A manager who likes to play attractive football AND put faith in younger players? No chance without bigger fundamental changes at the club.

They do well out of youth development but interestingly Brentford binned their academy completely 4 years ago.

Perhaps by the look of the players they have at the club ATM it has already done it's job for the foreseeable future.

Unique system they have for their B team, they had the same problem we had with Sancho, so they decided to bin the academy and go for a B team outside of any organised leagues, but playing local cups and friendlies against Europe's elite

That's what we were going for when we brought Andy Scott in - former Brentford man of course - but then ditched it last summer after a year or so. The incoherence in strategy from Pozzo doesn't just affect first team recruitment....

I mean, it's definitely working for them, but I'm not quite sure what the logic is taking a team out of a league like that, does that system mean that they can't be raided like they could be with a regular academy?

I've said elsewhere, I like the young players we've picked up from other clubs, whether they be the likes of the South Americans, homegrown players like Quina and Wilmot, or even some of the guys in our U23s, but the biggest problem is giving them that next step to regular first team football, and it's a multi-faceted issue

He would probably have been sacked had we lost to Norwich. That was a 50/50 match. It took the "goal of the season" from us and the "miss of the season" from them to allow us to win it. Such fine margins.

Today was another dud first half performance, but another turn around second half performance.

I think he has to be given an extended contract now. The players are responding to him, even though they are very stop/start. We're crap away, but at home, under Pearson, we've been excellent. 6 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats. The only bad one was Southampton, and even the Everton defeat was a last kick of the game defeat.

But we have to look at where we were. 17 games 9 points. Since Pearson took over, 18 games 25 points. That equates to 50 points in a season, even with this shower. Just imagine what we'd do with a full season and two or three better players in key positions next season.

Although, his job was hanging by a thread. It now looks like we'll stay up, so he has to stay.

That’s the key, he took over with one arm behind his back and two legs tied together. He’s not perfect and neither is our squad, but his record is comfortably mid table. A team like us will always have periods of good form and periods of bad form when we look hopeless. It’s just been magnified with us hanging above the trapdoor.

Not only that but bottom at Christmas. Only three PL teams have recovered from that position to stay up since 1992. We’re on the verge of being the fourth - and Nigel Pearson’s second. It’s an excellent achievement if we see it through.

As great as an achievement it is. Gino has already got a cardboard box ready for Nigel to pack his office up.

Barcelona will sack Setien and Gino will pounce

It’s 50/50 for me. I want stability more than anything with every boss besides smoking Walter and QSF 2nd time round I wanted them to stay even though it’s proved the right decision time and time again. What he’s achieved or on the cusp of achieving is remarkable but the form and tactics going into these last 2 games was *****. He deserves a pop with some of his own players or fresh faces at least. But then on the other hand would it be a case of starting next season the same as this and then we become less attractive

  18. I want stability but I also want a coaching team who try to play expansive football, and develop youth. I don't think Pearson is that person.

    I'm completely torn.

If we stay up then I think he should be given a chance to have a transfer window, we owe him that. I think when he came in we were almost unanimous in saying if he keeps us up he would have worked marvels. We are effectively one win away from that mission being achieved. It would be an incredible achievement for him.

On the other side, some of the football we have played has been dire. However is he limited by the players we have? I have to admit i would like to see him with some of the available players we have coming back next season?

We play too many long balls, but don’t really have the players to play through teams. It’s more important that we freshen up the team, so I would stick with Nige and give him some young and hungry British players that will improve the quality. We have had 3 managers in a season, and need some stability. I am also not sure who we will get in that is better.

It depends what we want. If we keep him then we’re almost guaranteed to be absolutely fine and mid table next season, his PPG with us is comfortably that.

The problem is I always thought the owners had a plan in terms of managers, style of play they wanted and basically where they wanted us to go, but actually they don’t. They just appoint anybody and hope for the best. This is made worse by the fact they’re almost always unemployed for some reason or another as the really good managers tend to be in jobs.

If they did actually have a plan, a style of play they wanted to implement and a specific manager in mind they want to take us forward then great, but they won’t.

So it’s it better the devil you know? Or roll the dice on somebody we’ve never heard of.

Wasn't pleased when he was given the job. Under the worst circumstances possibly he's on the cusp of keeping us up.. Given everything else that's happening with the pandemic and start stop season he should be nothing more than applauded for what he's done and currently doing. No not the most attractive football going but he's almost achieved what I thought I was an impossible task even getting us to this position. Forget the performance for now it's all about points. If he and the current team are in charge next season I for one will be right behind them but I honestly don't think he will be.

This, however, would be just as happy with young hungry foreign players. The squad clearly needs a massive shake up regardless of who's in charge. Pearson deserves a chance, whatever division we are in.

I would say it is very likely Gino already has a replacement lined up as ever. The short pre-season may be a factor in this. It's only a few weeks isn't it? Would make managerial change even riskier than normal!

It feels like Marco Silver was the coach the owners thought could take us to a new level, playing attacking football . Unfortunately he turned out to be a fraud ( and a snake) . I think Javi was intended to be a bit if a stop gap , to keep us up , but he outperformed initially and stayed longer than expected Ever since that they’ve been fighting fires to keep us in the premier league .

If we stay up next season is likely to be all about keeping us up again and rebuilding , but I Expect they will be looking at other coaches who could Possibly take us to the next level playing bc attacking football .

I've checked out Pearson's record since he took over. Not worried by the FA Cup, nor will the owners.

His league record has been good, considering where we were when he took over. P18 W 7 D 4 L7 F24 A24 Pts 25 Gd 0

I still can't believe it's that good, as it includes 11 games where we won just once and picked up only 6 points.

Defensively, we've certainly improved. To have only conceded 24 goals in 18 games, for a team right at the bottom of the table, is commendable. Clearly we've got work to do at the other end, as 24 goals is not amazing, but it's still a big improvement on what went before.

Beating Newcastle, with all their attacking threats was a very good result. They didn't really create too much, apart from the early stages of the game. Sure Foster had to make a couple of very good saves, but once we got on top, we really deserved the win. West Ham are like Newcastle in many ways. They have a star winger in Antonio, and some other quality attacking players, but the are also flaky at the back, just like Newcastle.

It will be a tough match on Friday, but we have the ability and quality to avoid defeat, and that's probably all we'll need in order to stay up. If that's achieved, then overall, Pearson would have done a fantastic job.

Pffft, I don't know what to do with Pearson, we've obviously been far better with him in the dugout than Gracia and QSF, and he deserves credit for that, although he could hardly be worse, and benefited greatly from Sarr coming into the team and other teams being dreadful. Can be criticised for his game management at times, as well as sticking with the same old tactics that have been ineffective for a while now, although to an extent, he's not had much alternative (every other manager has also resorted to lumping it up to Deeney too). I suspect that if we keep him, we'll be fine (especially if we have a good transfer window and he isn't horrendously unlucky with injuries), but that there definitely are better alternatives out there. Only thing is that there's a lot to be said for stability, and that changing managers can be a risk (I really thought Silva was gonna take us to the next level lol)

I get the feeling that Pearson will be the victim of his own success, (he was brought in with the Championship in mind no doubt), and that if we stay up now, we'll go for someone more ambitious. Extremely important that if that is the route we go for, that we get the right man in and not some random poser

I think the problem we’re always going to have is that whenever one of our managers hits a bad patch they get the sack, and we’re nowhere good enough to never not hit a bad patch at some point. Pearson’s form before Norwich was classic pozzo sacking form, and if it was so close to the end of the season and he wasn’t our third manager already he may we’ll have got the sack, only for him to then turn it around on the next two games.

Much has been said about our squad being terrible and us struggling next year, but with the right manager I don’t see it. Pearson’s PPG is 50 points, comfortable survival. Because of our bad start the situation has been exaggerated, we were going into to games against Burnley and Southampton with them being absolute ‘must win games’ and when we fail we look terrible, but as a mid table team those are precisely the type of games you lose regularly. If Pearson has been in charge from the start and we were on 10 more points, nobody bats an eyelid at those losses.

The squad definitely needs an overhaul, however this season has proven the single most important decision is who we appoint as manager for next season, that’s what we’ll live and die on.

It would be nice if the owners decided they wanted to change their methods and look at a longer term manager who will have a bit more involvement and control, but I’m almost certain they won’t.

They’ll continue to look at the manager role like a Ryan air pilot, just another position to be filled by someone unemployed and a vaguely suitable CV.

God I hope not. More turgidity than a C3 plant drowning in water. As Burnsy and others have pointed out we need to develop a longer term model and identity rather than being a mish mash of conflicting aims.

I would be happy if we kept Pearson on, remember Charlton, they got fed up with mid table obscurity in the P.L. sacked their most successful manager in modern times, and ended up two divisions lower!

I agree with this, however with the pandemic there will only be 7 weeks between the Arsenal game and our first match next season, plus with the threat of a second spike lurking in the background I think the Pozzos would be wise to ride that out with Pearson in place rather than chance it with another unknown.

I think it's clear that our problems lie in the quality and mental strength of the squad and not the manager. Basically the same thing has happened to every manager since we got promoted, with the exception of Silva.

Pearson in my eyes is fine and has done an excellent job this season. Give him more options and let's see if he starts to adapt his tactics and trust the back-up players. Would be laughable to change manager yet again, hoping it will paper over the cracks in the actual squad of players available

  33. a19tgg

The owners have said themselves the likely lifespan of a Watford manager is two years, they either run in to trouble and get the sack or do well and move on. Unfortunately the only manager we’ve had that has been close to the first scenario is silva, and even he was actually sacked anyway.

Sadly I don’t expect anything is going to change, so in reality we may as well keep Pearson. For me that’s slightly depressing in terms of ambition but if we get rid of him they really aren’t going to change their way of doing things. It will be someone we’ve never heard of who has a few it’s and buts on their CV. They’ll do well to start with and then run into the usual problems. At least Pearson has shown that he can come out of the other side of a bad run, I can’t think of any of our previous managers who have had the chance to do that.

  34. a19tgg

Silva went on a run of 11 games without a win and was sacked. It was speculated it was because his head was turned, but his time at Everton confirmed that he just wasn’t very good. I don’t see how Silva didn’t turn out the same as all of our managers.

Maybe similar then. I just meant that with him it completely coincide with him agitating to leave after so few games, ie he bought the drop in form on himself. With all the other managers it was a slow reversion to the mean.
