Those of you who enjoy playing console (and PC) games from time to time will probably know about Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2. The new one looks absolutely incredible and I have no doubt will be one of the best games ever. A new gameplay trailer (#2) has been released today and i'm extremely bloody excited to say the least. Anyone else lookin' forward to this masterpiece?

Very excited for this. Just placed my pre-order. I'm hoping for more DLC single player content than GTA-5, they milked the online part.

Only thing I'm slightly disappointed about is that they haven't included native Indian settlements and tribes.
Regardless, what I have seen looks very very good!

For me Days gone, World war Z and The Last of us II are the titles I cant wait to play!
The Last of Us is still by far the best game I have ever played.

Absolutely. I much prefer single player to multiplayer games these days unless i'm playing something like Fifa online with a couple of mates. GTA 5 story was brilliant but once completed, the free roam felt a bit dry.

Regarding the native indians, I wouldn't be surprised if they did include something of the likes. Unless it has been confirmed that they have not?

Loved The Last of Us. I would agree with you that it is one of the best storyline-driven games ever, joint with The Witcher 3, Red Dead 1 and Mafia 1&2. Fantastic games that put a lot of others to shame really.

I haven't played either, but apparently Uncharted 4 and the new God of War are incredible too.

Oh look. It's stubble-chinned heroic cowboys killing reds.

Not at all cultural imperialism then.

Since BO1, I've not been so interested with the Call of Duty scene because they've mostly focused on multiplayer because that's where the big money is made. Even the WW2 one had a pretty stale campign which was particularly disappointing considering how much I loved World At War. Battlefield 5 does look interesting though

Mentioned before, I don't actually think there are any Native Indians in the game. Storyline's mostly a bank robbery type setting and not a plot of committing genocide against Red Indians. Not necessarily cultural imperialism when it outlines the darkness of the times, albeit with an exaggerated storyline :)

Yeah, but it's killing, right? Like so much of the output of the bloodthirsty imperialist monster of the north. Desensitising. They always had trouble in wars in getting soldiers to shoot 'the enemy'. A lot of soldiers would deliberately fire well over the heads of the opposite side. It's a big thing, or it's supposed to be, ending a fellow human being's life. Look at the torment of Bruce Grobelaar at this very moment if you need evidence.

But these games where - to quote the starstruck super-awsome breathless Wiki page write up notes in passing: " a very negative or criminal reputation warrants the player a large amount of respect" - it's nothing to blow away a very realistic representation of another person, or people and move on to the next atrocity without a second thought.

I don't suppose it's a deliberate aim of the makers of these games makers, but I do think that desensitivity to gruesome horrors is an effect. A by-product.

I would challenge you instead to a game of chess. Played for centuries all around the world and can be played in every country, with barely a need for words. Skill, strategy, attack, defence, sacrifices, spears, forks and spikes. For me, it's a healthier and better game.

Chess if fine, it's not for me, but it's a good hobby to have. I'm not having a go, but the way you put it appears to imply that you are some form of superior who is far too intellectual to play 'mindless' games. Perhaps you are right, but i'm happy dishing out 50 odd quid on something that keeps me entertained for a fair few hours after a days work.

I think you are over thinking this one Clive. It's a Western based game... A game for people to play to waste some of their free time and in most cases to relieve boredom. I enjoy this type of game, and I for one don't finish it thinking "I need to find some Red Indians to kill because PRO AMERICUH OHH RAHH". It is no different to the older generation watching Clint Eastwood Westerns back in the day.

Yeah I've not really been that interested in COD since MW2 but I really enjoy BR and Zombies so to have both available in one game has won me over.

Yes of course, but people spend an awful lot of time playing them. They're wrapped up in them. Absorbed

I'm 100% not trying to appear superior. You should know if you've read other of my posts that I am very lowly - underclass and minimum wage.

All I'm trying to do is give sincere advice. I hear what you say and understand that it's an absorbing pastime that must get the pulse pounding.

You're right that the older generation complained in the days of violent Clint Eastwood and other horror films of those days for exactly the same reasons I'm complaining now. But when you look at those 'shocking' films now, they seem comically tame and feeble by comparison.

I'm not asking games players to give up these games. All I'm asking for is for you not to forget to be critical of them. Not to suck up whatever's presented to you uncritically or without consideration of humanity. There are plenty of good car racing or football games where nobody gets killed too!

Every single peer reviewed psychological study has shown the complete opposite.

Violent games don't make people violent.

We dont like chess in our house. Way too violent for the children to be subjected to. Not having my son trying to kill queens and kings. I'm surprised Clive enjoys its depiction of the working class pawns being sent to die for the upper class elite who ride horses and live in castles.

I think one of the developers said it was set a little too late for Native Indians. There is no doubt that there would have been small groups living in the forests and mountains at this time. It would have made travelling alone interesting if you were stalked by Apaches through the forest orbeing chased across wild-lands ! oh well...

The Uncharted games got better as they went on. Not quite on the same level as the Last of Us but if you enjoyed the style of game-play then you would enjoy these. God of war was amazing, easily in my top 5 games.
Witcher 3 was good but dont understand all the hype, the world creation was incredible and the amount of content is matched only by Skyrim, however the combat like Skyrim was really boring and repetitive.

I've not played the Mafia games, worth playing? Same for LA Noire?

  21. CaveManHornet

Mafia 1&2 are well worth playing. Both have fantastic, replayable storylines. Combat is a little basic but the driving is 2nd to none. Don't bother with the latest one (Mafia 3)... Repetitive grind which is stale and boring.

LA Noire is good but I think it is only enjoyable for those that enjoy solving crimes etc. If you like crime/detective series, you'll love LA Noire. If all you want to do is drive around and murder people, then it's probably not for you.

I partially agree with the Witcher 3 comment but I think the storyline itself compensates for any repetitive gameplay imo.

I might have to give LA Noire a go! I have heard many good things about it.

I am currently playing Spider Man and am really enjoying it. There is something really enjoyable about swinging through New York while the sun is setting. They have absolutely nailed the free flowing swinging movement of the spider.
Very similar to Batman in terms of gadgets and fighting meaning it doesn't get boring. It may even be better than Batman but I will wait until I finish it before I confirm that statement.

Before this I gave Shadow of War a second play through, great game. Massive fan of the Nemesis system, makes the game very personal. If you get killed even by a simple enemy they are upgraded to a captain or general and with that become harder to kill the next time, all the while whilst retaining the battle scars you inflicted the last time you met.

As for the people above discussing gaming and a link to violence. I completely disagree. Perhaps when it comes to children playing games rated above their ages we should look at the parents that allow them to play these games. I would never allow my child to play GTA etc. Would you let them watch Scum?
When you are old enough to actually play them if you cant differentiate between right and wrong and real life or a computer game then this is down the a lack or education and empathy. Everyone knows the difference between right and wrong no matter what your background, it is natural instinct. It just another excuse in an oversensitive world.

Bored of Fortnite - the building gets on my nerves.

Just looking forward to The Last of Us part 2, I suppose.

  35. I never really got into these when I was younger, but would be interested in starting. I played Driver and Mission impossible on the PS1 back in the early noughties but never really found time to continue.

And now I just fear that gameplay is so advanced that you need to be a kid who picks these type of things up easily or have a lot of patience, which I lack!

So as a newbie, are these pretty easy to get into?

Do they still follow a linear storyline or is it a free for all where you just run around doing anything you like? Do you need advanced set ups?

I was thinking of getting a PS4 with vr added anyway so would have the up-to-date tech required.
