Not a great weekend, one that left me pretty hurt tbh.

Langley got tanked 6-2 in a cup game, and Hendon lost 4-2 to a team that will be up right up there come the end of the season (hopefully with us). Disappointing.

I passed! :)

It was such a great experience and met some great people. In my final assessment, I took a group of 20 guys and girls between 18 and 50 through a session called 'Through the Gate'.

This was a session based around keeping possession, passing and movement.

I set up a pitch about 30 yards by 30 yards with four 'gates' near the corners of the pitch. Four teams of two play on the pitch. They dribble and pass to each other through the gates. I then progressed this so that it was two teams of three passing between each other, then through a gate but with one opposition player closing them down. The final progression was to remove two of the gates and have two teams of four passing between each other to get through the gate.

It was so important for them to widen the pitch as much as possible and to move the ball quickly as the space was small!

On to my Level 2 badge in March :mengoal:

Congrats! Just as a warning, level 2 is significantly harder and they won't hesitate to fail you if somethings a bit wrong! I also think I had to do Through the Gate as mine, funny that!

I'm on holiday so no games for me this weekend. Langley drew 3-3 again, against top of the table which I'm happy with. No game for Hendon this week.

Feel like the 1881 should come down and give Langley and Hendon some support.

No game for Langley this week, but Hendon were up against top of the table and one of our biggest tests so far, we won 2-1 :D

Puts us 2nd in the table, 3 points behind the leaders and we've got a game in hand.

How old are these guys!? I could play at that standard and I thought I was awful now.

One guy in the middle is very very overweight, almost obese!?

Presume they're adults! That guy was indeed huge, we were joking before the game saying he's probably a box to box midfielder etc...to find he did actually play CM! They weren't a good team, shows by their record so far: P4 L4 GF3 GA29

I play football at a semi-decent standard in NI and you'd be surprised, some of the big guys are quite good. They're difficult to get the ball off and more often than not, if they are playing at m level, they are good at pin point passing/shooting. This guy does seem a bit too big though!

Indeed, we've got a decent but "large" player, was at Borehamwood for a bit (I think maybe youth level), but then got injured and put on a load of weight. It happens!

Here's one of the goals from Saturdays win, I missed the other by 3 seconds due to the battery dieing...

Opposite to last weekend!

Watford lost 2-1
Langley lost 2-1
Hendon lost 6-4.

I am fuming about the Hendon result. We scored within a minute on the clock, one of our players was fouled just outside the box, the ball rolled on after the foul and went straight to our player who took a touch and blasted it past the keeper. The second he hit the ball for the finish, the ref blew his whistle for a foul on us. He then gave a 50/50 penalty to them. Let a number of studs up tackles get away without so much a foul. Then as the main event gave a penalty for this tackle (number 11 is ours): - not only that, but you can clearly see the goalkeeper at 36 seconds tell the referee that he's not ready, ref ignores him and blows his whistle anyway. One of our players then apparently said "that's a joke of a decision ref" (i'm gonna guess he said something else though) and got a straight red card.

This referee is the same one that refereed our only other defeat so far, a 4-2 loss. During that game we were 2-1 down, our striker clean through on goal when he was bought down 2 yards into the box by their CB. Ref inexplicably gives a free kick outside the box and only books the defender. I like to think if we'd got that penalty, we would've taken the game. Our 2 most important games of the season ruined by 1 referee, which may indeed cost us the league. Fuming.

Been forgetting to post here. Good few games for Hendon, winning 4-1 last week and 8-3 today. Langley haven't had the best time, sitting in 10th out of 12, yet to find a win (bar a 6-0 cup victory yesterday)

0-0 draw for Langley Eagles against Old Windsor Reserves
6-0 win for Hendon against JL Rovers.

Tables now look like this:

Bit disappointing not to have a win yet. I'm most likely going to quit Langley this week, 2 teams is using a huge amount of time/energy. I haven't been to a Langley game for coming up to 2 months now for various reasons, which makes it hard to decide what to work on in training. Therefore I end up doing pretty generic drills and i'm just not enjoying it as much as I do with Hendon (I have a much better rapport with Hendon as well)

Really happy with my first season in management so far, great team, great relationship with the players and the results have far exceeded anything i'd expected. Not sure if we'll be getting promoted though, a few of the teams look really really strong.

I've now quit Langley, so it's all about Hendon now...

Good 6-1 win yesterday against a team that we played before and beat 11-0. Was horrified to concede (this was their 10th goal scored in 9 games whereas we're relatively solid in defence), however the goal was a horrible mistake by one of our most reliable players so pretty powerless to stop it happening. Think complacency (and a mix of everyone being on the lash the night before) was key for us not scoring as many as before, too many overly ambitious shots being taken which slowed the game down.

Signed myself up for my level 2 in goalkeeping coaching which starts next June. Looks to be good, ex-Watford keeper (and current QPR Academy Manager) Perry Suckling is the course tutor (who came in to my level 2 course and gave us a quick run through of some drills and answered any questions we had), very nice guy.

They lost 17-0 yesterday...

We had a cup game yesterday against a team we narrowly beat (2-1) a couple of months ago. Was expecting a tough game as our only goalkeeper not available as well as our midfield destroyer and RB not turning up at all. So we had 11 players exactly. From the video of the match last time around I could see that when pressed they panicked (more so than a normal grassroots side) and would lump it straight to the big guy they had up front. Asked the players (75% of which were still drunk/hungover) to just keep running at them whenever we didn't have the ball. I couldn't have asked them to play the first half any better, as the other team barely got out their half. We scored and went into the break 1-0 up but it could've been sealed by HT (clearance off the line, also we hit the post when 1 on 1 with the keeper). Asked everyone to keep going as we surely had them. We ended up winning 5-0, ecstatic. Top top perfomance.

Forgot to post after last Sundays game. Was essentially the title decider against Heathrow Club 3rds (yes, title decider halfway through the season). We were playing well up until we got a red card with half an hour left to play, eventually losing 1-0. Their celebrations meant they knew it was a very very important game, and tbh it stung. Gutted.

Huge game on Sunday, cup semi-final, we win and we're through to the final which is normally played at a proper ground (last season it was held at Uxbridge FCs ground). No pressure...

No clue about our opponents, best I can do is look at their results against the good and the crap teams we've played against

FC Creed:

Us: 12-0
Us: 10-1

Them: 4-0
Them: 5-1
Them: 17-0

FCS Feltham:

Us: 11-0
Us: 6-1

Them: 9-0
Them: 9-3

Heathrow Club 3rds (good team, will win the league)

Us: 2-4
Us: 0-1

Them: 1-6
Them: 1-6

Will be a close match...

Reids, I have a question for you about boys youth football. I have only ever coached girls so have never seen this before, I wonder if you could let me know your thoughts. I was about to play and was watching a local youth team train.

Training almost finished, players split into two teams, playing 6 a side. One player has the ball and is being pressed by another player very much within the rules. The player who was being pressed takes a kick at the player pressing and makes hard contact. The player who was kicked first kicked back. This went on for 20 seconds or so until the much bigger player kicked the smaller one to the floor. The coaches did nothing. The players looked to be 9 to 10 years old. Once the incident was over the game carried on with the smaller child looking quite visibly distressed and the larger player limping.

Should the coaches have intervened?

26. reids

I haven't coached kids yet (although would like to), but I most certainly would have got involved if I noticed it. They're not going for the ball, it's essentially a fight that's just escalated and letting it go on will do nobody any good. Parents could easily put in a complaint if the kid mentioned it and then you'd probably get into trouble for not stopping it (duty of care etc)

OK thanks for the answer. I had to fight my own instincts not to run over and pull them apart and I'm actually a little upset about what I saw afterwards. Duty of care was what I was looking for, cheers.

I coach that age group in rugby, if there was any fighting like this I would have intervened immediately, they would have both been removed from the pitch and I would have spoken to their parents right there and then. Letting it go sends the wrong message, not doing anything is wrong; what if the bigger kid then stamped on the smaller kid's head and caused a real injury? At the end of the day the coaches have a duty of care and if something more serious happened the club could have been liable.

Fortunately I've only had one child that had a temper and occasionally hit out. He was reprimanded and down to a final warning (or face expulsion from my team), since then his behaviour has improved.

30. reids

That was hard to take. 2-0 up with 25 to go, they score to take it to 2-1. They get a free kick on the edge of the box with no time left on the clock, goes top corner and the ref blows for full-time as soon as we kick off, taking it to extra time. They bag again in ET. 2-0 down to losing 3-2. Devastated.

Played them in the league today. Beat them 6-0. Good way to bounce back and show them it was an undeserved victory. Puts us back on top of the table for the time being.

I am managing a group of our local park pickup crew competing in a tournament between other pickup groups around LA affiliated with our Galaxy supporters group. I am surprised by how much I enjoy running a team, and take pleasure in seeing your successes, too.

I'll be sure to check in and see how you're doing. Viva Los Hendons!

Crashed out our last cup competition (in the quarter final stage) yesterday, falling to a 3-0 defeat to a team that's top of the division above us. I went to watch them a few weeks ago to do an analysis on them and hopefully give us an edge but it didn't really show that we knew about them. Last chance for a successful season will be promotion. It's going to be very very close.

5 games left against:

AFC Heathrow (Sunday)
St Marys University
Willow Park
Wishing Well Wanderers x 2

Have a feeling promotion will be decided on the last day of the season.

How do you manage to go and watch a team play? Do they not play at the same time as your team plays?

In Northern Ireland all amateur football starts at the same time.

Is it also usual for your league to finish so early? We are only half way through our league campaign over here although a lot of that is down to weather!

35. reids

reids First Team

They did kick off at the same time, but I reckoned I could skip our match and we'd still get the win (which we did, 6-0). Bit of a gamble but deemed it worth it. This is the first season in this league, and the teams i've played before have never finished a season this early. Think we've been pretty lucky with scheduling/weather. Only 1 match called off so far.
