Quite harsh to call Deeney "absolutely useless" and his contribution "next to nothing" given his recent performances, especially his part in our win in a tough fixture at Stoke. He scored in only our last game and it wasn't his fault we lost.

I'm not denying the fact that he's a shadow of his former self but I'm not sure what else he has to do to convert some of our fans who are adamant he serves absolutely no purpose and should be got rid of ASAP no matter what he does, and make them hold their hands up and concede that there is some justification for his still being in the squad.

 

Interesting - you "liked" my post which suggested you agreed with me that we would have got more points from the final fixtures had it not been for COVID, but now you're saying we got the number of points we would have expected to get?

 

The justification is purely clutching at straws, though, that's why - he 'scored' a penalty, again. Let's not pretend he's any kind of goal threat from open play, and yes, you can point to a somewhat positive/contributory performance at Stoke, but that's still the exception, not the norm. His presence in the team, playing the only position he is capable of, which is that of a non (open play) goalscoring, non (open play) goal-threatening second striker who is competent-to-decent at passing, is a huge indulgence, and him taking up that position means that someone who would very likely perform better in it cannot - even Hughes would be a better choice, and Zinckernagel is the superior player at this point in every aspect that isn't the herculean task of penalty-scoring.

Most of the time, as the captain leader legend, he still does very little to drive the team forward or get us on the front foot, still plays his part in performing sluggishly and joining the team starting games like they're hungover, and still barely moves whilst constantly throwing up his arms in frustration and mugging off teammates who are doing more (if not enough) to try and help us score and win than he is.

When judged against our other senior striker, Troy has something that speaks in his favour, which is that he is not totally, entirely useless when he is on the pitch - he is capable, at times, of contributing to the team in a positive fashion in the most basic sense. But that is an extremely low bar, and not one that he manages to clear when up against any other player. We would be better served if we weren't seemingly being constantly forced to play him, and that's why people judge him the way they do.

 

I could not have summed it up any better. The Stoke performance was another Deeney red Herring, he did a bit better than usual, he tried a bit harder than usual, but we get that from Troy every 10 games or so. It’s always enough to suck a few fans in, but the question should be, why did he play a bit better at Stoke and not in the previous however many games.

 

Yes, I agree that our performances were flat after the restart and we didn’t cope well with the lockdown conditions, along with some other teams such as Leicester and Palace, but I still think we got about the number of points we would have expected from that point. For example, the two home wins over Norwich and Newcastle were both dodgy. They might have been more convincing wins in normal times but we still got the points.

 

I don’t get the deeney hate. The guy was a great player for us over the years. But he is now not the same player and should have gone 2 years ago. He should never have been offered a 5 year contract in 2016 and, as they did, the club should have focussed on sorting the attack out so he would be, at best, an impact sub or just a squad player.

 

It’s not a question of hating Deeney, The thread is called problems and solutions and you yourself have perfectly summed up one of our biggest problems and what should have been the solution to it. The hate is for the owners, having created the problem and then failed to implement the solution.

 

I’d settle for strapping him to one of Elon’s exploding test rockets.

That's not very practical. It would need to carry a heck of a lot more fuel.

 

Thing is, we could have used the lockdown incidents to isolate him. Have him train on his own and not pick him.

The team would have lost nothing and it would have made it clear he was on the market as soon as the window opens.

Having him play every week and not score is more damaging to getting him moved on, than people thinking he's potentially still got goals in him, but being excluded for discipline.

We've allowed him to come in, make the playing side worse, paid him bonuses and made it utterly clear that he's worthless to any potential buyer/loan side.

 

Run? Score a goal from open play? Lead the team as a captain and inspire more than the wet lettuce we see every week?

 

Yeah but apart from all that, was it a good idea?

 

Whoever is currently in charge of PR and marketing has to go!

I'm not defending the club at all, after all, they decided to continue to make Gray available for selection all the time, but how do you know that we didn't try to shift him in the summer? Nobody in their right mind would sign him...

 

Get rid of Deeney and Gray, actually appoint a competent manager and let him do his thing, and I think at least we'll be able to enjoy ourselves again. We'll probably be reduced to a lower mid-table Championship side again, but whatever

 

Have people seen Luther's reaction to the ham-fisted attempts to liken Gray to him in that interview nightmare? I might be late to this, but it's incredible, I could hardly believe it - even worse PR than first appearance.

 

Time for the club to come out and tell the fans what their short term aims are. Just tell us its a royal f**k up and that there's just no money to do anything other than get by this season on a best efforts basis, and we can start to buy-in to the clubs ethos.
Right now it's like wandering through you worst dream with no idea what the club are aiming for...

I find this even more upsetting than the fact the team is so rubbish at the moment. The casual and tenuous use of Luther's good name in such an idiotic way, and the fact that it seems to have really pissed him off.

He's a club legend and a thoroughly decent bloke (whom I've been lucky enough to meet). To see him being used by the club so crassly is awful. I probably sound like a drama queen here, but what has become of us?

Nobody is going to take dreadful Deeney and Gray off our hands but we need to move forward. After this season have them train away from the team with no prospect of selection. We have to pay them anyway so I’d rather they aren’t polluting the first team with their awful performances even if we have to operate on a tight budget. And in Deeney’s case it is vital for the next manager to have him out of the equation for the rebuild.

 

Problem is, as fans, we have no idea what happens behind the scenes

perhaps Pozzos agree with most on this board and were trying to strengthen the squad in key areas but a combination of the collapse of the transfer market and lack of funds hampered that

perhaps we play the formations we do because some players, such as Hughes, just aren’t fit enough to start

maybe Luther asks for ridiculous fees to work with Watford

maybe deeney isn’t running the show like most think

without any comment from the owners then we will all just start hypothesising about what’s potentially true.

Absolutely agree, the whole club is rotten and this is the only thing that can change things in immediate term. We can't shift the toxic elements of the playing squad until the summer and Gino won't sell now (he's not going to get the price he would want unless we're in the top tier).

Then we need a proper clear out and a new 3 year plan for promotion based on an actual coherent recruiting strategy.

 

People asking for Gino to speak to us, do we know he actually speaks our language!

I heard him speak at the end of season awards night in the Slav season.
He was very eloquent,spoke with a mid Atlantic accent as you might imagine,having been at Harvard although I'm beginning to think that he actually went to Harrods,just to buy a suit.
Has to put right the enormous mess up that this week,let alone the last two seasons, have been and he has to address the fans.
