GB take advantage of a very kind draw.
The Magic Box was pulsating last night as Rafa and Marcel Granoellers beat Mayer and Gonzales.
Can't see anything other than a Spain win but I've certainly been wrong before!
Russia play Canada in the other half. Khachanov and Rublev defeat Troicki and Djokovic in an epic third set tie break.
Frankly Zimonjic should have selected himself as Djokovic is a dreadful doubles player, considering his singles ability and Troicki usually chokes.

    Canada through beating Russia 2-1.
Edmund beats Lopez as Spain appear to be running out of players.
    However they still have Nadal!

  3. I Blame Pozzo

    I Blame Pozzo First Team

    Nadal beats Dame Edith 4&0.
Evans played very well, mixing it up with skill but ran out of gas and that was that.

    Nadal 2
    GB 1
Jamie Murray's dreadful volley technique proves costly in the end.
    Skupski played very well throughout.
Spain favourites tomorrow, especially if Batista Agut returns.

Shame for GB - one too many mistakes I gusss .

Spain played better on the big points, considering how poorly both Lopez and Nadal returned.
Clever selection by Bruguera to play Lopez ,thus removing Murray's favourite return, the lob over server's partner.
Lopez serves and smashes brilliantly, one overhead in the second tie break apart!

Canada select Felix Auger Aliassime in the second singles.
He loeses to Roberto Batista Agut in the battle of the three man midfields.
Good for RBA after his sad news.
Spirited effort by Shapovalov but Nadal wins 3&6.
Canada will win this within two years you would think.

Kosmos,Gerard Pique's company have raised 2.2 billion for 20 years of Davis Cup.
Nadal and Djokovic had 1m appearance money from them, aside from what their federations paid them.
Not sure it's sustainable at that rate. Pique didn't looked overly chuffed at the final. Crowds, understandably, were thin if Spain weren't playing.

I've just received a cv of sorts from a young lad from India.

It appears tennis coaches are now sending cakky YouTube videos of themselves to wild narcotic music.

    Good grief!

Big match today in the NPL ladies.
    Hazelwood v Sutton.

    I Blame Pozzo First Team

A 3-1 defeat for the Hazelwood NPL team but that tells nothing.
Jane and I had a match point at 6-5 in the second set on Jane's serve and I missed a high forehand volley, that I lost slightly in the dome lights. I woke up at 4am thinking about it! Baa and Fran had three match points in the match tie break, also in the first round,so we could have been 2 up.
However it was great tennis and as the oldest player in their team was 27 and the youngest in ours 42,we felt as ok as you can do about such a narrow loss.
I'd like to pay tribute all my colleagues who have played an incredible amount of tennis this year for Hazelwood,Hoddesdon and they, for Middlesex.
For Middlesex they have won the national 35s and 40s tournaments. For Hazelwood we won the national 40s club competition.
They are an inspiration to play with for their skill, grace, endeavour, humility, humour and love of the game. they have done wonders for my game,I need to be reaching a great level just to make the team.
The captain of Sutton would do well to take a leaf from their book, chippy girl* who constantly moaned at calls and appeared keen to claim the moral high ground in a dispute that wasn't even on her court! Decent player but just because you're captain it doesn't make you a deity. I would never have guessed she was a teacher!
    * or lady!

He is in a no win situation.
He needs to play more and win more often to regain a decent ranking. However the more he plays the more burden he places on his hip and connected areas.
Great dedication to return but I expect this year to be his last as a singles player.
He could continue on the doubles tour for a few years as no lateral movement required,at least not to the degree he needs for his game style in singles.

I guess this won't take too much out of Djokovic and Nadal - probably just replaces another tournament they might have played in?

    This is frightening:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/51100706

A Slovenian player had to retire having gone in to a coughing fit during the Australian Open qualifiers because of poor air quality. With the main event about to start and the residents of Melbourne told to stay indoors whenever possible you can't have the tournament going ahead to the detriment of players' health.

it should be cancelled now and the prize money given to the appeal fund.
