Should we all be Liverpool supporters?

?

Do you support the plucky 'Brits' when they play in Europe?

  1. Yes, of course. They represent the dominant power of the marvellous English Premier League.

Although, to be fair, you're never going to be accused of being a "glory hunter" supporting Watford :D.
Mr HH was born in Liverpool but then moved to Manchester (luckily in time to avoid acquiring a scouse accent). He stayed true to his roots and supported Liverpool through school in the 1980s while surrounded by Manchester fans. Since moving "down south" to go to University, he's stayed put. His northern accent may be much softer as a result of living down here for all these years (although he still sounds northern to a born and bred southerner such as myself) but his loyalty to Liverpool has remained firm.
So, often, a fan's accent not "fitting" often doesn't tell the full story. And to use it as a reason for not supporting a British club in Europe is, frankly, ridiculous. (that directed at others, not you Diamond as I know you didn't say it would stop you doing so)

Obviously they're not, but this thread isn't about Man Utd.

I've probably mentioned it before but my brother in law is a die hard united fan who's never been to a home game. I actually pity the bloke because it's so pathetic. One time he took the p*ss when Utd beat Watford and I put the tw*t straight. He's never had the balls to try that again.

When Munich happened the whole country mourned. Sixty years on we have Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester City fans in a small minority disparaging the memory of the dead (and that includes a Blues legend Frank Swift). People on different sides of a city's rivalry as in Sheffield, Liverpool, Manchester and so on would happily walk together to matches.

The toxic relations, sniping all stem from the growing hooliganism, and the rise of envy which is understandable given how a select band of clubs (as with trying to get a bigger slice of the overseas TV deal) have squeezed others out. How can one with all consciousness support such clubs who have wildly upset the balance of football when all it means is that they get even more revenue to unbalance the playing field further. This is not just a English football phenomenon. It happens in all the major leagues. No one who does not support Bayern wants them to do well, ditto for Juventus and the old firm in Spain or big five in Buenos Aires.

No they are not but I know far more LFC 'fans' who either started liking them in the mid seventies or their parents did, than Man Utd.
As Smudger says it is a world wide problem and I've seen it in Italy with Juve and Spain with Barca and Real.

    With you there.

I have fond memories of the Euro nights of the 70's/80's when most people put down their club loyalty to support the British clubs against these devious continentals. These days half of the devious contentials would be playing for the British club!
Ive also noticed a difference in general with how football fans view other clubs. Back in that era i felt there was a better camaraderie between football fans. You didnt have to necessarily like another club but there was a mutual respect there, especially when clubs were successful. For example when Liverpool were dominating the league there was an appreciation of how good they were.
These days nearly all i see is "banter" and piss taking (most of it pretty childish if you ask me)
Personally i see myself as a football fan as much as a Watford fan.. though that is waning somewhat in the current football climate.

So what changed? Well Smudger explained it pretty well.. as did your comments above.
I'd just like to add that the Premier League has not only made football elitist it has had something of the same effect on football followers as well. Clubs these days are like little empires and i think that makes a lot of people overly inward looking.

I wonder how prevalent that view is. I am the opposite, just a fan of Watford not football. The time difference obviously notwithstanding, I never watch other teams play. If Watford were suddenly wiped off the footballing map I would take a passing interest in the game only. Pretty certain I wouldn't look to another club to support.

I'll be supporting football, in the hope that the final is a good match rather than a bore fest. Unless I choose to bet on one of the teams, then the other team can **** off (although if it's a Real vs Liverpool final I'll be betting on over 3.5 goals)

I dont go big into watching other clubs play.. other than a bit of groundhopping.

I dont know my 4-4-2's from my Christmas tree formations but what interests me in the stuff surrounding football. Stadiums, kits, paraphernalia, fandom etc and the communities that support football clubs. That's why ive always seen it as something that should tie us together, not drive us apart (local rivalries notwithstanding)

I agree, if I didn't support Watford at this stage I probably wouldn't support anybody. I still love the game, and I really enjoy playing (still playing Saturday league football at the moment so don't get to many games), however I don't really take that much interest in other games. I will binge watch the world cup but other than that I'm not that bothered so long as Watford do ok.

NHL on the other hand I have recently got really into, and follow avidly.

Glad Liverpool made it through. Should be a good final. Good for England as well when it comes to the rankings.

  16. If it isn't Watford then I want everyone else to lose, if I had my way both Liverpool and real madrid would lose the final

So Liverpool will get 16,626 tickets but only 63% will go to 'general supporter allocation'. Even for Watford that would be crap. Scousers overloading the turnstiles anyone?

I agree, but there's another factor. Until the early 80s Watford fans never expected to see their club playing in the same league as the big boys, so we could cheer an English (and even Scottish) team on knowing that their success had absolutely no effect on Watford

I haven’t heard anyone this year who hasn’t said that Citeh aren’t an epochal team.

Well, they wouldn’t have said epochal.

    Just sorta thought it.

    Just better.

I can't figure out the media narrative about last night at all. Nearly every paper has it down as a nerve-wracking game which Liverpool only just squeaked through. Even the BT Sport commentators were coming out with nonsense like, "If Liverpool can score a third now this tie will just about be put to bed." That with 15 minutes left and Roma needing 3 goals just to force extra time. Literal nonsense. I suppose the tv lot doing it makes sense, they need to keep people watching, but the print media I don't get.

Liverpool cruised through that game. Once they had the second on the night it was done, as Roma needed 5 more to progress. They were in 2nd gear after that. Yeah, Liverpool's game management was poor but it made no difference.

Agreed. It's all typical Liverpool hyperbole by a consistently biased Scouse-dominated press.

I hope Real destroy them in the final. 14 or 15 nil would be my preferred outcome.

Yes in this exceptional season that has been true.. and you always get the odd one or two generous folks.

But my earlier point still stands.. people are so wrapped up in their own clubs these days that they dont see the bigger footballing picture.

I hope Liverpool win. It will partly compensate that poor poor city for all the bad luck, victimisation and general discrimination they have suffered over the years. Thank god their quirky, unique sense of humour and loving support for eachother has just about kept their heads above water. The fact they have made the final proves there IS a god in my book.

I was out and only saw the ITV highlights from the point at which Liverpool scored their second goal. But it seems to me that from the two teams' recent history - Roma's comeback against Barcelona and Liverpools' shipping of two late goals in the first leg which gave Roma a sniff of a chance - it was reasonable to worry that the same thing might happen again. And by conceding a goal four minutes from the end and another in stoppage time, Liverpool showed that they could have blown it.

Surely as a Watford fan, UEA, with our history of turning victory into defeat in the last few minutes, you can understand a feeling that nothing less than a three-goal lead is safe? We've looked comfortable in games until it all went pear-shaped.

Lovren would fit nicely into our back four with his clumsy & haphazard approach to his work.

Salah was poor at The Vic at the beginning of the season, and missed a sitter. Liverpool must be looking to get rid of him, as well as Lovren and both their keepers.
