Proven Prem Performers

I think we all agree that's what we need more than anything. But why would any of them join us if we are where we are in the table?

A host of clubs will be chasing the same players we are, all of whome will have more money and a better league position.

Before the start of the season I was smiling at Warnocks attempt to sign forwards enough to field a team of them - but since Marlon's injury, I wish Aidy had gone in for any one of them. But I see Warnocks wisdom (if you will) - taking in players so that we can't get them.

Now why wouldn't that apply for this window. Why would any of the clubs from ManCity and down not go in for players even if they don't strictly need them?

I cannot see us getting any decent players in other than loanees. If we buy during this window it won't be proven prem performers but maybe top performers from the fizzy-pop. The thing is though - we've got a team full of fizzy top performers, so why get more.

I fear we'll get stuck with wannabees, also-rans and never-were's unless we are extremely lucky.

I see we're feeling optimistic then?

    Well yes and no.

Had we had a little more luck we'd be in a completely different place and people would be dying to join us rather than Blades, Royals, Boro et al.

But with regards to getting in the right players in our current situation - no, I am not optimistic. We may get lucky and get our own Doyle (of Reading) but I just don't see us getting anyone who's been there, done that - so to speak.

I hope to god Aidy will prove me wrong - as he is a football genius.

But we were never likely to be in a position to sign estabished Premiership players until we were an established Premiership club - something that was highly unlikely to happen until next season at the earliest. I also disagree with the idea that people are 'dying' to join Reading, Blunts etc - I'd be surprised if they signed any established Prem players either. Anyway, Sheff Utd are only 4pts ahead of us, they're hardly worlds apart!

You also have to remember finances come into it as well as league position. Established Premiership players cost a lot of money - both in transfer fees and wages, and I don't think we have much of that to throw about.

Oh - I'd never say people were dying to join Blunts, Reading etc. I am just saying that simply due to league position, they seem the better place to go. Blunts are 6 points ahead of us as far as I know - that's two victories we need to gain on them. They're 16th, Reading are 7th. Looks a lot better than 20th.

Now we all know that we've played far better and been far closer in most of our matches than Blunts have in theirs - but points on the board is what counts and during the window, they will probably have an advantage.

In all this doom and gloom, let me just add that I feel we can stay up with our current squad if we have as much good fortune during spring as we have had bad luck during autumn. No small request though.

Possibly the only way we'll attract a decent striker is if the contract is right. For example, Kanu's contract at West Brom paid him well whilst they were in the Premier League, but allowed him to leave when the club were relegated.

You were right about the points gap though, I was day dreaming about us beating Newcastle! ;D

who would you all say our best players this season are?
    mahon?
    shittu?
    foster?
    demerit?
    young?
king would have been there too probably.

now which of these are established prem players?
francis and powell are, and tthey havent been our best players.
championship players can be just as good.

I agree, just because sheff utd are 6 points ahead of us means nothing... they along charlton, west ham, middlesboro, blackburn, reading and fulham are all in the same boat... fighting for relegation.

Makes no difference, we'll sign a couple thats guaranteed!
