    Should We Go For Broke

As far as I am concerned its "***** or Bust" time >:D

I know we are just beginning to get it right financially, but I think we need to "go for broke" in an effort to stay in The Premiership.

The way I see it the financial gap between The Premiership and the rest is going to widen even further next season, so if we are relegated we are going to take a bigger than normal backwards step financially anyway. So IMHO we should speculate to accumulate, by spending "BIG" in the attempt to keep our Premiership status.

    "LETS GO FOR BROKE"

Maybe we should have a poll on this, but I've forgotten how to set one up, HELP PLEASE! :-[

Go for it I say. the rewards next season will open an even greater gap between premiership and championship and make it almost impossible for promoted clubs to survive without serious investment and big squads.

Cheers mate, I still can't remember how to set a poll up, how is it done

Threads merged so the poll should work in VOR's thread now. Hope it's not too confusing ;)

I say NO. The V word's already been mentioned, we don't ever want to be going down that route again. With Aidy in charge I can see us becoming a permanent fixture in the Premiership within 3 or 4 years, no point blowing it now by going for broke.

    No

Even if we are able to convice a galactico or to to come here, if we don't stay up they'll ****** off or wont put the effort in next season. We need a couple of loanee stars and some up an coming lower leaguers to help us stay up. we can then build over the sumemr with some bigger stars when our Prem future is more secure.

No way, there is no way in earth I want to go down the ****** route again.

(p.s. I love seeing that come up in stars!)

No way we are going down anyway, and its not like there is a long list of players wanting to come to us.

imo, the long term future is more important than one season, if we go for broke and it doesn't work we will be in a much worse position.

I don't think we're going down anyway, Aidy will pull it out of the bag come January

    keep the faith;)

Aidy will only pull it out of the bag if he's given a significant amount of money to bring half a dozen premiership quality players to bolster the squad and find the back of the sodding net. Not 'galacticos' as someone said above (sorry forgot to note your name before replying). This is 'going for broke' IMO. We MUST stay up, the gap from next year will be unbridgeable.

I am keeping the faith, faith.

Although we have had some awful games (sheffield) we have only really been totally out played by Chelsea and Arsenal, we have also had a lot of bad luck and bad decisions against us in the first few months of the season,
I don't think we need 6 premiership quality players I think we would be ok with less than that and hopefully a little luck.

What worries me is going for broke spending a fortune and still going down, (unlikely I know) this is a worse case scenario, but if that happens then it won't just be about the gap being unbridgeable it will be us back in or near to being in administration.

'Go for broke' is a bit extreme but if you mean spend 10 million, and not have any money for a few seasons, then yes.

If we get relegated it's unlikely we'll bounce straight back.

But if we spend 10 million and stay up, we get 40 million next season!!

    go for broke...?

It depends what you mean by broke!

I voted NO because the future of our club is far more important than this one season. If we get relegated, we should be financially secure for a few years, and our young squad will be brought through and have chance to gel together as have reading.

BUT, If the club can afford to spend 5,6,7,8,10 million pound and still afford to survive financially after being relegated then WE MUST DEFINATELY SPEND THAT MONEY!!

We are pretty solid at the back which is the foundation to any good team, regardless of whether they are pushing for Europe or fighting relegation...All we need is the players to stick the ball in the net!!

Three of four players required... WE ARE STAYING UP!!!!

To be honest what top players can you see now coming to us and quite frankly I'd be horrified if the club spent 4/5 million on just one player as its such a risk when really so many areas probably need improving if we want to stay up.

Ofcourse Aidy should be given some funds to try and make positive changes because they are needed...I would rather go down fighting than with 20 points or something.

We must be careful because remember a loss was still made despite promotion and whilst the club is safe at the moment it only needs a few moments of madness and we will be back to square one.

I remember the likes of Bradford and Ipswich spent big after staying up for one season and look at the mess they got themselves into.

We wouldn't be able to spend big even if A we wanted to and B we had the resources too.

we will spend a bit to give ourselves a chance, no stupid risks.

people who talk of spending huge amounts need to sniff the coffee.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the last financial report didnt take promotion into account, that would be taken into account for the next one?

that is correct as the finanical statements were for the year ended 30 June 2006. So none of the money had been recieved by then.

I thought so. I think the next financial report should be far healthier.

No thanks. Not that I think it will even be possible. No-one who costs a lot of money will want to come to us and we don't want to be taking a big wage bill back to the championship.

Its a gamble worth taking in my book, because if it comes off we will be loaded, and if it don't, we will probably still be good enough to build again in The Championship! O0

definatley go for broke. the immediate goal of this club is to stay in the prem. lets put building for the future(a distraction imo) aside for now. lets all concentrate on staying up. if that means spending 10 million then do it as i feel we'll reap the rewards soon with the extra prem money. then with the stadium expansion, better players and youth coming through things will look alot lot better!
