Preferred style of management: Dyche or Silva?

With Burnley currently 4th and us worryingly looking over our shoulders, which would you prefer?

  1. Silva's attacking style with its accompanying extreme highs of excitement and lows of despair?

  2. Dyche's defensive style with its effective but dour consistency?

Thinking philosophically the morning after the night before at Palace, I would still go for Silva's style than Dyche's. I would always subscribe to GT's 'be prepared to lose in order to win' approach rather than do anything not to lose. Even if it means being subject to the occasional calamitous last ten minutes we had last night!

Watch Dyche on the sidelines next time Burnley play at our place. It's enlightening. Silva all day thanks.

I’d take Europe over relegation, sadly.

    Sorry Marco.

I think Silva’s style is very attractive when it’s going well, but Dyche builds consistent sides that are successful.

So the choice is style over substance, but I would have to go with Dyche.

But I’m coming at it from a different angle. We had Dyche as our manager. Had we kept him we could be even better than Burnley right now, as Watford has better resources.

A key factor in choosing Dyche would be loyalty. Dyche is clearly capable but also wants to stay and build something at the club. I would say Silva is also capable but will go at the first opportunity, which he has already demonstrated.

I think it’s important to at least have the illusion that the coach will be around for a couple of years.

Dyche seems to be an admirable man and an admirable manager, but as he himself said at one of the Palace Theatre events, he doesn't fit the Pozzo model. They brought the money in, they call the shots, and they wanted to move to continental-style football. Would he have been able to manage all the foreign fancy dans the Pozzos brought in when they arrived? Probably not. Would he have wanted to work under a sporting director? Definitely not.

The Sunday Times report on the Burnley-Watford match included a ludicrous statement that the Pozzos sacked Dyche because they thought he wasn't cut out to be a manager, and that this was one of the worst decisions in Premier League history. It's true that they thought he wasn't cut out to be THEIR manager, but Watford have done pretty well despite their hit-and-miss record with head coaches.

That said, I'm delighted to see Burnley in 4th place, especially as I don't have to watch them every week, and I wish Dyche all success. Nevertheless, I'd rather have Siva as Watford head coach than have Dyche back here.

I doubt we could defend liked Burnley do as proven in a number of games!

You need the personal to sit back and keep it tight - we don't.

Strange comment for them to make!

Think I'd rather have Jokanovic. If we'd stumped up his renewall price we would have avoided Mazzari, QSF and the constant "how many mangers have Watford had in the last 5 years" crap we get every time pundits talk about us simply becasue it;s the only statistic interesting to them.

  10. Whats wrong with having in between Silva and Dyche?

When we are leading away from home 15 minutes to go shut up shop... take the momentum out of the game... take the points ffs

Despite extremely frustrating moments like last night and at Everton I am really enjoying this season and the football we play. When we get it right we look fantastic absolutely no way I would swap it for boring defensive football. You could also argue that our consistency is not down to our style of play at all but more the amount of injuies we pick up.I think Marco Silva deserves more credit if Burnley had the same amount of injuries to their squad they wouldn't be where they are in the league currently. Silvas doing a fantastic job!

Fair play to Burnley and I bet their fans are loving it, as we would if we were 4th. Don't kid yourself you wouldn't no matter what the football was like.

Still enjoying the way we play and attack but it will leave us open.

Last night however was nothing about our style. We just played absolutely shockingly from the goal to the end.

I'd take Burnley type football to be sitting in 4th, they must be loving life, fair play to them and Dyche!

Personally, if it was up to me, I'd have neither manager.

I'm weird, in that I am often entertained in tight, tactical contests. I like a tactical manager with a game plan that clearly sets out to nullify the opposition and exploit their weaknesses. Aimless hoofball is awful, but so is entertaining football where you can dominate a match and still end up losing. There is a middle ground.

Jokanovic was great for me. I think, over time, one-trick-pony managers (even Dyche) are likely to be found out, and so a good manager needs to be adaptable to the changing conditions on the pitch. They also need to be able to harbour a team spirit/ motivate players, and maintain a high level of fitness throughout the year.

Silva is OK and we play decent football and have scored lots of goals -despite our awful strikers. But at times, it becomes a bit of a free-for-all. And that is when things get a little desperate, and we pick up needless injuries/ suspensions.

I'm not doubting Silva's credentials yet, as he is desperately lacking leaders in defence. Kaboul - bizarrely not rated by many on here - is probably the biggest loss, at a time when morale and form, especially at the back, is dipping. If we bring in a quality defender in January, Marco needs to do better.

Joker was my favourite too. Plans B and C, everyone understood their role even if it changed after 30 minutes. Surprising he hasn't been more successful at Fulham

I don't really claim to be an expert on Burnley, I don't watch them except when they are playing Watford or on MOTD - which is made up of very short clips.
But are Burnley actually a very defensive outfit, or are they a more attacking team which knows how to defend properly, but doesn't really have particularly good attacking players?

Burnley's attack seemingly improved immeasurably in the summer, when they unloaded a steaming pile of horseshit onto one of their rivals for £18m

But we tried that against Chelsea and ****ed that up too. Silva is talented but inexperienced and will make mistakes. We also don’t have great defenders either which doesn’t help his decision making. I’m not disagreeing with you by the way, but the Chelsea game shows he isn’t averse to shutting up shop, he’s just not that experienced in knowing when to do it.

Dyche has built ONE side that's consistent. He doesn't "consistently" build sides, you're making him out to be Pulis already. Remember the great Eddie Howe went to Burnley and failed so went quietly back to Bournemouth with his tail in between his legs. Let Dyche repeat this somewhere else before we make him out to be a messiah. For now, for me, he's just another Big Sam, Pulis, Curbishley etc

For me it’s one of the great ‘Sliding Doors’ conundrums of our club’s modern era, the decision by the Pozzos to get rid of Dyche soon after taking over. After a rocky start, he guided us to a decent finish in his only season in charge. He was recommended for the post by GT, who knew a thing or two about football management! Yet had he stayed, there’d have been no Deeeeneyyy moment, no exciting breathless football that we were to enjoy under Zola. Instead most likely there’d have been more defensive solidness and obviously more continuity in our coaching roles. I always felt that first season under the Pozzos we needed Zola’s nous in organising the creative players and Dyche’s with the defenders. That could have been some combination. I wonder if Dyche might have been retained at the club had the Pozzos arrived a season earlier, and Malay was the incumbent manager who they then fired?

Silva has so far done some good things, but equally some bad. It’s still too early to assess him properly. Give him at least one more window, because we can all see the imbalances in our squad. Let’s get our injured players back too. Personally I prefer to see positive attacking football, with teams set up to win. Dyche has done great at Burnley, and two promotions out of the Championship is a superb feat, but history shows us that supporters at clubs that tend to consistently be involved in low scoring matches eventually start complaining at lack of entertainment. Tony Pulis springs to mind immediately!! Once supporters get used to winning, suddenly most want more than scrappy 1-0 victories.

The problem with Dyche's style is the fine margins. A 1 - 0 could easily be a 0 - 0 and that's when the fans start complaining. You only have to look at Quique's season to see that defensive football is OK when you're winning but dire when you are drawing or losing. Pulis and Hughes this season show what happens when those fine margins go the other way.

I'm unhappy when we lose or draw with Silva but at least I can see the intent and purpose and, in general, I am entertained while the match is happening. I know Dyche has improved since he coached us, but I was certainly not entertained by his style.

The point I'm trying to make is that Burnley fans are entertained by the good results; not the style. Most Watford fans are entertained by the football and disappointed with poor results.

Dyche guarantees you Premiership survival, Silva guarantees you inconsistency and potentially a relegation battle with players who won't get stuck in when it matters.

I agree with a lot of these comments. Football fans mostly care about the winning. Everton and West
Ham fans were up in arms before
Big Sam and Moyes joined and of late most are singing the team praises.
If QSF had got results 2nd half of season and finished top 8 we'd be all saying what a great manager knows how to get teams to defend etc etc. But coz he didn't it all changed with I'm sick of this boring football etc etc.

Personally I've always backed a solid back 4 base that can defend and then work from there. If you don't concede you don't lose a game.

So on current form I prefer Dyche.

Entertainment is fine as long as you're winning.

Winning is fantastic and I am sure Burnley fans are loving life right now, however I live up North and I try to get down to the Vic as much as possible which costs me a fortune on trains and tickets. I don't think I could justify to myself spending the money to watch crappy defensive football like Burnley play. However at the moment we aren't playing attractive football or getting results.
