This time the window extends well into the new season doesn’t it? Mid October?

Opens tomorrow and closes Monday 5th October.

Edit: we have 10 weeks to sort our defence out. A little under 6 weeks until the season starts. Who wants to bet Gino waits until October 5th to sign a starting CB?

Edit #2: I don’t bet, it was metaphorical.

Who's going to buy someone who's done their ACL and not played a game since?

Oh come on. There will be plenty of clubs willing to take a risk on a player of his quality and pedigree, especially as he is still in his prime years. He's actually recovered pretty quickly which is always a positive sign and looks like he'll be ready to join pre-season. Someone will take him without a doubt, especially as he won't cost the earth.

Hmmm so if GD starts the season and looks decent, chances are he will be a Deadline Day departure.

The window closing three weeks into the new season (that could be 6 matches in) could well disrupt us a lot.

I think the 5th is a domestic window isn’t it, whereas the European one shuts earlier?

After he's played a few games, yes.

Not in the next month imho

People will be queuing up to buy him. He scored three goals this season...

Geri will be a late departure - largely due to the valuation. Many won't pay what Gino wants whilst unsure on his fitness - Can see that one going to the last week.

And one of those was a penalty!

4 goals and 5 assists from 28 games in the second worst team in the league. But let's not let decent stats, as well as his obvious talent and favourable age, get in the way of delusion.

Nope, they all shut on 5th October :)

Some start later, but they all close on the same day.

One was a penalty though wasn’t it? And they don’t count if you look at the Deeney squealing thread...

What does Deeney have to do with anything in regards to this discussion? Deulofeu is a completely different player, who plays in a different position, and is almost 6 years younger.

You are someone who has never particularly liked Deulofeu, you've made that clear plenty of times, but being directly responsible for 9 goals in 28 games as a winger in a completely s**t team isn't bad going. He also scored 10 and assisted 5 from 30 league appearances the season before.

Decent stats, obviously immensely talented to anyone with a brain and eyes, in his prime years, has recovered quickly from his injury and has vast Premier League experience. But no, why would anyone sign him?

10 goals and 2 assists in 27 games isn’t a bad return for Deeney playing alone up top then, surely? Especially being 6 years older.

Sorry for talking about Deeney on a Watford fans forum. Silly me.

My obvious point is that this discussion was about Deulofeu and whether or not clubs will come in for him, which has absolutely nothing to do with Deeney at all.

He’s too good not to attract interest. He’ll leave on loan with an option/obligation to buy.

At least we have Wilmot coming back, even if we could just sign one more CB, and have the current lot as backup, that'll do me very nicely

Might be better for us if he puts in some stinkers early on in the season, only to turn it on afterwards so we can keep him until Jan ;)

Does it have an app like the Premier League?

Is there a Championship fantasy league?

Hasn't he come back to us after his injury? Funny one, they seem to really rate him, but he's not even played that much for them. Is he ready to be a regular Premier League starter? Probably not, but what a prospect he'd be in the Championship for us

The defence certainly won't be stronger than it was this season, nor will the forwards, midfield or GK. This window will be all about reducing payroll costs, getting in whatever transfer fees we can, and filling gaps with free transfers or youth players. As with others, CV19 will have left a gaping hole in our current and future finances, relegation will have made that hole wider and deeper. There was also an article claiming many of our players didn't have relegation clauses in their contracts wasn't there ?

Some of our high earners was the speculation. It depends who the high earners are exactly, but at face value that doesn't worry me too much as I don't think we have any Jack Rodwell's among them. Maybe Gray the only worry if he's in that boat. The rest should be easy to move on.

And while I think most of what you say is probably true, I expect we'll pay a fee for some players this summer. I'll be surprised if it's just frees or youth players coming in. The team desperately needs some Championship experience or at least a handful of players with a winning mentality at this level or who excelled in League 1.

I think it's going to be a very challenging window. I suspect given the level of debt we had last year, plus the loss of income that we would have assumed, plus the impact of the drop to parachute payments and for only a limited period, the main challenge will be making sure we are still here in 3 years time. We had debts of what was it £80m ??? We would have expected to be able to cover that with future TV money. I suspect we will only pay fees if we are successful in selling our better players for good prices and that will be hard due as everyone will have less to spend.

  32. wfc4ever

    wfc4ever Administrator Staff Member

Yes although not sure how true that is.

Surely has to be all of them or none just for squad unity ?

Maybe a sign we will get rid of the higher earners.

  33. The undeniable truth

    Nor me.
    Squad unity. Yeah, right.
Ideally but what if, given football finances generally, we are offered £15m for Sarr, £10m for Doucs, £5m for Pereyra, loan with option to buy for GD. Do we just sell to get them off the payroll ? What is no suitor will match their current salary and so the player decides not to go, or we have to continue paying 25% salary....??
Tought times to be in debt and needing to sell to cover massive debts.....

It'll just be the age old Championship dilemma of working out how much we can afford to speculate to accumulate. And I think a lot of the loans were of the payday loan variety - they're just advances on the tv money we were due to get anyway. I can't see why we'd need to sell anyone to cover those. It'll be different with paying whatever we still owe for players we've bought though I guess.

Maybe the one silver lining of getting relegated is if Gray might have a wage cut clause, making him easier to shift.
