Our recruitment for the first team has been a mess, defence almost completely neglected, Deeney left to decline with almost no competition, and even Sarr, who is amazing, was initially given to a manager who doesn't even use wingers, work that one out! Our scouting system for young prospects, especially overseas, has been incredible, so much talent there, and Estupinan is perhaps the best of the bunch. The problem is integrating them into the first team (we've handled Penaranda and Dahlberg particularly badly), relegation, while it would almost certainly mean the departures of some of these talents, would make it a lot more likely to see some of them actually play on a regular basis for us

That sounds as if you expect it would come as a surprise to him, as opposed to the club being more sensible than we sometimes assume in giving him a low-key contract extension last summer at the first signs that he was doing well.

(I'll take it all back if the story is hogwash - the Pozzos are useless and have taken their eye off the ball!)

If it is true that he is under contract until 2024 that has to be good news!

Furthermore maybe we should hold on to him for now and bring him back in house to help with our promotion quest next season. He would also probably be worth a lot more if he stayed on should we gain promotion, then who knows depending on how we do as team he might even want to stay longer than that.

Or at the very least we should get REALLY big money for him if he wants to move on at that stage.

Excellent, so the Juan Carlos Parades role in our Championship squad is filled then.

"Watford has no plans to carry out an operation with Pervis Estupiñán. "

Have we moved on from locking people in the boot to threatening amputation to keep players in the squad?!

Not sure this is in line with our family values.

Well that's good, don't expect him to play for us (maybe wouldn't have come back even if we were in the Premier League), but at least now it seems like we can get a decent enough fee for him

Having recently joined a company that specialises in player recruitment, you'd be amazed at the amount of clubs and agents that take transfermarkt as gospel. Even the Barca president mentioned Arthur's transfermarkt price when discussing his move to Juve.

Using our players as a 'machine to make money with', absolutely (everyone does to an extent, although we do it with players who are very unlikely to actually play for us as well lol), but in fairness, why the hell should they expect an easy ride in negotiations for someone who's been one of the best left-backs in Spain this season?

  19. Eh? Club owns player and terminates a loan to get him back within the terms of the loan. What’s the problem?

Agree. Every club tries to make money from their players; you’d be concerned for the financial viability of your club if they weren’t doing so. I probably should have made clearer when I posted the link but certainly didn’t think it was a negative thing that we were being described like this - quite the opposite. I thought it was encouraging that the Pozzos are not rushing to sell off the Crown Jewels, so to speak, to the first bidder now that we’ve been relegated and have less guaranteed dosh in the coffers.

There comes a tipping point though, and it's a judgement call. How many high value players can the club sell before it eats into our promotion push?

We need to keep as many quality attacking players as possible. I could see us keeping Deulofeu, however, it's all about his injury. Are we likely to get an optimum price for a player who can just come back from an ACL injury.......no is the answer to that. He may stay with us until he's proved his fitness, then off in the January window. This is how I suspect this will play out.

There are a queue of clubs wanting Sarr, so it does seem unlikely he'll be with us. But again, it all depends on the price. Clubs know we spent nearly £30m in order to sign him. There will be a sell-on clause almost certainly with him. So for Watford to start making any money the starting point would have to be around £40m. Personally, I think we won't sell under £50m, but it depends on who else we get out of the door and at what price.

We can afford to let Pereyra and Doucoure go, IMO. Pereyra to Udinese, and they may even inflate the price a little in order to help us. Maybe £19m or a figure around that, could easily be justified. He's an Argentinian international after all. We did turn down an offer of £40m last season for Doucoure supposedly, however, I don't think anyone would bid that this time around. Again I could see if a couple of clubs were in for him we could achieve £30m.

I've done some rough calculations. We'll be getting £44m for parachute payments this season. We will get our placement money as well, but seeing as we ended 19th, it's not going to be too much. So say in total we end up with around £50m. Staying in the Prem usually earns you £115m. So we need to generate about £65m in order to balance the books as a Premier League club.

Selling Doucs and Bobby for around £49m will be a big help. Getting Gray off the books, even for a nominal fee, will be something we need to do also. If we sell Sarr as well for around £50m, we're ahead of the game in terms of finances.

Clearly I'd like to keep either Sarr or Geri as they could be amazing in the Championship next season. We need to keep as much quality as possible, but also balance the books. If we are serious about challenging next season, there is no alternative.

Add Estupinan, Suarez and Cucho. Sign Ngakia. Bring in Pedro, Quina and Wilmot. It could be an exciting young team. But we do need to keep some old heads. Capoue, Deeney, Foster, Welbeck and Cleverley would be my choices.

After that, all we'd need on our incoming shopping list is a backup keeper and obviously, that elusive quality central defender.

The parachute payment is paid in the coming three seasons. So the first payment falls in our first Championship season.

For the season just finished - which includes what you term the placement money for ended up 19th - we should still get £100m+.

  23. hornetboy1

    hornetboy1 First Team Captain

Yes, we'll get probably just over £100m for this relegation season, but I'm talking about next season and beyond.

I read it was a graded 55% in year 1, 40% in year 2 and 20% in year 3. But that's taken from the £80m basic, and is without the placements and TV coverage on top.

Our wage bill is about £43m and if as reported most of the players have 50% relegation clauses then thats £20m saved immediately.

  26. hornetboy1

    hornetboy1 First Team Captain

Yes, exactly. There will be savings there too of course. I doubt every player has this in their contract though so it probably won't be as much as a £20m saving, but it will be significant nonetheless.

The difference between having to sell a good player or not.

this article is insane , we are being difficult because we won’t sell on the cheap, now we have been relegated rather than selling even cheaper we are sticking to asking for a fair price , Hopefully good indication that anybody trying to low ball us can go do one

Yeah it’s bizarre. Like Osasuna are a charity and we should just let them have a high value player on the cheap. Shame on us for attempting to realise the true value of an asset! It kind of highlights their own questionable morals rather than ours, thinking they can take advantage of us because we’ve been relegated.

  31. Ybotcoombes

and surely that is the point of loaning a young player, we get the benefit of the player getting game time and hopefully progressing and they get a young talent with less risk than buying

Which we borrowed against and presumably spent so will just pay off the associated loan. Next year the money we can borrow against the tv money will be much lower so cost will need to be much lower too.

Really is a bizarre article. "Osasuna throw tantrum because Watford won't sell for penuts" would be a more appropriate headline.

Amusingly, despite being relegated I'm fairly sure our income this year will still be a far whack higher than Osasuna's.

The Sportstrac site that referenced £43m did not include the wages of Dawson, Pedro, Pussetto (ok not all the season), Sarr and Wellbeck. That might add c £7m so round it up to £50m.

The last audited accounts for the club stated wages were £74m plus NI £10m taking the total to £84m (as per Swiss ramble analysis). However the reference to Sportstrac looks to be well founded as the club accounts also detail that on top of the first team and loan players -30 in total we also had

-Another 35 players on the books
    -70 coaching staff
-another 24 part time coaching staff
-50 full time and 40 part time commercial staff

Presumably Giraldi & Co wages are in there but if the playing staff are c £50m in wages (exclude NI) then there is another £24m in wages amongst those other 155 players, coaches and commerical staff. Its difficult to imagine those full time staff and players being on £155k pa each on average (£3kpw)-the same as Bachmann so i wonder what additional savings could be made if we can enforce relegation clauses in the 30 first teamers to save £20m. I also wonder what Giraldi is on
