Was just reading an interesting article on the BBC website about this person who says they are non binary, neither male or female. This person is saying for them it's because some days they feel masculine & some days feminine.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z76m8xs

What is your view on this topic & where this issue might be heading in the future?

My personal view it could be a wider issue with them generally being uncomfortable with their overall identity, like any teenage angst & using blurred gender descriptions as a way to define this particular state of mind.

For instance you never said in the 70's/80's that boys playing with an Action man dolls/figurines were likely to have issues with male identity, in the same way that girls who were tom boys when they were little might have issues with feminine identity later on in life.

I'm sure that by saying what I've said someone will say it's not PC to call it a mental health issue, but should we rule that out until there is further study or evidence on the subject, after all is it quite a new phenomena in our society?

I expect that 90% of people who put themselves in this category now will look back in embarrassment in 5 years time.

Just go with the sex you were born with. No one cares how you dress or who you want to sleep with, but you can't escape biological fact.

I think it is a difficult area because pleasing some people is likely to mean you displease others.
If I had a friend who was gender fluid I would find out how they would like me to refer to them and comply.
For the most part what gender we are does not affect our everyday lives as we see people and do not need to think of them as one gender or another or indeed neither. Especially as bias against females in our society lessens gender is less relevant.
However there are a few areas where gender comes into play and in those we need to consider not only one group - those who are gender neutral but everybody else as well.

Re the non binary issue, I don't really have any strong feelings apart from the fact that it is nigh-on impossible to remember to say "them" rather than "he" or "she". A pupil at my daughters' school has apparently turned up this year wearing a badge saying they are non binary. I think there's still a bit of groundwork to go re getting fellow teens to "get it". My 15 year old's insightful comments were "I just thought she was a lesbian" and "I thought I was supposed to refer to her as "it" now but then someone told me that apparently that's rude".
Plus, what loos do they use?! I don't want a load of "male" football fans claiming to identify as a woman on a Saturday at Vicarage Road - a football match is the only time the queue for the ladies is shorter than the gents.

But that's not easy, most teens don't get anything. They're coming to terms with puberty as it is and no doubt a number of them view this as a confusing time of their lives.

I assume your daughter's school separate by gender for PE/Games, so this person is fully entitled to have PE but they can't run a private class for one pupil, so this person will have to go in to that group IMO.

Yes, I'm not sure what the deal is for PE. The pupil is/was a female and goes round with girls so I imagine they will stay in girls' PE. It must be quite tricky for the teachers I imagine. That issue is probably even more problematic at the school my friend's daughters are at. Unlike my daughters' mixed school, their school is all girls. A few years ago, however, one of the pupils announced that she identified as a boy. Since then, he - as he is now - has changed his name and is recognised by the school, and his fellow pupils, as a boy. However, the pupil - now in year 11 - has stayed at the school. So the school is an all girls school that doesn't accept boys - apart from this one. Not sure how it works with practicalities of PE, changing, etc etc

This is one of those things I think we're muddying for no good reason.

As far as I'm concerned, the only thing that your sex matters for is whether you're physically built to make or carry babies.

Everything else is a constructed by us. Gender roles are made and decided by us. Personally, I'm not on board with them; everyone should be free to be what they want, dress like they want, act like they want without being expected to behave in certain way because of the shape of their naughty bits. Society is a long way from allowing that, however, which creates the confused state we're now in.

The moment we stop trying to pigeonhole people into neat little boxes the whole conversation goes away.

TBF, in the almost 5 years since that 'article' appeared she's learnt to take a photograph. Her original portfolio was laughably inept - both conceptionally and technically.

A tiny percentage of people are born with a mix of both male and female sexual characteristics. Sometimes, due to genetic defect or whatever, the organ growing between the legs before ten weeks of pregnancy usually develops into either a penis or clitoris, instead develops into neither or both to a greater or lesser extent.

Like it or not the person is genetically female so is technically a girl. How they identify is a matter perhaps of choice but scientifically they are how they were born unless and until an actual sex change.

Mrs Peel is a teacher and it's a minefield. There's a kid in one of her classes who claims to be trans. They've had to make all sorts of exceptions and could be accused of all sorts of they say he instead of she or vice versa.

I don't think they can expect to choose their toilets and changing rooms based on a feeling.

I'm keeping out of this. I was accused of all sorts of ism's merely for pointing out that this gender stuff is going to cause some problems when it comes to changing rooms, schools, prisons, etc.

It was round about the time I was criticised for mentioning an MP who suggested that parents should ask toddler's permission before a tickling game, as an opportunity to prepare our kids for establishing sexual boundaries.

It's a minefield, even discussing the subject.

I have no problem with people not identifying as a certain sex/gender. As long as they can live a happy, comfortable life that’s the main thing.

I'm a big fan of Bill Maher's talk show (don't get me wrong on some things he, and his guests, say are supremely full of ****) but the other week they had Sandra Soh as a guest who's a psychologist and has done a lot of 'proper' research (stats., comparative studies, data mining etc.) on lots of areas of sex and sexuality - most notably on childhood transitions (there's probably a less clumsy term). When interviewed she mentioned, something along the lines of, virtually all (male) kids who were not given access to gender re-assignment hormones/treatments/procedures as children grew up to be gay men.

I've tried to find the full interview but I can only find this snippet (and I'm not 100% sure it's the right clip as I don't have sound):
