Most people who have played or even just watched footbal, even me ;), can useually tell whether a foul is deliberate or if the offending player has just been done by the superior skills of his opponent, causing a tackle to be late.

Therefore surely you would think that a ref should be able to distinguish whether a foul is deliberate or not? Assuming that is the case, why do so many cards get given for non deliberate fouls? Non deliberate fouls should of course concede a free kick or a penalty, but should they be punished with a card?

I don't think so! What do you guys think?

There are three types of foul according to the Laws of the Game:

    Careless (no sanction)
    Reckless (yellow)
    With Excessive Force (red)

However, you can commit a few careless fouls and still get a yellow card for persistent fouling.

You can be both careless and reckless without having any intention to foul your opponent.

I take your points, and I agree that maybe persistent fouling should probably incur a card.

However, when an opponent is just to quick for a player and the tackling player makes an honest attempt to play the ball, but catches his opponent late because of his skill or speed, a free kick or penalty should be sufficient IMO, he should not be carded as he is attempting to play the game fairly and not deliberately fouling his man.

No cards at all for us yesterday, quite impressive given that Amrabat committed six fouls, five of which were in a 15 minute period either side of half time.

Amrabat was constantly giving away free kicks but none were ever deemed worthy of a yellow card.
Him and Moreno were giving as good as they got to each other and the ref was fair to just let it go as both were just playing the game of R/W against L/B in my opinion. If it got malicious or nasty then the would have been booked!
