We made the same fanfare regarding Penaranda. And are doing it with Cucho. Not sure that kind of fanfare is designed for anything other than clicks and brand-building.

We were in our predicament when we brought him over. If he wasn’t suited to it, maybe he should have stayed in Brazil getting regular game time until this summer?

The fan-fair probably happened because a bunch of people called the publicity department or whatever are payed to do just that sort of thing.

I have gone full circle on this about 3 times .... I wont waffle on - but for what its worth I think regardless of the division we are in we should appoint Pearson permanently. Hes done enough under very difficult circumstances to be given a proper chance.

From the WO comments section he is getting plenty of support. I did think that maybe not having as much say on recruitment and retention as he enjoyed elsewhere might be a frustration, and lead to a parting. Next season, what ever league we will be in, with it’s compromises and odd pre season would be difficult for a new coaching team to navigate. So retaining the current set up is pragmatic.

    I think it’s a balance though.

Hire Pearson and I think the status quo of a one-year rolling contract for managers rolls on. I think Giraldi stays on. I think the recruitment therefore remains muddled.

For me, I think we need bigger changes. Hiring Pearson, even if it’s deserved, might be a sign that we will just continue as we are and find ourselves in a very similar spot in 12 months time.

I wouldn’t complain if we hired him. I see positives to it. But I just don’t think it gives a clear picture about where we want to be. And as a fan, that’s why I want most.

The coach is ultimately irrelvant with Giraldi around. He has to go in the Summer break irrespective of what league we are in. The same old thing will happen with Pearson or whoever. Decent enough start, players are old or get bored, we struggle.

He's been in the job 8 years. At the very least it's time to freshen things up a bit.

That’s my point. I think Pearson staying would be a sign that they are happy with what’s in place.

Yeah, and this is where the issue is. While Pearson has done a decent job dragging us into a position where safety is in our own hands, sticking with him is basically a thumbs up for the status quo, and I have absolutely no doubt we’ll be in massive trouble next season because the squad we have just isn’t good enough. It’s harsh on Pearson, because he’s probably done enough to be given a chance to build, I just have zero faith in Giraldi to provide what’s needed.

If Giraldi isn’t being dumped, I suppose Pearson is about as likely as anybody to drag this sorry, aging squad of misfits to survival next season.

I’d love to see us commit to a clear philosophy, and sign younger players who fit our plan going forward, with a new technical staff in place to develop and implement.

Points earned by the relegation-threatened teams since Pearson was appointed:

    Watford: 25
    West Ham: 15
    Aston Villa: 14
    Bournemouth: 12

Pearson is averaging 1.24 points per game for us at the moment, so multiplying that over a full season would mean 47 points. Given the situation when he came in I think that's a pretty good overall performance, and you'd think he could do better next season with a pre-season period to properly drill the team with.

It's difficult to think of a worse (realistic) situation you could bring a new head coach into than the situation we were in when he was appointed.

That's better than I would have thought, probably because our successes in that period have come in bursts.

I honestly think Pearson has been dealt one of the worst hands in Premier League history.

Taking over a team that was poorly conditioned in pre-season, already had two different head coaches that season, rooted to the bottom of the league and completely adrift at Christmas. He gets to the team to find some form and finally gets us out of the relegation zone, overturning a pretty sizable points deficit, and then along comes the pandemic to turn everything upside-down!
