At the very least you expect players to give 100%, and when Pearson describes players as “Passengers” it really does irritate me, but does sum up this season. We have players earning big money who just can’t be bothered. For that reason I doubt I will be rushing back to the Vic, when fans allowed back. I would rather support a team, with less ability that plays with a bit of guts, even if at times they can’t string two passes together

This unfortunately is what football has become. It's the reason GT and Souness retired when they did, they saw the way things were heading.
The players and agents have all the power. The coach, manager ( insert the title of your choice),is expendable.
The players, unless they are very driven or incredibly able or both, can coast.
The only salvation with our current set up is to make the wage structure performance related but this is as likely as Ford and Arthur playing on Tuesday.
    Then again...

The end of last season was sad because that was probably our one and only chance to make Europe apart from somehow winning a cup (why they needed to get rid of European qualification for cup finalists I don't know, feel super jealous of Hull who I think were the last ones to get Europe through that way). Even this season, with Arsenal and Tottenham of the big 6 having poor seasons, it's still gonna largely be the usual suspects in Europe (think we can put Wolves among them now who of course have had backing). We could theoretically go back to something like the early Pozzo years (I don't think we will as they'll lose interest if we get relegated), but even so, it won't have that surprise factor it did the previous time, if we go down, we'll be 'expected' to challenge for promotion next season so anything less than that will be a disappointment. Oh well, these last 8 years have been great fun, but it'll probably get a lot worse for us before it gets better now

I think the very worst thing that could happen is we stay up with this squad. Relegation and a huge clear out of dead wood, (christ we've got a lot of it), may be what we need.
Imagine staying up and how it'll pan out next season?

It depends how long is left on their contracts. Who would better £70000 a week for Gray?
    Etc.
Our parachute payments will probably only cover the excessive wages of our deadwood, who would never leave. We would have to start again, carrying this heavy load. We are not a 'big' club. I could foresee a future where we never ever return to the premiership.

Funny that we seem to trust our amazing owners on everything apart from being able to handle relegation.

It's strange. After the Cup Final I needed a break from Watford, the expectation was for a loss but 6-0 destroyed me. Going in to this season the ligh of passion for the club was dim. The earlyish season 8-0 didn't help either. I am once again at the end of my emotional tether.

We are simply not good enough for this league. I'm not going to berate the team, management or owners. I will focus on the positives. Foster is still a good keeper. Wings sorted with Sarr and Geri D. If we can keep him fit then I see Welbeck as someone who has the ability to lead the team and the line. After most of the season thinking Dawson was not good enough, since startup I have been very impressed.

IF we stay up we need some serious changes to the first team. Focus on mid table but with futureproofing, bring in some youngsters that will improve. Sure up the defence. I think with the right manager our Midfield would be OK. Not sure who the right man for the job would be. Pearson and Shakespear have an awful lot of experience and I would not be disappointed if they were given a run next season.

For me I am gutted the off season will be so short, I need to fall in love with Watford again, Ii've followed the Horns for nearly 40 years and have seen far worse than the current, but very few times have I seen a season where expectations were so distant from actuals. Remember last season, highest Prem finish and a Cup Final ...........

Our owners have got things wrong. I don’t think anybody can argue with that. On the flip side they have got a lot right. It’s looking bleak this season but we’ve been at a level for the last 5 years way beyond our realistic expectations and I think we all knew at some point we would go down. The cup final was horrible but only one other owner has seen us get there before. 5 years in the Premier League only bettered by one other owner and only by a year. A ground we can actually be proud of that no other owner managed.
Some of the decisions around signings and new contracts are very baffling and I would love to know what the plan has been.
But if they were to leave if relegated what type of owner do we want. A billionaire, one who looks more at youth because they can’t afford to buy any players.
Whats our expectations? The club is being slated from top to bottom but what do fans expect? Should we have achieved more?
I’ll probably be abused by certain people for this but I want Gino to stay but I would like better communication, talk to the fans and not just when it’s going well. Be more open and explain why Giraldi seems so involved in the playing side and what does he actually do. Explain what’s gone wrong this year. Talk to us for Christ sake.
Be careful what you wish for

For me the reason I am feeling detached from the club and what is going on at the moment is the lack of being at the games. I find the being at the games a far better experience and have the ability to get far more involved whatever the score / result is from the highs to the lows.

Watching Watford on television for me is depressing, last night I managed about 2 mins after turning on late, seeing we were losing and then watching them score a 2nd. That was enough for me!! Just cannot get emotional about what is happening on the pitch when watching at home rather than being in the stands.

Like someone else said I was brought up to never leave a game early whatever the score, and that included the 0-8 early this season, yet watching during this enforced absence I have now turned 3 off early and not even sure I will watch the last 2 at the moment!

It's all so annoying. I can accept our owners not being as rich as others, in fact it's a bit of a badge of honour. But I can't accept this narrative of them being the shrewdest owners in the league and then wasting the money they do have.

Wasting it paying off whole bunches of coaching staff. Wasting it thinking that three players worth £4m are better than one worth £12m. Wasting the young talent they have got, out on loan whilst we meekly drop out of the Premier League with Andre Gray as our only option from the bench. Wasting £6m on Obbi Oulare, a player that the Bruges fans said didn't even look like a footballer when we signed him. Wasting £18m on Andre Gray. Wasting young players' potential by signing them and then never giving them a chance, only to watch them have a stellar season elsewhere (Lukebakio, Berghuis). Wasting a cup final by putting Gomes in, who should've saved the first two goals.

We could have stayed up easily. The fact that fans can spot what's wrong but the people running the club can't is pathetic. And now, their wasting of money is going to cost them their biggest revenue stream. Think we can finally put to bed the idea that Gino is some kind of otherworldly football genius.

Finally, a more reasoned view. You sum up exactly how I feel. It definitely hurts at the moment and feels frustrating to be a Watford fan but it is possible to be somewhere in between a “happy clapper” and a merchant of doom. I think the truth is that most fans‘ views sit where yours are, KGT - it’s just that their voices are not often the loudest ones on a football forum.

Good post. My preferences would be:

    A) Billionaire
    B) Youth focused owner with clear 5 year plan
    C) Pozzo with better communications
    D) about 75% of other owners

Pozzo is definitely better than average. As you say I think better communication would be a massive step forward.

I think the Pozzo’s have a much better chance of freshening the squad up, than many owners, ready for a championship season. The issue they have is a short turnaround, and clearing out the dead wood, which looks like most of the first team squad. The issue with the Pozzo’s in the Premier, is we are increasingly competing with billionaire owners, who can spend more. Personally I think they have done well to keep us in the Premier for 5 years. There model is better suited to finding good championship players. For every Richarlison/Sarr there are 4 duds. Finding Premier players that slip under the radar, and are good enough, is very, very difficult. They have found talent like Penerada, who looked mustard but simply haven’t made it. There are players like Oulare, who were clearly a mistake -no idea why we brought him. But they have also pulled of some very good business - Delefeou was a bargain. Selling Lukebakio (not good enough for the Premier) for a big profit, and putting the money towards Sarr was genius. The advantage of going down is that some of they young talent will be given a chance to grow (hopefully).

Was going to say the same. It's the same on Twitter with people either talking about the halcyon days in an attempt to rise above the situation or people letting their emotions rule their head.

The situation is bitterly disappointing on all levels but we could still stay up.

That's why the Pozzos' general model of having a revolving door of players (as well as managers) had been effective though - there was no room or time for passengers. Unfortunately this season they let complacency set in on that front for once and the PL is unforgiving.
