I'm beginning to regret my decision to take my 9 year old to his first away game at West Ham in a couple of weeks.

    Just back. My thoughts:
    * Pre-match warm up saw Watson pinging the ball wide for Richi/Hole & Carillo/Janmaat to combine before the ball was whipped in. Saw diddly squat of it happening during the game.
    * Richi (esp 1st half) was getting stuck in and trying to create. Did his best to dispel his emoji nonsense.
    * Surely Carrillo & Capoue's last games in a Watford shirt?
    * We ran around like headless chickens at times. Javi's reputation as an organiser much needed.
    * Pleased Javi could see what's needed in a cup game and not when 3 points are at stake. We've got him now for the rest of the season so may as well support him.
    * The rancid ferals who abused Kaba & Holebas don't belong at our club. Feck off and support L***n you scummers.

    Totally agree with this.

I was at the match, in Row Y (so nice and dry apart from the occasional big drip from the roof) in the section immediately next to the Southampton fans. Yes, the quality of football was dire and Watford were hopeless and, yet again, frustratingly static. The team looked like a group of individuals cobbled together for the first time. I was at Brighton before Christmas and thought that was bad but yesterday was another step down in quality from that. For the first time in over 35 years of supporting Watford, I had to leave early to catch my train as I needed to be home by 7pm. My initial disappointment had turned to relief by the time I had to leave 10 minutes before the end.
But I was shocked at our fans' response. This team, as you said Harrow, looks absolutely shot of confidence which isn't an excuse but does impact the players' performances. Obviously us fans are disappointed and frustrated and conceding a goal so early in the match doesn't help. But I can't remember the last time I went to a match when the fans were basically on the team's back for the entire match. I like a bit of gallows humour and chants like "you're nothing special, we lose every week", aimed back at the Southampton "river island" contingent of gobby fans, were amusing. But actually all the chants seemed to be of that ilk - there was hardly any positive noise from the fans. No wonder the players look terrified of the ball - any mistake made is leaped on by the crowd. I am not suggesting we should all be "happy clappers" 100% of the time but I do believe that there needs to be some balance and perspective. Players and managers always say what a difference positive noise from the fans makes and I'm sure the opposite is also true. The atmosphere was probably the worse one at an away match that I can remember. Oh, and a special mention to the two middle aged Watford fans a couple of rows in front of me (man who looked like a zz top reject with bald head and big beard; and woman with glasses and red painted nails) who decided not to watch the match at all but instead spent the entire game turned towards the Southampton fans trying to goad them by doing lots of very hard things like flicking v signs at them. Classy.

It really does make you wonder why some people bother to attend.
Who on earth could believe such behaviour can help our predicament?
Trust me it's difficult enough playing any sport when you are low on confidence, without imbecilic utterances from half cut dim wits.
Let's hope these creeps reflect on their abysmal behaviour and refrain in future, but I doubt it.

We have to get new players in - who knows how that's going - but we don't have to get rid of the useless ones if we can't find takers. Gino could take the financial hit and DjeDje them

When behaviour crosses a line, unacceptable.

But like Watson said after the game, fans have a right to be angry and to air their grievances. They pay a lot of money and the players would do well to remember that.

The players aren’t just going to suddenly grow in confidence randomly one day so they will have to call on their footballing ability and too many of them are displaying a lack of desire to do that for the cause at the moment so they have to expect the criticism that comes with it.

Footballers are generally showered with adoration by supporters. And are happy to accept that. Fans will only turn when performances levels become unacceptable and that is what is happening.

Low on confidence isn’t an excuse. So were Southampton. So were Swansea. So were Everton. So were Palace. So were Huddersfield. Any fan who crossed the line yesterday is a total imbecile but on the whole, I think the fans have been extremely loyal to the team in recent weeks. Yesterday was unacceptable by the players and they were told.

Meh! has started another thread about getting behind the team - and I wholeheartedly agree. I and I’m sure everyone else goes along to support the team from minute 1 of every game and will continue to do so long as the effort warrants it. When I see players letting themselves down with little to no desire to change that fact, then I believe they should be let know that we see it. Playing the game they love and wanting to do it at the top level should be all the motivation they need to regain confidence.

I don’t mind losing - I’m a Watford fan, it happens 50% of the time. I only ask that they try. And although we have lost many games recently and badly, I’ve seen effort from some. Yesterday I saw very little across the board.

Exactly the situation we find ourselves in. Deeney is the only possible outgoing I can see. And we shouldn’t be letting that happen ironically.

Gino needs to take a financial hit until the summer to give us the best chance of staying up.

I do broadly agree that we the fans should stay supporting the team and it was disappointing yesterday to hear the gallows humour getting out of hand towards the end. However those criticising the fans on here must accept that the support was very positive at the start of the match and it was as a result of us very quickly realising, not just because of the goal, that the players’ attitude was not right (too slow, no movement etc.). Then it was doubly disappointing that there seemed to be no change in attitude at the start of the second half, despite some early and apparently positive substitutions. There still seemed to be no prospect of Watford scoring, so it was hardly surprising that the atmosphere changed for the worse.

Did all the players come over?

I know that isn't always the case...

Probably didn't help Holebas was the one being abused - he is always likely to react to something I feel.

Maybe Kabasele had a bad game yesterday but not sure generally he deserves stick - one of the few who probably really cares about the club I feel.

One positive from yesterday - with about 20 minutes to go and us playing gash, the Southampton manager thought it sensible to take a forward off, bring on a centre back and go to a back five, which suggests he might just be incompetent enough to ensure that Saints take up one of the relegation places

Both of you are surely highlighting stuff that is the responsibility of the coaching staff. (?). Is Watson (who has a dressing-room reputation as a thinker about the game) dithering or are the runners-off-the-ball dithering? Defensive set-ups against set pieces have been criticised all season long. Gracia has his work cut out and very little time to do it in.

It's quite ironic for Kabasele to say "we're not lying down". Remember Bournemouth away last season? I bet Holebas said the same after Huddersfield as well no doubt.

To listen to some of you anyone would think we at in last place in the league and 10 points adrift. OK I freely admit our results of late have been abysmal and action needed to be taken, however, just take time out and remember the players we have had out through injury. Our defence has been decimated and to loose both Chalobah and Hughes when both were starting to look impressive has left our midfield sadly depleted.
To talk of bringing players in to increase competition for places is nonsense, when our injured players return we will have a much stronger squad available and I have every confidence that results will improve. Only the medical team know when this might be, and if this is not going to be until the end of the season then we need to bring in greater depth to the squad to avoid being left high and dry if we sustain further injuries.

So let me see if I have this right?

To suggest bringing in new players is stupid because we may have injured players coming back. But if we don’t get players back, we need to bring in new players?

We have burnt through a lot of games whilst waiting for injured players to return. Every game is key now and we can no longer wait. The injury update suggests it is a couple of weeks at least before we see any of them back near the first team. Then it seems we may get another back ever couple of weeks after that. And all of them will be required to hit the ground running?!

We can’t sit on our hands anymore hoping this will improve. New additions are needed of required first team quality and it is not nonsense to suggest that.

I arrived home this afternoon to find it has been a lovely sunny day for skiing.
Having had time to digest the game yesterday and reading the threads on the site.
I don't agree that the fans were overly abusive towards the players. I do agree that the swearing towards Kabasele and Holebas in front of small kids, who were probably real pleased to see the players close up, was out of order.
The chanting from the stands was funny and correct. The team were awful, l mean dreadful. The worst performance l can remember. Many fans are saying the same thing. There wasn't anything else to enjoy, so the sarcastic chants were appreciated.
My partner came to the game with me and she is not really a fan of football. Even she laughed when a shot from Sinclair went out for a throw in. She made many comments in French about the performance, mostly associated with the toilet routine..
I watch local children most days practise Slalom and Downhill on the Massif De L'Etale. If they don't make the grade to get to the next level, then they are dropped. These kids are chasing the dream of representing La Clusaz/France in the FIS. The prize money is peanuts in the FIS. Even at 13/14 yrs of age these kids make the tourist skiers looks like Ben Watson did yesterday.
They are caning downhill at 60+mph and they make it look like they are out for a Sunday stroll. One slip and it could be all over for them. I see Holebas and Capoue strolling around yesterday, arms waving in the air and just looking like they could not care at all. It makes me want to put them on to a set of skis and send them downhill. Let them see what fear, speed and the desire to stay upright really feels like.
Nearly all of the fans yesterday could never reach the level of any of the Watford players, by any margin. On a Sunday morning many will be on the muddy pitches of the Watford Sunday League giving their all for their team and paying for the privilege. So their right to chant at how Watford play is just frustration and anger.
Long may that right continue in my opinion.
