Rules people don't understand.

Pondering on the new laws being brought in and VAR, offside by a pube type nonsense, are there any rules you don't understand in the beautiful game? Or that others around you don't follow.

For example I'm pretty sure the 6 second goalkeeper rule was dispanded if indeed it ever really existed but fans still shout that the keepers held on for too long "6 seconds ref!"

I didn't realise that there was a rule you cant be offside from a goal kick until someone told me at a game a fews back.

Shouldn’t they shave their pubes if it’s going to make a difference?

Almost every throw-in in the Prem is a foul throw. Why?

I’ve never understood the need for foul throws. Perhaps someone could explain? Just throw it in how you like

Clearly the handball rule when it hits the defender in the box. This "natural silhouette" thing. Is there daylight allowed between body and arm?

It seems that every time it hits the defenders arm, its a pen. I thought it was still intent needs to be shown until the rule change?

Feet on the ground. Two hands. From behind the head. From behind the line.

It's not though. At the Everton game a few weeks back the crowd were getting more and more irate that every Everton throw was a foul because the players foot was over the line, (but still touching it). It showed me how many people don't have even a basic understanding of the rules and were shouting this fact at the top of their voices.

The first two times his foot was clearly on the pitch with a gap between the foot and the line. The following throws his foot was partly on the line.

Is the rule behind the line, or touching ?

It was just the one time, but every time after that the screaming got louder despite all subsequent throws being perfectly legal.

    My point made for me.

    Had to check.

At the moment of delivering the ball, the thrower must:

stand facing the field of play
have part of each foot on the touchline or on the ground outside the touchline
throw the ball with both hands from behind and over the head from the point where it left the field of play

All opponents must stand at least 2 m (2 yds) from the point at which the throw-in is taken.

The bit I have highlighted is the bit most abused.

That all makes sense but why has it got to be from behind the head ?

I wasn't aware that you're not allowed to kick the ball with the same foot foot more than 7 times in a row. After the 6th you must either use the other foot or head the ball. That one completely passed me by.

Well most managers seem unable to grasp the fact the injury time allocated is a minimum period of time ...

Most people don't seem to realise that a foul doesn't depend on whether you get the ball or not. Amount of times I hear "but he got the ball ref!" when the rules mention absolutely nothing about that.

Did that change a few years ago Reids ? I remember that cynical challenge by Vinny Jones on Gary Stephens of Spurs (?) that effectively ended his career where he went right though him on the touchline but it wasn't even given as a foul (from recollection) as he had got the ball before he continued straight through Stephens.

The PSG manager said the following ...but why on earth does he think that the shot needed to have been on target ?? Most handball penalties don't even relate to shots so presumably he just doesn't understand the rules either ?

"From my point of view I watched Dalot take the shot. I saw the ball flying straight from his foot and for me it was clear it was going way over the bar," said Tuchel.
"There are many things to discuss before taking the decision and I think it's a 50-50 decision. What makes it super hard is I had the clear feeling the shot was not on target, and to get rewarded with a penalty, there is no logic."

Happy to oblige and confess I didn't know that. I don't shout about foul throws though, just where its taken from

To be fair, it wasn't until I started coaching a team that I started reading up on the rules a lot more, (due to thinking the refs we had every week were idiots).

I’m not sure that he doesn’t understand the rules, more that he thinks they are wrong. Can see why he would be super pissed off: Utd didn’t look like scoring.

Why does a player receive a yellow card for taking his shirt off in front of his fans but not a yellow for standing in front of the opposition fans with arms outstretched, basically goading them. Which one of the two is more likely to cause a problem

We were just discussing this at work. You will have a optimal human shape and haircut for offside. A flat face will be useful for a striker and man buns and mullets are bad for defenders.

There are many rules which are silly and do not make a lot of sense. The reason some exist is to kerb a current trend that the football authorities did not like at the time. Taking the shirt off was one of them.

Another is a player leaving the field of play after receiving treatment. I know why this was introduced as it was being used as a timewasting tactic in the past. But now, it seems very unfair that you lose a player, even for a few seconds because of a technicality, when he's been injured by an opponent. The team that inflicts an injury on an opponent actually benefits as he is forced to leave the pitch, thus giving them a numerical advantage for a foul they have made. Just doesn't seem fair to me to reward a team for injuring an opponent.

It feels like football has been overtaken by the idea of football. I think I’m noticing it more because I haven’t been particularly invested in my team’s on pitch goings on this season. Refereeing, transfers and managers make up 99% of football coverage.

Not a moan about this thread by the way, I love reading this forum.

Agreed. And why doesn't it apply to goalkeepers? It's an artificial variation, presumably because it would be absurd not to have a keeper on the pitch.
