Should You Be Able To Change Your Gender Without Medical Checks?

Apparently there's a move towards people being officially able to 'self-identify' as whatever gender they want.

My instincts are towards tepid acceptance of this. Don't like the sound of official medical exams. You can change your name if you want to, why not be able to change your gender?

Presumably there would have to be some sort of regulation to stop men declaring they've decided to become a woman and then marching in to a woman's changing room or battered wives refuge or whatever?

People should be able to be whatever they want if they really feel it is where they should be. My caveat to this would be, they can only change once.

It's murky. Most of the trans people I've worked with have all essentially been (non-PC alert) big strapping blokes in a dress with make up and long hair (no idea what the state and of play underneath the dress was). I can see why some women would be uncomfortable with sharing certain spaces with them.

There used to be a shop on Eversholt Street, next to Euston station called something like "Transformations", where the business gents could nip in on their way home from the office and slip into a nice cocktail dress and a pair of size 11 stilettos.

I often wondered how convincing they thought they looked striding across the concourse to get their train in their massive blonde wig, heavy make up, five o'clock shadow and briefcase.
