    Marathon Cilic v Batista Agut.
    Last match for Caroline Wozniacki.

The ladies seeds took a battering !

    Mind you probably no surprise.

Raonic out plays Tsitsi who looked tight from the beginning.
    Bad week for Bassett!

Emotional goodbye for Caroline Wozniacki. Charming lady and really made the most of her career.
I've never seen Ons Jabeur play so well. So smooth, great variety, proper serve and crunching early strike forehands. Impressive.
Nadal to possibly play Kyrgios if the Aussie beats Khachanov. Tjiem,Rublev and Monfils all through.

Another late night 5 set battle for a local favourite.

Finally an Aussie wins through in a last set tie break (the 4th one overall in the match)

No love loss between Kyrgios and Nadal either!

Kyrgios can be a twerp but he's usually spot as far as Nadal is concerned, just as Benneteau was on Federer a year or so back.

  8. I Blame Pozzo

Ons Jabeur wins again against Wang.
Raonic continues and defeats Cilic in straight sets.
The daftly named Tennys Sandgren wins a stunning match point to beat Fabio in four.

  9. I Blame Pozzo

    I Blame Pozzo First Team

    Nadal in four v Kyrgios.
    Federer in five v Sandgren.
Barty beats Kvitova and Kenin beats Jabeur.
Zverev finds form to beat the previously undefeated in 2020,Rublev.
Hoddesdon 40s beat Letchworth, they of the spat in the summer,8-0. No black squirrels alas.

Federer still has that fight in him then saving 7 match points but it's going to take a lot out of him.

Djokovic will easily win their semi final.

Federer did beat Djokovic at the O2 in November though. The guy is an absolute genius and still getting to a semi-final Grand Slam at his age. It's unbelievable. I wouldn't put anything past him.

Hard to deny his pedigree but Federer, like the Williams sisters, has played a limited schedule for at least 10 years, reducing his tournaments to a bare minimum.
Sandgren choked horribly on five of those match points. I doubt Federer will get a set, especially given his injury and as Cash said,he played the injury rule to the maximum.
Zverev into his first major semi final. If he wins he will donate all his prize money to the appeal. He is already giving $A 10,000 per win.
Halep plays Muguruza in the bottom half of the ladies.
Martina and McEnroe in hot water with Tennis Australia for their pro Evonne Goolagong, anti Margaret Court protest.

Australians going to get a home winner for the first time in a while?

Finally Zverev living up to his hype in a major event.

Thiem serving for the match - Nadal breaks!

Is that the young Austrian's chance gone?

Kenin and Muga in the final.

Federer started well it seems but Djokovic too strong in the end.

Who will he face in the final ?

I wish Roland Garros didn't exist, or at least it wasn't on clay. I truly cannot stand Nadal, and if that slam was on anything other than clay you'd likely have nadal with 5/6 less slams and Djokovic and Federer on another 2 or 3 each, miles ahead of him. So boo to RG.

Nadal is obviously a brilliant tennis player, but he is a clay court player, and the worst all rounder and least versatile of the three, in my opinion. I'd find it extremely irritating if he ends up top of the slams table come the end all the big threes careers.

    Why worry?
Appreciate them all, they're all magnificent in differing ways.
RG is an immense test of a player, the hardest surface to win on by far. I don't especially like watching Rafa but he is to be admired,if only for winning so many at RG and on all surfaces.
Djokovic looks like he can surpass Federer.
Dismal, dismal re invention of the junior programme today by LTA at Batchwood.
Isla, who looked as if she should be on 'Blue Peter' and said "tremendous" every third word. A lady who looked like Megan Rapino,Guy Thingy, who's turned into Freddie Star,Julie Pullin, who just looked bemused and Lord Elpus,Sam Richardson, who seemed not to have slept for a month.
Nigel Long, as camp as a row of tents, did at least treat the whole shambles with the derision it deserved.
Be very afraid for tennis in this country when the federation re hash weak ideas by using red and blue wrist bands and buckets.
Coup d'etat is required, not to mention misplaced apostrophes.
    Sad.

Another first time winner in Kenin.

Showing that no lady is going to dominate like the Williams sisters used to ..

Is that a good thing or shows a lack of consistency in the ranks of the WTA?

  26. I Blame Pozzo

    I Blame Pozzo First Team

I think a lot of the ladies under performed this tournament. Barty,Svitolina.Plliskova,Halep wasn't great against Muga. Not a good tournament all round for WTA.
I 've no idea why Jamie Murray was snide towards his box his the post match speech. Very odd.

Jamie used to be fairly sensible but in the last few years he has shown a very arrogant streak.
In the DC doubles whilst partnering Dom Inglot he was clearly having a go at his partner and showing disapproval. It went down very badly within the team. Very poor to show your partner up like that,it can only do harm.
Thiem has broken back and the first set is back on serve.
Hoddesdon play W Herts later. We need three sets to win the league with a match to spare.
There will be three Watford season ticket holders playing so it will not be overly joyful!

Joe Salisbury wins doubles with Ram.
Hoddesdon defeat W Herts to win 40s league with a match to go.
Im off to tutor training at the NTC and joy of joy it's more buckets and sweatbands!
    I may leave by 11am!

    DON"T PANIC!
Participation down by 25% on last year,68% of coaches feel the governing body is failing.
The man who 'invented' the new junior programme was over from Belgium, probably on 100k as a consultant and presented as if he'd found a cure for cancer, dementia and anything else you care to mention.
Sarah Wallace from Parklangley gave an excellent presentation on pre performance but the young Scottish shrink girl was dull.
Tennis is up s*** street and major tournament running apart, the federation are doing nothing well.
Good luck to Jo Ward,a former Middlesex colleague of mine, who is in charge of course content for tutors but she'll need Heraklean strength to fight the half wits that surround her.
New lavatories in the NTC though.so that's ok!
Jo Konta practising on acrylic when she supposedly has a knee problem. Odd.

I went to a fight and a mixed match broke out!
As Ciara swirled around, Hoddesdon played Welwyn.
Midway through the second set of the first match their man,Jack aged approximately 19 or 20,strolled up to the net.
"You do know you're foot faulting don't you?" he said to Barrie my partner. Barrie had just hit a service winner against Louise, the lady. "She can't get them because you're inside the baseline" Jack continued.
"she can't get them because she's a woman attempting to rerun a man's serve in mixed" I replied.
    Barrie said,not without sarcasm "I'll stand back a bit,shall I?"
At this juncture their other man,Michael a very bumptious twerp who had been overly pious the previous year, piped up.Then when my partner on the day threw his racket and it bounced and hit Louise, who he was partnering

he said "Well technically that's our match". I told him I knew the rules of tennis and if that's what he wanted then off we go. He then declined so I told him to get on with it then!
On this occasion he told me "I've known Jack a long time and he didn't mean anything". I replied that I didn't care he his father knew Lloyd George,it was none of his business.
We continued but Barrie was still seething and the next game Louise put up a feeble lob and Barrie tagged Jack with a meaty smash. I went to fetch another ball to serve with and when I came back the two men were squaring up to each other down the Welwyn end and had to be separated by Chris our other man!
I haven't seen the 'foot fault trick' used for a long time but these sort of mind games are taught at various clubs and centres throughout the nation.
    I quite enjoyed it really!

My brother Laurence said I should write a book about all the goings on in tennis.
Given the state of the game and the likelihood of me turning into Victor Meldrew,I may just do it!
