are not going to win every game from now till May. IF we can be unbeaten from now till May we will almost
certainly make top two. I cannot see Brentford, Swansea and Norwich not losing at least a few till the end. Just a thought that's all. :D

I think I saw him playing on the Lye Lane pitch in Bricket Wood when I was a little girl, possibly 1973. I could be wrong but it was definitely an ex Watford player.
Back to the present and I'm slightly concerned that Solanke is starting.
I hope they have rushed him back too early.
Need to be fully on our game.
    Do not take them lightly.

I only saw a few minutes of the game, but saw him throw himself to the ground twice trying to get free kicks. Cheating xxxx

Yes that’s what I meant. If he cost £30k then Stirk wasn’t a record.

How many goals do Stoke need for us to go 2nd?

Just the 6. Saying that this would be a brilliant result for us as we are at home to Wycombe which we should win at The Vic and Brentford have Norwich in midweek.

Swansea have had 14 shots to BC's 1. It's only a matter of time I'm afraid.

BC are level. Just one goal for Stoke and another for BC would be all so sweet.

  30. The autos have gone. What’s happening is largely irrelevant now. We’ve thrown so many points away that we needed to be in ‘ if can’t win must not lose’ mode. Which we’ve screwed up. We’ll carry along as we’ve been going and pick up enough to come 3rd or 4th. A very frustrating, disappointing, season of stupidity that will culminate in this team being broken up.

Spot on. Four wins on the spin didn’t even get us in to the auto spots and we were never going to keep winning. As soon as we played a semi competent team we bottled it. There was slim hope for a while it was turning out like the Joka season with us building in to form, but it isn’t. Like you say we’ll finish 3/4 no problem, but nothing more than that.
