My perspective is that if you're deliberately trying to injure someone, it's not a tackle. Roy Keane wasn't engaging in a bad tackle, he was being a vicious vindictive thug, pure and simple. Of course, differentiating between a legitimate badly timed challenge/terrible tackle and a deliberate intent to injure is very difficult. Frankly, Keane got off far too lightly (something I doubt anyone would disagree with) and his offense was clearly far worse than Suarez's bite. On a different note, I agree with the earlier point about preferring to get bitten than a broken leg, but I don't think the majority of broken legs are caused on purpose. Furthermore, you don't punish culprits based off what the victim would have preferred to happen to them. The point is that the intent to hurt was there, and that's what should be punished. In Suarez's case, it can't be denied. In Keane's case it was harder to prove; frankly if he'd have kept his mouth shut in his book (idiot), he'd have gotten away with it. Keane's offense was clearly far worse but both of them deserved to be severely punished. On a similar note, Suarez also deserved a worse punishment than Shawcross got for accidentally breaking Wilshire's leg, even though Shawcross technically did more damage.
Yep, I pretty much agree. Intent is the important factor for me. The difficulty comes when trying to define when a tackle is reckless.
This was Gordon Strachan's take on it when Chiles started his pre match sermons: "We give Uruguay stick about defending [Suarez], but every manager defends his player. People talk about morals – we don’t have any morals in football. Let’s get that right.Over the years I have played there has been wife-batterers (Lee Chapman), drink-driving incidents, infidelity, Eric Cantona jumping into the crowd and kung-fu-ing someone in the chest. The clubs stand by them. The supporters themselves, when these guys come back, they stand up and applaud them on the pitch. So don’t anybody start talking about morals – we don’t have any in football. If these things had been done by youth team players – who don’t have any importance to the first team – they get sacked. But because they can bring in merchandise and bring in money, then they will back them to the hilt.” Around the world the press have also been condemnatory but not to the extent here in the British press. Even Chiellini has called the ban rather harsh. Oddly enough the media were rather quiet when Defoe bit Mascherano. People like Shearer should also remember that they are not whiter than white when it comes to on the pitch behaviour i.e kicking someone in the head before they also start sermonizing on what is quite clearly unacceptable behaviour on the football field.
Did they Nascot ? I generally avoid the pre match rambling, half time and post match musings. Did Shearer maintain a straight face under all the woodstain ?
I remember there being a lot of outrage over Defoe and it being all over the back pages but the FA's hands were tied as the ref had seen it and dealt with it during the game.
Liverpool deserve to be punished just as much as Uruguay, both teams have consistently rallied around this animal, excusing his behaviour and fuelling his paranoia
I'm unhappy with the lack of duration of the ban. This sort of thing isn't business as usual. On a personal level, he needs help and I don't think there is any hope of him getting it. I'm surprised Chiellini didn't knock his teeth in, but then again I said the same thing about Ivanovic, too.
So he's apologised for biting Chiellini, but not apologised for lying to the media, his teammates, manager, fans, supporters etc. In the first place. Ok then... He's also assured that it'll never happen again. I can only assume he said the same thing after the previous two incidents. When you do something that is wrong again and again, apologies are so hollow.
FFS, he only bit someone on the shoulder. It's not like he fiddled kids or planted anti-personnel landmines all over a village. I think he's been screwed.
An article doing the rounds online yesterday said he had agreed a deal with Barcelona which was conditional on him making a full public apology for his bite. Low and behold the very next day he totally changes his stance and apologises.
What's the betting his first game back will be Barca v Liverpool in the Champions League (if they can draw each other)!
