Statistics don't lie and it can only be denied for so long.

Us smokers are immune to the virus. When it's looking for a home, it likes nice clean, pink & healthy, prurient jogger lungs and turns its nose up at our wheezy, tar-coated, shrivelled up old black limp balloons.

France is trying out nicotine patches to see if that'll help save the joyless finger-wagging non-smokers, but more in hope than expectation. It's not the nicotine that does it, it's the whole caboodle. The complete oily rag from tip to filter.

Of course it's not fair to expect everyone to smoke. We know very well and richly from experience that there are some who are very opposed. Who wave their little jewel encrusted and manicured fingers in front of their little turned up nose and make "poo poo" noises or do extravagant coughing (admittedly not so much these days). We cannot FORCE such strident opponents of rich, satisfying tobacco to smoke it, that would be wrong.

However, to be fair to the rest of us who responsibly answer our country's call in its moment of need and heroically and selflessly take up the free government baccy, fags, cigars and pipes distributed at every street corner, they must make the sacrifice and stay strictly quarantined away at home. For their own good and to save them from infecting the rest of us.

Only until a suitable vaccine can be found at some later date to be announced. And we won't let them suffer. After pumping their porches full of special safety anti-Covid Golden Virginia smoke, we'll drop off a goody box for them every so often. With food and 20 Bensons just in case they want to stop being anti-social and see sense.

Of course, we will need proper policing and on the spot fines for anyone not puffing at least 20 a day, not inhaling properly or not having yellow enough fingers.

Great news, a mixture of boredom and worry has seen me lapse after three years smoke free. (except for matchdays and nights on the lash obviously)

Great stuff I’ll get back on the Marlboro lights.

They’re called Marlboro Gold now grandad! Something to do with them not being allowed to market ciggies as being ‘light’, as in lower in tar and a ‘healthier’ option.

I’m toying with buying rolling tobacco, it’s been so long and would feel like fully accepting becoming a smoker again. To me 20 straights feel like a cheeky little cheat while I can still claim to have quit to my missus (which of course it isn’t).

  6. How does this chime with air pollution making the symptoms worse?
It would be interesting to see the stats on 'less likely to catch' vs 'more likely to die when you do'...

It's not the same thing - the point seems to be that it's the nicotine, rather than the smoke, which is suspected of helping to alleviate symptoms; hence why some French doctors have just started a trial on patients using nicotine patches:

"The renowned French neurobiologist Jean-Pierre Changeux, who reviewed the study, suggested the nicotine might stop the virus from reaching cells in the body preventing its spread. Nicotine may also lessen the overreaction of the body’s immune system that has been found in the most severe cases of Covid-19 infection.

The findings are to be verified in a clinical study in which frontline health workers, hospital patients with the Covid-19 virus and those in intensive care will be given nicotine patches."

I gave up 8 years ago, having started at around the age of 15. I’ve gone full circle as I found myself, during this lockdown, buying a “pouch” for my 16 year old (which she will pay me back for; I’m not funding the habit). I was a Marlboro, then Marlboro Light, then finally Silk Cut girl so never really got on with “rollies” - to the extent that I had to use a rolling machine when it was my turn to roll a different kind of cigarette. Anyway, what surprised me was how much a pouch cost. I thought it was a cheaper option than buying what I would call ”normal” cigarettes, but it was over £16. How much does a pack of 20 Marlboro Light/Gold/Whatever cost these days?

20 Marlboro Lights/Gold are about a tenner from an offy or £12 from the supermarket. A 25g pouch will do you at least 50/60 rollies so still much better value. There’s a polish shop in Melton that sells 20 Marlboro Gold for a fiver. I don’t think they’re real/legal. The fact that the man produces a plastic basket from beneath the counter with boxes of fags in which have with no health warnings on tells me that they aren’t legal or probably real.

I loved rollies, always preferred them to straights. Love the smell of the tobacco, love rolling them, hate the fact that I can now smell rollies on other people and let’s face it, it’s not a pleasant smell.
